General Overview: The portion disc usses the census of the Israelites, the washbasin of the Tabernacle, the anointing oils for the priests and kings, the incense offering, and the Sabbath. The Torah then relates the story of the Golden Calf, G-d's anger at the Jewish nation, Moses successfully arguing for Divine forgiveness for the sin, the subsequent breaking of the tablets, and the giving of the second tablets. First Aliyah: G-d commands Moses to take a census of the Jewish adult male population by collecting an atonement offering of half a silver shekel from each individual. The collected silver was melted down, and was made into sockets for the beams of the Tabernacle. G-d instructs Moses to make a copper washstand for the Tabernacle. The priests would use this laver to wash their hands and feet before their service. G-d tells Moses the recipe for making holy "anointing oil." This oil, which was prepared with various aromatic herbs and fine spices, was used to anoint and sanctify the Tabernacle, its vessels, and Aaron and his sons. The remainder of the oil was put aside, and was used to anoint kings and high priests of future generations. G-d also gives Moses the formula for the incense which was offered twice-daily in the Tabernacle. The duplication of the anointing oil or incense for personal use is prohibited. G-d imbues Bezalel with wisdom, and appoints him to be the chief craftsman of the Tabernacle and its contents. G-d appoints Oholiab as his assistant. This lengthy aliyah concludes with G-d telling the Jewish people to observe the Shabbat, the eternal sign between Him and the Children of Israel. Second Aliyah: After G-d revealed Himself to the entire nation at Mount Sinai and told them

the Ten Commandments, Moses ascended the mountain where he remained for forty days. There he was to study the Torah and receive the Tablets. The Jews miscalculate when Moses is supposed to return, and when he doesn't appear on the day when they anticipate him, they grow impatient and demand of Aaron to make for them a new god. Aaron cooperates, all along intending to postpone and buy time until Moses' return, but despite his efforts, a Golden Calf emerges from the flames. The festivities and sacrifices start early next morning. Moses pleads with an incensed G-d to forgive the Jews' sin. G-d acquiesces and relents from His plan to annihilate the Jews. Moses comes down with the Tablets, sees the idolatrous revelry, and breaks the Tablets. Moses enlists the Tribe of Levi to punish the primary offenders. Three thousand idol worshippers are executed on that day. Moses ascends Mount Sinai again, in an attempt to gain complete atonement for the sin. G-d tells Moses to lead the Jews towards the Promised Land, but insists that He won't be leading them personally; instead an angel will be dispatched to lead them. Seeing G-d's displeasure with the Jews, Moses takes his own tent and pitches it outside the Israelite encampment. This tent becomes the center of study and spirituality until the Tabernacle is inaugurated. Third Aliyah: Moses ask s G-d to reconsider the matter of the angel leading them. G-d reconsiders, and agrees to lead them Himself again. Moses then requests that G-d's presence never manifest itself on any other nation other than the Jews.

Fourth Aliyah: G-d's agrees to Moses' request that His presence only dwell amongst the Jews. Moses requests to be shown G-d's glory. G-d agrees, but informs Moses that he will only be shown G-d's "back," not G-d's "face." Fifth Aliyah: G-d tells Moses to carve new tablets upon which G-d will engrave the Ten Commandments. Moses takes the new tablets up to Mt. Sinai, where G-d reveals His glory to Moses while proclaiming His Thirteen Attributes of Mercy. Sixth Aliyah: G-d seals a covenant with Moses, assuring him again that His presence will only dwell with the Jews. G-d informs the Jewish people that He will drive the Canaanites from before them. He instructs them to destroy all vestiges of idolatry from the land, and to refrain from making any covenants with its current inhabitants. The Jews are then commanded not to make molten gods, to observe the three festivals, not to eat chametz on Passover, to sanctify male firstborn humans and cattle, and not to cook meat together with milk. Seventh Aliyah: Moses descends Mount Sinai with the second tablets, and unbeknownst to him beams of light were projecting off his face. Aaron and the people are originally afraid of him. Moses teaches the people the Torah he studied on the mountain. Moses wears a veil on his face from that time on, but removes it when speaking to G-d and when repeating G-d's words to the people. ⬢

PARSHAT PARAH In preparation for the upcoming festival of Passover, when every Jew had to be in a state of ritual purity, the section of Parah (Numbers 19) is read from a second Sefer Torah. Parah relates the laws of the Red Heifer with which a person contaminated by contact with a dead body was purified.⬢

AND FINALLY...

of Israel more than 33 centuries ago. They had drained Egypt of its wealth, and then the Red Sea spewed out the jewels that had adorned the drowned Egyptians. So they, too, had too much gold. But back then, people had a more direct approach to things. Instead of devising all these ingenious ways of saying, "Hey, look! I have more money than I know what to do with! But don't worry! I'll keep on doing my darnest to have even more!", they cast a calf of pure gold, put it up on a pedestal, and worshipped it.

