Partners with your Operation

for future Success...

Getting Started Curt Hanson, Founder

Part V: In the last issue of Partners, we ended with the opening of Mid-State East in Watertown and the addition of seven employees there.

Watertown was the last of the Eichstaedt Implement stores, and had been operated only as a parts and service center. We decided that we would operate as a full dealership offering sales of new and used equipment as well as parts and service. To expand to a full dealership, we needed to start building a new service shop and build an equipment display lot for new and used equipment. By the fall of 1990, we had completed the addition of a 6,000 square-foot shop and built an expanded display lot.

During the winter of 1990 and the spring of 1991 our son, Bryan, was serving our country as a Marine in Desert Storm in the Middle-East. This was a stressful time for the Hanson family.

In the summer of 1991, we started remod-eling our parts department and building a new second floor office space in Columbus.

At the same time, the new four-lane High-way 151 was being built between Sun Prairie and Columbus. In the summer of 1992, the new highway was opened, plac-ing the Columbus store a third-mile from the Highway 151 interchange and leaving

Highway 73 as the major road going past the front of the store. This made for a safer entry and exit to the Columbus location.

In August of 1992, John Deere introduced the “New Breed of Deere” tractor lineup. These included the new 6000 and 7000 series trac-tors. The 6000 series replaced the old 2000 and 3000 series tractors. The 7000 series replaced the 4000 series tractors that were introduced back in 1960, replacing the two cylinder tractors. This was the biggest change in tractors in 32 years.

The 70 series four-wheel drive tractors were introduced in 1993. They included the 8570, 8770, 8870, and 8970. These tractors replaced the 60 series tractors with more horsepower.

In 1994 Deere introduced a complete new line of high horsepower row crop tractors. These were the all-new 8000 series with new cabs and new command arm controls. This was a major change to the large row crop tractors, and the end of the large frame 4000 series tractors that began in 1968 with the introduc-tion of the 4520 tractor. The 4560, 4760, and 4960 were the last of the 4000 series row crop tractors. The new 8000 series tractors set new standards for the farm tractor industry.

A major expansion of the Watertown store was started in 1995. (Continued on Page 2...)

This included a complete new facade with a new entry, a larger parts department, a new display floor, and new offices.

At this time, we started a new division of our company called “Mid-State Rentals.” With the Watertown expansion, we started renting skid steer loaders, SkyTraks, fork lifts, and oth-er lifts and equipment. This was the start of the commercial rental business. Before this, we had just rented farm tractors to farmers and canning companies.

In July of 1995 the Wisconsin Farm Technology days were on the Dan Neuburg farm in Washington County. We had a large display of forage equipment and tractors. Temperatures at that show were close to 100 degrees on some days.

Bryan Hanson joined the business in 1996 in Watertown, two years after graduating from University of Wisconsin-Platteville. We were very happy and excited to have him in the family business. He and his wife, Erin, moved to Watertown.

In 1996 John Deere introduced a new line of four-wheel drive tractors. The 9000 series were bold new tractors with new large cabs, many more new features, and more power. The largest was the 9400 tractor.

By 1997 John Deere had been in the combine business for 50 years. In 1997 all 9000 series combines came with a large “50 Year” decal on the side of the combine to commemorate the 50th anniversary.

We added a 4,000 square foot expansion in Columbus onto our machine shop to have more room for combine repair. This gave us more height for the larger machines. This also

allowed us to add more machinery technicians. We started a fleet of service call vehicles to provide better field service to customers.

With the closing of the John Deere dealer in Slinger in 1993, there was a need for John Deere representation in the Hartford-Slinger area. We spent many hours trying to find a suitable location. While visiting a customer on Highway 83 south of Hartford, we saw a small building available for rent. It wasn’t ideal, but it was a place to start. Bryan took on the challenge in 1998, and along with help from Dennis Lichten-berg and Norbie Neu, we opened this small dealership south of Hartford on Highway 83. This was our start in the Hartford-Jackson area.

