Audrey Teboho Moja
Professor Teboho Moja’s contributions to the South African society are embodied in her work that
interweaves policy, politics, and activism in her academic profession to benefit the broader society. These
contributions date back to the mid-1980s. As a higher education activist, she was involved in initiatives such
as the National Education Policy Investigation (NEPI) that challenged apartheid policies and made meaningful
intellectual contributions in raising social justice issues, which informed post-apartheid higher education
policy. Her work has expanded beyond South Africa to include the broader African continent where she has
been engaged in advocating for and contributing intellectually to advances in the transformation of African
higher education. She has worked tirelessly to forge collaborative relationships across geographic
boundaries to promote the development of higher education in South Africa and on the continent. She is
still actively involved in leveraging the African Diaspora to strengthen African higher education through her
service on the Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program (CADFP), an initiative that aims to bring the
African diaspora to African universities to participate in collaborative research, curriculum development and
postgraduate student mentorship. She is the founder and editor-in-chief of the Journal of Student Affairs in
Africa (JSAA) which was launched in 2013 and has received accreditation from the Department of Higher
Education, Science and Technology
Professor Moja is a sought-after conference speaker and as keynote speaker has addressed over 18
international conferences and events in diverse geographic locations across the US, Europe and Africa.
She is a recipient of numerous awards which include the MLK award in 2019 at New York University, the
prestigious NRF Lifetime Achievement Award (2019) which is conferred to individuals who have made an
extraordinary contribution of international standard and impact to the development of science in and for
South Africa over an extended period and the Women in International Education award in 2019, conferred
by the Global Leadership League in Berlin.
Her intellectual and public contributions embody the UP vision for “knowledge that makes a difference” to
the development of South Africa, Africa and the global south.

In her thesis, Promoting quality Early Childhood Care and Education through resources in registered Early
Childhood Development centres, the promovenda explored the use of available resources in ECD centres to
promote quality ECCE for young children (birth to four). An interpretative, qualitative multiple case study was
utilised, and the conceptual frameworks underpinning the research included a quality development model,
ecological system levels with crosscutting quality dimensions, and the system theory. Eight participants from
four ECD centres were purposively selected in suburban and township areas of Pretoria. Findings revealed
that ECD centres in the suburban areas charging higher fees had more resources, whereas ECD centres in
lower socio-economic areas lacked learning resources that promoted quality ECCE. This disparity promoted
social injustice and inequality as the advantaged children progressed, while the poor and vulnerable children
struggled to gain access to quality ECCE. A framework for promoting quality ECCE through the availability and
effective use of resources was recommended to serve as a guide to policymakers, researchers, ECD centre-
heads and practitioners in order to promote equal access to quality ECCE for all South African young children.

In her thesis, Experiences of young orphans who transition into extended families in Zimbabwe, the
promovenda explored the lives of young orphans who transitioned into extended families from residential care
centres. This study aimed to understand the experiences of young orphans and gain information on how
extended families adapted to the transition process. The study adopted a qualitative approach and was
situated in the interpretivist paradigm. A multiple case study design was used to investigate five extended
families, young orphans, a social worker and residential care centre administrators. The study established that
although the government provided services in the transitioning of young orphans into extended families in
Zimbabwe, lack of resources inhibited efforts. Extended families were inadequately prepared to accept young
orphans into their homes; they faced financial constraints and struggled to support orphans. Young orphans
experienced multiple psychological challenges.

In her thesis, Die verband tussen ouerskappraktyk en die aggressiewe gedrag van leerlinge in spesiale skole,
the promovenda explored learners' aggressive behaviour with mild intellectual dysfunction. With an average
intelligence quotient of between 55 and 70, these learners are four times more likely to develop aggressive
behaviour. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the parental practices of these learners
caused their aggressive behaviour. The study was approached from a phenomenological perspective, and
qualitative data was generated from fifteen case studies. The main findings showed that aggressive behaviour
was only a symptom of underlying problems. These underlying problems were an unfortunate combination of
harmful parental practices, accumulative negative factors, emotional neglect and a lack of skills to deal with
challenges. The learners in this study were not adequately supported to deal with these problems, and they
were left with unresolved emotions.

In his thesis, Strengthening group work play-based pedagogy to enhance core skills in young learners, the
promovendus employed participatory action research with a qualitative approach located in the interpretivist
paradigm. A professional development programme was utilised with semi-structured interviews, field notes
and an observation schedule as data-gathering instruments. The literature review covered Nigeria and
beyond. It highlighted the need to strengthen group work play-based pedagogy to enhance core skills.
Analysis of data took cognisance of the theoretical framework and reviewed literature. Themes and sub-
themes emerged, highlighting teachers' inadequate knowledge of play-based pedagogy, lack of knowledge
of policy documents and their knowledge and understanding of the core skills. Nigerian teachers were
capacitated on strategies to strengthen group work play-based pedagogy to enhance core skills in young
learners. These strategies such as think-pair-share, jigsaw and buzz group were used to enhance their
knowledge and understanding of group work play-based pedagogy.