How did G-d address the gold-sickness of His newly chosen people? He didn't abolish gold. He didn't even take away theirs. He told them to use their gold to build Him a Sanctuary.

Compulsive overeating is a horrible disease: it's unhealthy, it can even kill you. But the urge to eat is not only healthy---it's vital to life itself.

The same is true of every negative phenomenon. There is nothing intrinsically bad in G-d's world: every evil is a perverted good, every psychosis a healthy instinct gone awry.

So before we get all riled up over that woman with the two secretaries, let us try to understand the tendency of humans to splurge, flaunt and luxuriate in their wealth. We understand why we need food; we understand why we need shelter; but why do we crave gold?

In essence, the craving for gold is a yearning for transcendence. It is man saying: I am not content to merely exist and subsist; I want to exalt in life, I want to touch its magnificence and sublimity.

Of course, flying your palm trees to Miami each winter is not sublime. It's pathetic. It is a gross distortion of the most noble strivings of the human soul. The answer, however, is not to squelch these strivings, but to purge them of their negative expressions. Use your yearning for gold to make a home for G-d.⬢

GOOD AS GOLD A recent New York Times article examined what Americans are doing with their money these days. One family installed palm trees on their Hamptons property which they fly to Florida each winter (the palm trees, not the property). A woman hired a "personal secretary" to tend to her hairdresser appointments, and then hired an assistant to the secretary. "It's like cats," she explained. "You need two of them so that they can keep each other company while you're away."

A similar problem plagued the Children

THE BEST KEPT SECRET IN THE WORLD Life, as we all know, is a series of blunders. We never, never ever, get it right the first time.

Is it supposed to be this way? Obviously not. Why not? Well, if something is a blunder, then, by definition, it's something that should not have happened. But never mind semantics — let's talk gut feeling. I trust my intuition more than any syllogism. Well, every time I begin to see another of my life's blunders developing, every filament in my gut screams: "Noooo! This should not be happening...!"

And yet, strip life of all its false starts, of all its wrong turns, missed opportunities, naive presumptions, fumbling first attempts and learned-it-the hard-way experiences, and what's left? Nothing worth writing home about, never mind going through all that trouble to live a life for.

Okay, then, let's say we put intuition and gut feeling aside and say that blunders are supposed to happen, as part of G-d's grand plan to make life worthwhile. But if that's the case, we're back in the bland and meaningless space of a pre-programmed life that's not worth going through all that trouble for. Besides, how could my blunders be things that G-d wanted all along to happen, if many, most, (all?) of them result from actions which G-d specifically told me He doesn't want to happen?

That's the crazy thing about blunders. Without them, there's nothing. Yet if there's one thing we can about them say with absolute conviction, it's that they're not supposed happen. How can something not supposed to be and supposed to be at the same time?

G-d knows, but He's not telling.⬢

PARSHA INSIGHTS

The first time that I had the privilege of meeting the Rebbe, he told me that he stayed for some

time in the home of my grandfather, Rabbi Chanoch Etkin, in Luga, Russia.

This must have been in 1926, when he was engaged to be married to Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka, the daughter of the Rebbe Rayatz. The Rebbe was then heavily involved in his future father-in-law’s educational programs and was working underground.

Just to illustrate how dangerous this work was — the following year, the Soviets arrested the Rebbe Rayatz and sentenced him to death for the crime of “counter-revolutionary activity” — namely, promoting Judaism. It was only due to international pressure that he was released but was exiled from Russia.

The Soviets were after the Rebbe too. They were searching for him, seeking to arrest him, so he had to flee.

This is how it happened that he was brought to my grandparent’s house, and he stayed there for several months until it was safe for him to leave. He slept and ate there, with my grandmother taking care of his needs, and he studied Torah with my grandfather. They developed a deep friendship although my grandfather was not a chasid but a follower of Mussar, the Jewish ethical movement.

I believe that, because my grandfather took him in during a time when his life was in danger, I had the merit to develop an especially close connection to the Rebbe.

