Project The proposed Sethu Samudram ship canal
will have two legs, one near the PointCalimere called the Bay of Bengal Channeland the other across the Adams Bridge. TheBay of Bengal Channel traverses the PalkBay wherein the sea-bed is mostly soft tohard clayey-sand in nature. The entire coast
ofD
hanushkody Peninsula on the North andthe South is sandy.
While navigational depths will be used inGulf ofMannar from Tuticorin Port toAdams Bridge area, a 20 km long, 300 mwidth canal with 10.7 m draft with two waycontrolled traffic will be created by dredgingshallow area ofAdams Bridge upto 12 mdepth. Similar excavation will be done inPalk Strait, to achieve required draft over astretch of around 36 km. A VTMS isproposed to be located at Rameshwaramisland to control navigation, besides otherinfrastructure including administrativerequirements.