1998 brought the 10-series combine introduction (9410, 9510, and 9610.) The 10-series 7000 tractors were introduced with many new improvements.

However, the big news for me in late 1997 came from the phone call I got from Georgia. It was our daughter, Christine, who was working for John Deere Credit in Augusta, Georgia. She asked, “Dad, do you think there would be room for me in the business?” What a wonderful surprise. I said, “If that is what you want, perhaps we can find a position for you.”

Now with the addition of Christine in late 1997, we were entering 1998 with all members of the family involved in the business.

In the next issue we enter our 25th year in business (1999,) Y2K, Greenstar, dealer expansion and consolidation, and many more new machines!

Zero Turn Mowers John Laubenstein, Jackson Consumer & Commercial Sales

We have waited through a long and frus-trating winter, but within the last few weeks, the grass has turned green and is growing! It’s time to get that equipment out to cut the lawn. Maybe this is the year for you to think about replacing your old mower with a new Scag or John Deere

zero-turn mower to make the job easier. Here at Mid-State Equipment, we can meet your needs with fast cutting, quality driven, zero-turn mowers that save you up to 30% of the time it takes you to cut with your current mower.

Let’s talk about a product made by Metal Craft in nearby Mayville, Wisconsin. This company builds a complete line of Scag zero-turn mowers. Let’s start with the Freedom Z, a heavy duty homeowner machine with a 48 inch to a 61 inch cutting capacity. Next we go to the Tiger Cat, which is the first cat with the famous Velocity cutting deck. This machine produces a very high quality cut and appearance with a variety of deck sizes. From there we move up to the world’s fastest cat, the Cheetah. Some models have speeds up to 16 mph to get the job done fast. The Cheetah has a simple inde-pendent suspension system that tames the bumps and gives you a smooth ride.

Our next machine would be the Turf Tiger. This machine has been around for almost twenty-five years and has made a solid reputation that speaks for itself. Available in gas or diesel with cutting capacities from 52 to 72 inches, this is the king of all cats. With optional attachments, you can bag, mulch, or side-discharge the clippings. A striper kit is also available that makes your cutting area look like a baseball field.

Another quality product is our John Deere lineup of home-owner zero-turn mowers. We will start with the Z235 with its powerful 20 horsepower engine and 42 inch wide cutting deck. This unit will handle an acre of grass like a breeze. The Z400 and Z600 series are built heavier and will handle even higher acreage. All John Deere homeowner zero turn mowers, have a stamped, steel deck which is a John Deere trademark.

John Deere also offers a complete line of commercial grade mowers. The 900 Series ZTrak mowers feature heavy duty features with a reasonable price. The Z915B is available with a 48 to 60 inch deck. All John Deere commercial grade mowers have a stamped deck made out of seven gauge steel and a high blade tip speed of 18,000 fpm to give you a high quality cut.

You might also take a look at our John Deere M and R Series zero-turn commercial mowers. They offer more comfort and engine options including fuel injected models that can save you up to 40% less in fuel consumption. They also offer diesel powered units.

Stop by to check out the complete zero-turn lineup at Mid-State Equipment. With 40 years of service, we look forward to helping you with your lawn cutting needs.

Bobcat Skidsteers- A step above the rest Rhonda Davis, Prairie du Sac Sales

Did you know that Bobcat built its one mil-lionth loader this year? You can now buy a piece of history by purchasing the S650 one millionth edition machine. The Bobcat skid-steer loader is known worldwide for its’ versatility, maneuverability and reliabil-ity. Bobcat pioneered the skid-steer loader

concept in 1960 and maintains its industry leadership today with a broad product line. Bobcat is offering a limited number of machines to purchase. Along with this milestone, Bobcat has also installed a new Doosan Non-DPF Tier 4 Engine in the skid-steer. This Tier 4 compliant machine does not need DEF fluid like most other machines in its class. As part of the rollout of the new, non-DPF Tier 4 compliant Bobcat engine, Bobcat Company is providing a three-year/3000 hour Engine Warranty. Stop in to Mid-State Equipment today to check out the new machines and engines that Bobcat has to offer.