I once asked him about what happened back in Russia, and he related to me a chasidic story — which I don’t recall precisely — about a man who rows a boat across a lake to take people to the Garden of Eden. But he himself cannot enter until he finds somebody to take his place. The Rebbe said that he ended up putting his life in danger because he couldn’t leave Soviet Russia until he found somebody else to continue the holy work of the Jewish underground. Finally, someone was found to take his place, and that is when he went into hiding at my grandfather’s house.

Because of the kindness that my grandparents showed him then, I was privileged to have free access to the Rebbe, to meet him privately many times, and to be present at Purim in 1971 — together with the President of Israel, Zalman Shazar — to hear the reading of

Megillat Esther in the Rebbe’s presence. I was most touched when Shazar asked the Rebbe, motioning toward me, “Do you know this young man?” and the Rebbe answered, “Of course! He is an old and good friend.” He didn’t mean that I was old — I was then in my forties — but that we had known each other for a long time.

In the many meetings I had with the Rebbe over the years, we discussed the coming of Mashiach, we discussed the politics of Israel, and we discussed the goings-on within the rabbinate of Israel. We had many talks about the policies of my late brother-in-law, Rabbi Shlomo Goren, who was the rabbi of the IDF during the Six Day War and who later served as the third chief rabbi of Israel. And, of course, we spoke about my sainted father, Rabbi David Cohen, who was a great Kabbalist known as “the Nazir of Jerusalem” because he never cut his hair or drank wine in keeping with the ancient biblical tradition.

As we talked, I couldn’t help but be amazed that the Rebbe, sitting in a little room in Brooklyn, knew everything that was going on in the world and certainly everything that was going on in Israel. He knew about the different political parties, and the political pressures on the lay leaders and the rabbis.

He expressed the opinion that they should never agree to retreat from any place in Eretz Yisrael for the illusion of peace. This would not have the desired effect, he said, for giving up land would only endanger the safety of Israeli Jews and non-Jews. “Certainly, we want peace,” he said, “but the way to bring true peace is by being strong.” To support this, he quoted Psalm 29: “G-d will give power to His people; G-d will bless His people with peace.”

I suppose because we had many such frank discussions that, on one occasion, I had the chutzpah to ask the Rebbe why he won’t come to Israel. Of course, I immediately added, “I’m not telling the Rebbe what to do, but I know that if the Rebbe came, it would change the entire landscape of the country and greatly benefit Judaism.”

He answered me, and I do believe that I was one of very few people who got an answer to this question.

He said, speaking in Yiddish, “I know how to go there, but I don’t know how to come back.” He believed that it was not permissible to leave the Holy Land, and therefore he could never return to the United States. “And I have work to do here … I haven’t finished my work here.”

Then he explained that he took upon himself not to be any place so far away that he could not reach the graveside of the Rebbe Rayatz in Queens within twenty-four hours. He mentioned that the chasidim of Montreal invited him for a ceremony there — I do not recall if it was a dedication of a new building or of a new Torah scroll — but he didn’t go because of the distance from New York.

I am sorry he never came to Israel. I do think that, if he could have come, it would have changed history because of the tremendous impact that he would have had. But he maintained that he needed to remain in the United States where he could have maximum influence on the Jews of the Diaspora.______________Rabbi Shear Yashuv Cohen (1927-2016) served as the chief rabbi of Haifa, Israel, for thirty-six years. > 5699 — 1939, the Previous Rebbe asked his son-in-law, the Rebbe, to write a comprehensive treatise analyzing how the menorah was kindled in the beit hamikdash from the perspective of Halachah, Kabbalah, and Chasidut. The Rebbe accepted the assignment, writing a thorough book of 11 chapters, which was published in 1998 under the title Reshimat Hamenorah.1

Chaque membre du Peuple juif reçoit l’injonction d’apporter la contribution précise d’un demi-Chékel d’argent pour le Sanctuaire. Des instructions sont également données concernant la fabrication du bassin d’eau du Sanctuaire, de l’huile d’onction et des encens. Les artisans « au cœur sage », Betsalel et Aholiav sont chargés de la construction du Sanctuaire et une fois encore le peuple reçoit le commandement d’observer le Chabbat.

