2007 was a year of new beginnings for the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary. It marked the beginning of the organization’s second decade of leading collaborative efforts to protect and enhance the Delaware Estuary for current and future generations. After more than a year of planning, the Partnership completed its first formal Strategic Plan in 2007, charting the course for the better part of this new decade. This year also marked the end of an era of extraordinary leadership by Kathy Klein, our former executive director, and the beginning of a thrilling new era for both me and the organization as I take the helm as the new executive director.

But I think the true hallmark of the Partnership’s success in 2007 has been the sheer number of people whose lives we touched this year with messages about protecting and enhancing the Estuary. Across all of our programs, from January to December, we engaged partners old and new to spread awareness, appreciation, and scientific understanding of the Delaware Estuary, its vast resources, and how we can each play a role in their protection. Because of these efforts by the Partnership, tens of thousands of people are newly armed with information and inspiration for joining us in the protection and celebration of the incredible natural, cultural, and economic resources that make up the Delaware Estuary.

Here in our 2007 Activity Report you will find a brief sampling of those activities and a summary of the many partners — public, corporate, and individual — who we have to thank for making them possible. This activity report is dedicated to those partners and especially to Kathy Klein, whom we now count among them, for nurturing this organization into what it is today.

WINTERThe second Delaware Estuary Science Conference and first ever Environmental Summit brought over 275 scientists and conservationists to Cape May, New Jersey in late January for a diverse array of general and special sessions on Estuary issues and hot topics, highlighted by a keynote address from esteemed estuarine scientist, Dr. Scott Nixon.

A display at the Philadelphia Flower Show, entitled “Soften the Urban Landscape to Improve Water Resources” (photo A) was coordinated by the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary and the Philadelphia Water Department to feature solutions for stormwater runoff pollution like rain barrels, rain gardens, porous-pavement, and infiltration trenches.

The Partnership also worked with the Philadelphia Water Department to developa new Campus Stormwater Guide(photo B) as a way to engage teachers and schools in the Schuylkill Watershed (and beyond) in stormwater management at school sites.

SPRINGThe Clean Water Begins and Ends with You Drawing Contests in Philadelphia and Delaware attracted over 2,400 entrees and featured the works of winning artists (photo C) on SEPTA and DART rail cars and buses, bringing their clean water messages to millions of travelers.

At Wilmington Earth Day, the Partnership and the City of Wilmington treated hundreds of residents, school children, and workers on their lunch break to free environmental consumer education and giveaways in a festival-like atmosphere to promote earth-friendly products, services, everyday actions and purchasing decisions (photo D).

In April, the Partnership worked with the Philadelphia Water Department to give a Source Water Protection Workshop that provided businesses and community members in the Poquessing Watershed with opportunities to join in the efforts to protect source water quality.

Also in April, over 20 tons of debris was removed from the banks of the Christina Riverfront by nearly 800 volunteers at a Partnership-coordinated clean-up site on the Christina Riverfront in Wilmington, Delaware as part of the Christina River Watershed Cleanup (photo E).

The Mispillion Nature Center opened in May, showcasing an interactive exhibit about the Delaware Estuary that provides an overview of the environmental and economic importance of the Delaware Estuary to the region. The display gives visitors the opportunity to “fly the Estuary” using an interactive touch screen and joy stick to experience the Estuary from a bird’s eye view (photo F).

Workshops and presentations were provided by the Partnership to promote the use of the National Vegetation Classification System (NVCS) in the Delaware Estuary as a tool for better, more sustainable restoration.

SUMMERThe Partnership hosted the 11th Annual Delaware Estuary Watershed Workshop for Teachers in conjunction with the Bucks County Conservation District and the Pennsylvania DCNR. Eighteen new teachers (photo G) were welcomed into the ranks of this program’s alumni after they completed a week’s worth of hands-on activities in the Estuary’s creeks, wetlands, and bay.

The Delaware Bay Oyster Restoration Project continued in 2007 with expanded shell planting (photo H) by the States of Delaware and New Jersey and increased efforts by the Partnership to raise awareness about the Delaware Bay oyster by “marketing” the oyster within the restaurant community and at public events such as Delaware and Southeastern Pennsylvania Coast Days.

The Partnership engaged the services of Talisman Interactive to develop an Ecotourism Website targeted at visitors to the State of Delaware and featuring information about local nature-based events, destinations, and offerings posted by the Partnership and cooperating organizations.

Estuary News went green this summer, transitioning from a quarterly print publication to a newsletter distributed twice annually by e-mail and at least once annually in print, conserving almost 10,000 pounds of recycled paper per year and curbing the carbon emissions associated with delivery.

The Partnership worked in coordination with the Rutgers University Haskin Shellfish Research Laboratory to lay the groundwork for the Delaware Estuary Living Shorelines Initiative, which will demonstrate a new approach to stabilizing eroding shorelines of tidal marshes using natural intertidal shellfish reefs.

The Delaware Estuary Information Gateway was established by the Partnership as a web-based one-stop- shop or first point of contact for environmental information in the Estuary for the public, educators, scientists, and environmental managers.

FALLSoutheastern Pennsylvania Coast Day, (photo I) held by the Partnership in mid- September, drew thousands of people to Penn’s Landing to participate in over a dozen activities provided by our partner organizations, as well as oyster-tasting, boat rides aboard the A.J. Meerwald, and guided bus tours to the Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center.

Later in September, the Partnership worked with the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia to host a Regional Restoration Workshop that attracted national experts and regional stakeholders to discuss the latest science and management approaches to regional restoration and why a strategy for the Delaware Estuary could be warranted.

On September 27th, the Partnership celebrated “The Delaware – A Living River, a Working River” with almost 400 of our closest friends and supporters gathered together for the annual Partnership dinner and silent auction fundraiser at Turbine Hall on the Chester Riverfront.

The Partnership worked with its Schuylkill Action Network partners to organize the third Schuylkill Action Network Annual Workshop at the Montgomery County Community College in Pottstown

in October, convening approximately 80 of its members from throughout the Schuylkill Watershed to share information, ideas, challenges and solutions for water quality protection.

The Partnership’s Corporate Environmental Stewardship Program, which works to involve corporations in local environmental stewardship projects, celebrated the addition of four new companies to its membership in 2007.

An initial round of fieldwork for the Brandywine River Freshwater Mussel Restoration Project (photo J) was completed this fall, laying the groundwork for re-introducing native species of freshwater mussels back into the lower Brandywine River as a way to help improve water quality and habitat conditions.