What sets Bobcat apart from the competition? There are several things that set Bobcat Skid-Steer Loaders apart from the rest. The Bobcat cooling system, (known as smart cool-ing,) is 30% quieter than the original cooling fans. Plus, the hydraulically powered SmartFan senses the temperature of the machine and turns on only as needed. This allows the machine to work in extreme conditions without the worry of overheating. Bobcat loaders have a patented, dual-path cooling system that draws cool, clean air from above and pulls warm air out of the engine compartment. It forces the air out the two side vents for more efficient cooling, and keeps the engine compartment cleaner.

Bobcat’s cooling system is unlike the competition’s that pull the dirty air over the top of the tires and from the rear of the

machine. Some manufacturers still place the radiators in the tailgate of the machines, whereas the Bobcat radiator and hydraulic oil cooler are well protected between the frame uprights above the engine. This also allows for better service-ability with having full access to the engine. The Bobcat also has a tip-up cab for access to the hydraulic and hydrostatic components in minutes.

Bobcat offers three different control options, allowing you to decide what works best. First, Bobcat offers their standard controls. Standard controls, invented nearly 50 years ago, still remain a solid option with dual steering levers to control each drive side independently, and with dual foot pedals to control the loader lift and tilt functions. Advanced Control System, (ACS) controls offers you the choice of two control styles in one machine. By pressing a switch, you can use traditional Bobcat standard controls or H-pattern hand controls. In H-pattern mode, the left lever controls the left drive and lift, while the right lever controls the right drive and tilt. The third option is Selectable Joystick Controls (SJC.) The SJC option is becoming more popular as it offers low-effort hand control of all machine workgroup functions. ISO or H-patterns can easily be activated by a dash-mounted rocker switch inside the cab. Bobcat truly sets themselves apart from the competition by offering something that no one else can.

If you want to learn more about the Bobcat Products and how they stack up against the competition, please call your Mid-State Equipment representative.

Precision Farming Update Phil Moskal, Integrated Solutions Manager

With planting well underway, I thought I’d take a few minutes to give you an update on a couple of newer products.

John Deere Field Connect is a soil moisture monitoring system for those of you with irrigation. Field Connect consists of two

main components. The first component is the soil moisture probe, which comes in three different sizes. The smallest is a half meter probe. This is designed for shallow rooted crops like vegetables, flowers, and mint. It has moisture sensors at 4, 8, 12, and 20 inches. The middle probe goes one meter be-low the surface. This would be the most common probe used for row crops like corn and soybeans. It has all the same sen-sors as the half meter, with an additional sensor at 40 inches. The biggest probe is 1.5 meters. This is designed for orchards and vineyards. It adds an additional sensor at 60 inches. The other part of the Field Connect system is the Gateway. This is the brain box of the system. It has a battery to run everything which is charged by a solar panel. It also houses all of the communication equipment.

There are many additional sensors you can add to the gate-way. A rain bucket will collect the precipitation that falls, from your irrigation system or Mother Nature, and give you a total. This can help you determine if you are putting out the correct amount of water from your irrigator or if that field received any rain from the sporadic storms that pop up over summer.

This is a self-emptying bucket so there is no maintenance. A temperature probe can be used in two ways. You can place it in the ground and it will give you soil temperature at a depth of three inches. You could also put a sun shade on the probe and it will tell you air temperature. A weather station is also compatible with the Field Connect system. It will tell you air temperature, wind speed, wind direction, relative humidity, and Delta-T. Delta T is an indicator for acceptable conditions to apply product. It indicates evaporation rate and droplet lifetime. The Leaf Wetness Sensor imitates leaf characteristics and is used in the plant canopy or on a weather station mast. The sensor detects moisture or frost on the upper surface by measuring the dielectric constant of the surface. Finally, we have a Pyranometer, which measures solar radiation.