In his thesis, Deep learning during the South African National Defence Force's joint Senior Command and
Staff Programme, the promovendus attempted to understand the changing nature of the education of senior
officers on staff programmes using the theory of deep learning as a theoretical lens. Deep learning implies
understanding ideas and relating them to previous knowledge and experience. The focus is on the logic of
academic treaties and critical arguments to become beware of own understanding and application in the
workplace. This study found that the Joint Senior Command and Staff Programme of the South African
National Defence Force only partially adhered to deep learning tenets as envisaged. Therefore, some
significant adjustments have to be made in the programme's educational approach to lay the foundation to
migrate to a postgraduate dispensation.

In her thesis, Conceptualising the influence of sensopathic-focussed play pedagogy on the young learner,
the promovenda conceptualised how teacher-led sensory play pedagogy focuses on tactile and visual senses
potentially facilitates sensory processing in Grade R children to assist in the transition to formal schooling.
The study conceptualised a single framework that integrates key principles of grand theories of play, sensory
play and play-based pedagogies and international best practice. The qualitative research used multiple case
studies based on schools representing learning environments using sensory play and included sensopathic
pathways for indoor and outdoor learning environments. The conceptual framework examined sensory
processing and sensory play integration and how teacher-led activities can introduce sensopathic play in
the learning environment. This highlighted the alignment of sensopathic play in the curriculum as a key in
preparing children for the transition from Grade R.

In her thesis, Language-learning strategies of English second-language learners participating in peer
tutoring, the promovenda explored the language-learning strategies used by English second-language
learners in South Africa. This mixed-methods study explored both the conventional and indigenous
language-learning strategies that second-language learners use in learning English. The findings of this
study indicated that second-language learners frequently use a range of conventional strategies such as
metacognitive, social and cognitive strategies and indigenous strategies that include translanguaging,
humour, word games, and poetry in learning English second language. The researcher proposed a
hybridised second-language learning strategy conceptual framework as a gateway to understanding
second-language learners’ language-learning strategies. This suggested that second-language pedagogies
should consider learners’ indigenous knowledge systems and valorise learners’ translingual identities. This
study recommends a decolonised education approach that allows learners to use all their knowledge
sources to enhance language learning.

In his thesis, Social cohesion in school choir competitions: the experiences of conductors and adjudicators,
the promovendus focused on two competitions of school choirs held annually in South Africa at national
level. The study relied on the Transformative Learning Theory, which examined choral conductors and
adjudicators' perspectives on whether choral competitions could lead to social cohesion. The study found
that choral competitions provide a public platform for learners from different backgrounds and social
divides to express their talent and share their cultural heritage through music. Choir competitions
contribute to social cohesion because they allow participation and inclusion, mutual support networks, and
inter-racial contact between role players. Proceeds of social cohesion are experiences of learning from
others, exchanging and reciprocating, and creating solidarity. The research warns that specific requirements
in rules and policies may inhibit social cohesion leading to others being excluded.

In his thesis, The relationship between teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge about electrostatics and
learners’ performance, the promovendus explored the relationship between teachers’ pedagogical content
knowledge (PCK) of electrostatics and learners’ performance. PCK refers to teachers’ knowledge for
transforming content into forms that are comprehensible to learners. The PCK was viewed as two
manifestations termed ‘reported PCK’ and ‘enacted PCK’. PCK was explored at the concept-specific grain
size. A mixed-method research approach was employed to investigate the relationship both qualitatively
and quantitatively. The results indicated that PCK varied across concepts, supporting the notion that PCK
has a concept-specific nature. Furthermore, learners’ performance was better related to teachers’ enacted
PCK rather than reported PCK. This result implied that enacted PCK impacts learning directly, and therefore
teacher education should focus on teaching practice to develop enacted PCK.

In her thesis, The influence of teacher beliefs and attitudes about project-based learning on
underperforming leaners, the promovenda explored how teacher beliefs and attitudes about project-based
learning influenced underperforming learners. Findings revealed firstly that learners flocked together in
times of challenges. They invoked the spirit of Ubuntu¹ and believed that the success of an individual would
lead to the success of the collective. Secondly, underperforming learners were influenced to embrace
learner agency, which served as a catalyst to improve different skills acquisition. Thirdly, learners
appreciated the skill sets of the workforce fraternity teachers who taught within the context of their different
professions. This study recommends that policymakers consider how schools can collaborate with the
workforce fraternity to enhance the teaching of skills required in the world of work.

In her thesis, Student teacher ethnocentrism: attitudes and beliefs about language, the promovenda
measured student-teachers’ degree of ethnocentrism and explored their attitudes and beliefs about
language-in-education issues. The social identity theory served as the theoretical framework, and a post-
positivist paradigm guided the embedded mixed-method study. A qualitative questionnaire, the
standardised Generalised Ethnocentrism survey and the Language Attitudes of Teachers Scale generated data
sets. The study provides a more comprehensive understanding of how ethnocentrism, social identities and
particular perspectives of language-in-education issues exist on a continuum. Unchecked, such attitudes
and beliefs may have far-reaching consequences for multilingual classroom practices, especially where
English as the medium of instruction is the mother tongue of neither the learners nor the teacher. Findings
also highlighted the formation of social identities based on shared ethnic characteristics. Further research
into a reliable and valid measure of ethnocentrism is needed to help transform teacher education
programmes.
