HOLY FAITH EPISCOPAL CHURCH

HISTORY

It is an honor to welcome you to this milestone celebration. We would like to give God thanks, and we give Him all the glory, honor and praise for 50 years of ministry! The seeds were sown for the creation of this congregation early in 1964, when Mr. & Mrs. David Schenandoah wrote to the Episcopal Bishop of South Florida asking that a Mission be established in Port St. Lucie. In August the Suffragan Bishop of South Florida the Rt. Rev. James L. Duncan, D.D., of Miami, held a meeting at the Port St. Lucie Marina at which 17 people attended, although the names of 35 interested persons were produced. Mr. & Mrs. John Herrman agreed to contact all known Episcopalians in the area and consent was given by the Bishop for the Mission to be formed.

On September 13th, 1964 the first service was held at the Port St. Lucie Marina under the newly appointed Vicar, the Reverend Marland W. Zimmermann. A portable altar and lectern were constructed by Mr. Gilbert C. Heine, and these were set up in the Marina every Sunday for the next three years, following the custom established by the Methodist, Lutheran and Roman Catholic Churches, all of which had received the hospitality of General Development Corporations Recreation Center. By October 25th a Women's Auxiliary had been established, and has filled a vital place in the life of the parish since that time, not to mention the remarkable fund-raising abilities of the lovely ladies.

Mr. Walter V. Harrison was the first Senior Warden appointed for the congregation, a position he held until his term expired after the church had been built. During his term of office many sites for a future church were inspected, but it was found that the land in the General Development area had too high a value for the financial ability of the Holy Faith congrega-tion. Finally at the end of 1966 the former Hamby Nursery property became available, and since that property was large enough to build a church on, and also had a substantial residence towards the rear of the property the congre-gation purchased the property and sold the vicarage which was located in the residential area.

Father Zimmermann resigned in January 1967 to join his son in Cal-ifornia. The congregation was served on a temporary basis by Father Duane Fifer of Indialantic, still meeting in the Marina for worship every Sunday. Father Martin J. Campbell was appointed Vicar on June 15th, 1967, and as soon as he had settled in; the congregation began active steps to build a church. The Vicar and Mr. David Schenandoah designed a building which would fill the needs of the congregation and yet not be financially extrava-gant. The aim was to combine tradition and dignity with a utilitarian struc-ture with no wasteful frills. The resultant structure is one of which

the entire congregation is proud. Groundbreaking ceremonies were held Oc-tober 7th, 1967, and the church was opened for worship Christmas Eve, 1967, although the pews did not arrive until mid-January. The Ladies of the Church provided all the kitchen fixtures, appliances and furnishings, and all items of furniture in the church were given as memorials by the members and friends. On the Fourth Sunday after Epiphany, 1968, the Church was duly dedicated by the Right Reverend Wallace E. Conkling, S.T.D., retired Bishop of Chicago, who lived in Vero Beach.

Mr. Robert A. Allan, Sr. was appointed Senior Warden for 1968, and in addition to his administrative responsibilities the congregation will be forev-er grateful for the many, many hours of hard work he put in establishing a sprinkler system for the landscaping of the church. It was with great sadness that in the week after Christmas, the Holy Faith Congregation lost both, Wal-ter V. Harrison, their first Senior Warden, and Robert A. Allan, Sr.. Both of these men had devoted all their time and efforts to the work of Holy Faith Church, and a fund was set up to establish a suitable memorial.

Like much of Port St. Lucie, the Holy Faith Episcopal Church had progressed steadily rather than by leaps and bounds. Whereas on 17 people turned out for the first visit of the Bishop, there were 114 in Church on Sun-day morning and 71 in the evening. The usual Sunday Service was at 10:00 am, with weekday Holy Communion Services on Fridays at 9:30 am and also on Holy Days.

Over the years the church expanded the original building, added an extension to the parish hall and a columbarium situated at the south side of the Church. Later a parish center was added to accommodate the churches’ pot-luck dinners, and a place for social events both Church related and for lease to Community Service organizations.