All sensors, including the moisture probes, are connected to the gateway via cables. The gateway will collect data from all of the sensors every half hour. It stores those on-board and will “call in” with data every two hours. It uses either a cell phone connection, or if that is not available, it will use satel-lites to transmit the information. This data is sent directly to your MyJohnDeere.com web portal. You can view this data over any device connected to the internet, like a computer, tablet, or even a smart phone.

This information can be very helpful if you have irrigators spread over a large distance. It can also help you time your irrigation to feed you crops at the optimal time.

Product Spotlight: Hay Tools Jeff Neumann, Prairie du Sac Sales

Here it is, May already! And, just like usual for Wisconsin, temperatures have been up and down. Conditions like this will make for an interesting hay season, and with all the challenges that go into making hay, we need to make sure we match up the right equipment for your operation. Having the

correct hay tool can speed up your operation no matter if you are doing dry hay with a smaller windrow or chopping hay with a large windrow.

Cutting hay efficiently requires matching the right equipment with the acres you are trying to cover in order to make a quality product without spending too much money and time. With John Deere Mower Conditioners, we start with the 625, 630, and 635 side-pull machines. The 625 MoCo comes with an 8'2" cut, but only comes with an impeller conditioner. The 630 & 635 MoCos come with an impeller or urethane rolls, and range from a 9'9" cut to 11'6" cut. These machines are a very good fit if you want a smaller windrow of hay for drying out when baling or using a smaller pull-type chopper. These mowers also offer either an equal angle or clevis hitch.

Next, we go to the John Deere 830 & 835 mid-pivot MoCos. These will produce the same size windrows as the 630 and 635 at the 9'9" and 11'6" cut. These also have a swing tongue for multi-directional cutting. Determining what tractor you are using to cut with is a good idea before you choose the style of hitch you want on the MoCo. Another consideration is the cost of the side-pull machine. Side-Pull machines are lower cost, and have the same cutter bar and conditioner types, but not as efficient when turning. We then go to the 946 & 956 MoCos which have been a mainstay for Deere for years. The big difference in this series is you have four choices of conditioners: impeller, urethane rolls, V-10 steel rolls, and tri-lobe. These MoCos provide the most versatility for condi-tioning the crop. Finally we add the new Deere triple mower 131 front unit & 338 rear unit for a total cut of 28'8" equipped with an impeller conditioner.

John Deere also offers several self-propelled windrowers including the W110, W150, and W235 which match up with several platforms. The 140A & 160A auger platforms match up with the W110. The W150 will handle the 140A, 160A and 180A platforms. These headers all have steel rolls and a sickle cut. Next, we have the W235 power unit. This unit has three

...Make Hay While the Sun Shines! New John Deere & Kuhn Hay Tools are in-stock & ready to get in the Fields!h c

Page 9: PARTNERS Edition 6

choices of headers including the 994 in a 13' to 14' 5" cut and a 995 in a 16' cut. On these headers you have four options of conditioning styles from the rotary impeller, urethane rolls, V-10 steel rolls, and Tri-Lobe steel rolls. With so many options to pick from, we can easily fit your drying needs. Consult with your salesperson to see what will work best for you.

Once the hay is down, we should talk about balers and what type of bale you want to make. John Deere still offers three small square balers including the 328, 338, and 348. You can order these balers with a drop chute, regular chute, or bale ejector. If small square is not your style, we can go with a round baler. We start out with the 449 round baler. The 449 is a nice 4X4 round baler, with twine only, for the farmer who wants to keep baling simple and low cost. Next comes the 459 and 559 that can bale with twine or net wrap. These ma-chines, coming in silage special or standard, make a nice mid-range bale. Next in line are the 469 and 569 large models, of-fering twine and net wrap. These balers come in silage special or standard with a premium option also available. Completing the lineup is the 854 silage special baler with standard knives and pre-cutter to tackle wet and heavy crop. From silage to dry hay, this dependable fleet of balers does a great job in

covering your baling needs.