In 1998, with the help of the Diocese, the congregation started a His-panic service. In 2001 three acres of land were added to the existing church property and although that property has not yet been developed, we anticipate future growth on that property.

Over these 50 years, Holy Faith has ministered to thousands of peo-ple, baptized and shared the Sacrament of Holy Eucharist with many. Hun-dreds of people were married, and many others were received. We are very grateful for the vision and work of the first families who started Holy Faith.

In conclusion, we are very thankful for the past and the present, but we look forward for the future with great expectations. Our prayer is that we remain faithful to the ministry of evangelism, reaching out to people who are hungry and thirst for the love of Jesus. Happy 50th Anniversary Holy Faith!

Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation! O my soul, praise him, for he is thy health and salvation! All ye who hear, now to his temple draw near; praise him in glad adoration. Praise to the Lord, who over all things so wondrously reigneth, shelters thee under his wings, yea, so gently sustaineth! Hast thou not seen how thy desires ever have been granted in what he ordaineth? Praise to the Lord, who doth pros-per thy work and defend thee; surely his goodness and mercy here daily attend thee. Ponder anew what the Almighty can do, if with his love he befriend thee.

Praise to the Lord, who, when tem-pests their warfare are waging, who, when the elements madly around thee are raging, biddeth them cease, turneth their fury to peace, Whirlwinds and waters assuaging. Praise to the Lord, who, when dark-ness of sin is abounding, who, when the godless do triumph, all virtue confounding, sheddeth his light, chaseth the horrors of night, saints with his mercy surrounding.

Praise to the Lord, O let all that is in me adore him! All that hath life and breath, come now with praises before him. Let the amen sound from his people again, gladly for all we adore him.

¡Feliz 50 º aniversario, Santa Fe!

PESCADOR DE HOMBRES

Tú has venido a la orilla,

no has buscado ni a sabios ni a ricos.

Tan solo quieres que yo te siga.

Refrán

Señor, me has mirado a los ojos,

sonriendo has dicho mi nombre.

En la arena he dejado mi barca:

junto a Ti buscaré otro mar.

Señor, me has mirado a los ojos...

Tú necesitas mis manos,

mi cansancio que a otros descanse,

amor que quiera seguir amando.

Refrán

Señor, me has mirado a los ojos...

Tú pescador de otros lagos,

ansia eterna de hombres que esperan.

Amigo bueno que así me llamas.

Refrán:

Señor, me has mirado a los ojos…..

LORD, YOU HAVE COME

Lord, You have come to the sea-shore. Neither searching for the rich nor the wise. Desiring only that I should follow.

REFRAIN

O Lord, with Your eyes set upon me. Gently smiling, You have spo-ken my name. All I longed for, I have found by the water. At Your side, I will seek other shores.

Lord, see my goods, my posses-sions. In my boat You find no pow-er, no wealth. Will You accept then my nets and labor?

Refrain

Lord take my hands and direct them. Help me spend myself in seeking the lost. Returning love for the love You gave me.

Refrain

Lord, as I drift on the waters

Be the resting place of my restless heart. My life’s companion, my friend and refuge.

PROCESSIONAL

WITH REJOICING HEARTS

With rejoicing hearts we proclaim your glory;

We have known the fruit of your grace in the past.

Working hand in hand, we become your story;

And we share the dreams and the visions you’ve cast.

Ever faithful to your love, we will bring your kingdom to light.

Touched by your promise, we live by your word,

Bringing your Spirit to every one’s heart.

Challenged to take on your mission of love,

Each member must take part.

With rejoicing hearts….

All generations respond to your call,

Bringing the best of their own minis-try.

Marvelous blend that becomes, through your love,

holy community.

With rejoicing hearts….

Each one empowered to go to the world

Serving and healing as you would have done.

As we progress in the heavenly plan,

We all unite as one.

With rejoicing hearts….