In April, Green Toys 4 U held a John Deere “Cutest Baby” Drawing. The drawing was open to all babies under 24 months old. In the photo, John Deere had to be represent-ed somehow, whether the baby was wearing a John Deere outfit, or playing with a John Deere toy. Photos were posted

on our Facebook page for everyone to see. On April 30th, Emmalee from Tennessee became our lucky winner in the random drawing. Her mother, Robin submitted the photo. She received a John Deere gift basket prepared by GT4U that included some of our best-selling baby products. We would like to thank everyone who participated in the John Deere “Cutest Baby” Drawing!

Sprayer Question 1: When should I close the orifice valve on the back of the boom?Answer: The orifice valve on the back of the boom should get closed when you are spraying anything under 26 gallons per minute. This orifice valve is in the system to put back pressure on the flow meter to read correct flow through the flow meter

at this low of a rate.

Sprayer Question 2: What is oil is in the hydraulic and hydro system of my sprayer?Answer: All John Deere sprayers use 10-30 Turf Guard, Part # ty22075 Oil in the hydraulic and hydro systems. It is very im-portant that we use the correct oil in this system as the 10-30 Turf Guard Oil is thicker than regular John Deere hydraulic oil. This helps keep the pumps lubricated and cool, espe-cially in the hot summer months.

Baler Question: Why is the twine broken at the base of the knot? Answer: Most likely, breaks happen be-cause it is last year’s twine or poor quality twine. The other possible issues could be twine strength is too low or the knot did not strip off the bill hook. Make sure your baler is using current fresh twine to pre-vent breakdowns during the busy season.

Lawn Mower/Compact Question: The tractor doesn’t seem to run as well after a few mowing’s, and the temperature gauge seems a little higher than normal. Why does this happen?Answer: The grass clippings blow around the tractor and this grass gets caught in areas like the radiator and radiator

screens. It is very important that these items get cleaned out to remove the clippings and debris to prevent the equip-ment from overheating and damaging components. Most of the newer compacts and lawn mowers have a removable screen that is in front of the radiator and you can remove this screen to clean out the radiator, and surrounding areas with an air compressor. This will keep your equipment running better, more efficiently and increases the lifetime of the unit. If you have question, please contact your local Mid State service department, and we would be happy to assist.

Zero Turn Question: What should I do if my zero turn is not tracking straight?Answer: Check the fluid level of your hydro and set the tire pressure on all tires. If it is still not tracking straight, take a look in your owners manual to see if it explains how, or bring it in to your local Mid-State Service department to get adjusted.

Proud Wisconsin Family BusinessNine family businesses were honored in the eleventh annual Wisconsin Family Business of the Year Award banquet held in Madison. Three grand awards were presented along with six special awards.

Nineteen companies were nominated for the awards. Win-ners were selected by an independent panel of judges. Special awards were given by the judges to companies excelling in a particular area. Mid-State Equipment was presented with the “Plowing the Way to Success” award. This special award honors Mid-State Equipment and the Hanson family.

“As a second generation owner in the business now, I have such a deep respect and appreciation for all that our parents did in the business to make it the success it is today,” said daughter Chris Frodel. “It is with admiration that we look at our parents and how they have transitioned the ‘reigns,’ and understand how delicate and perhaps hard at times this must be, as the founding generation.”

“We have seen our family business clients creating jobs in this recovery. They are the quiet and patient engine of the econ-omy in their communities,” states Julie Bogle, lead Partner in the Family Business practice at Smith & Gesteland, the award founding sponsor. “They understand their role in the markets they operate in and serve. We love recognizing the wonderful things they have done in Wisconsin.” She stated.

SAVE THE DATE: Dairy Breakfasts

On behalf of our entire family, we would like to thank our loyal customers for your support and business these past 40 years. Without you, we could not have grown to become the dealership we are today. Mid-State Equip-ment was started on the premise of being there to serve the agricultural community– that holds true 40 years later. We are honored and privileged to be involved in agriculture, and to serve all members of the agricultural communities in which we are located.