Moché ne redescend pas du Mont Sinaï quand le Peuple l’attend et celui-ci fabrique un veau d’or et l’adore. D.ieu propose alors de détruire cette nation pécheresse mais Moché intercède en sa faveur. Il descend de la montagne, portant les Tables de la Loi sur lesquelles sont gravés les Dix Commandements. Quand il voit le peuple danser autour de son idole, il brise les Tables, détruit le veau d’or et fait mettre à mort les principaux instigateurs. Il retourne alors vers D.ieu pour Lui dire : « Si Tu ne leur pardonnes pas, efface-moi du livre que Tu as écrit ».

D.ieu pardonne mais dit que le résultat de ce péché sera ressenti pendant de nombreuses générations. Au début, D.ieu propose de leur envoyer Son ange mais Moché insiste pour que D.ieu Lui-même accompagne Son peuple vers la Terre Promise.

Moché prépare de nouvelles Tables et une fois de plus, grimpe sur la montagne où D.ieu écrit de nouvelles Tables de l’Alliance. Sur la montagne, Moché perçoit également une vision des « treize attribut de miséricorde ». A son retour, le visage de Moché irradie d’une telle lumière qu’il doit le cacher derrière un voile qu’il n’enlève que pour parler à D.ieu et enseigner Ses lois au peuple.

LES DÉBRIS INTELLECTUELS

« D.ieu dit à Moché : ‘Taille-toi deux Tables de pierre semblables aux premières ; et J’inscrirai sur ces Tables les paroles qui étaient sur les premières que tu as brisées’ » (Chemot 34 :1)

« Taille-toi » : [D.ieu] lui montra une carrière de saphir sous sa tente, et lui dit : « les débris seront à toi. » C’est ainsi que Moché devint très riche.

Les premières Tables, sur lesquelles les Dix Commandements avaient été initialement écrits, étaient faites « par la Main de D.ieu ». Elles furent brisées par Moché quand le peuple servit un veau d’or, violant l’alliance avec D.ieu, comme elle figurait précisément sur les Tables de la Loi. Le peuple se repentit et D.ieu accepta de donner à nouveau la Torah à Israël. Cette fois-ci, en revanche, D.ieu ordonna à Moché de fabriquer lui-même les Tables. L’inscription serait à nouveau faite par la Main divine mais les

Tables elles-mêmes seraient de fabrication humaine, taillées par Moché.

Dans sa première « édition », la Torah était complètement d’origine divine : non seulement son contenu mais également son support. Dans la même perspective, le contenu des deux premières Tables consistait en une communication de la Sagesse divine claire et concise.

Si nous n’avions pas erré, en adorant le veau d’or, notre étude de la Torah serait dépourvue des discussions, débats et tergiversations qu’elle connaît aujourd’hui.

Dans les secondes Tables, D.ieu inscrivit Sa sagesse sur un support créé par l’homme. En conséquence, la Sagesse divine nous est désormais seulement accessible par l’outil limité et déficient qu’est l’esprit humain.

LE DIVIN ET L’HUMAIN DANS LA TORAH

Pour s’exprimer en d’autres termes, disons que les premières Tables n’incorporaient que « la Torah Écrite », la révélation de D.ieu à l’homme, alors que les secondes Tables demandaient l’ajout de « la Torah Orale », le système d’interprétation transmis à travers les générations, sans lequel la Torah Écrite serait pour nous un livre ésotérique. Quand Khomeini arriva au pouvoir en 1976 en Iran, le monde occidental ne savait que penser de sa révolution. Mais bien vite, la nature mystérieuse de son gouvernement fit place à un danger bien réel : les quelques cinquante employés de l’ambassade américaine à Téhéran furent retenus en otages – en violation flagrante de toutes les règles internationales garantissant leur sécurité et leur immunité diplomatique. Aux États-Unis, l’incertitude régnait : que voulait Khomeini ? Il ne formulait aucune demande !

Le département d’Etat (le Ministère des affaires étrangères américain) pensait que le tyran voulait de l’argent en échange des otages. Le Pentagone (le Ministère de la défense) supposait qu’il lui fallait des armes. Mais, quoi qu’on fît, il n’y avait pas de réponse et nul ne savait comment dénouer la crise. Chacun avait des idées mais personne n’avait de renseignements précis.

Le secrétaire général de l’ONU de l’époque décida de se rendre à Téhéran pour éclaircir le mystère : après tout, il était un homme important et pensait ne rien risquer ! N’importe quel gouvernement assurerait sa sécurité. Mais quand il prit un taxi à sa sortie de l’aéroport, ce véhicule fut attaqué par une foule hurlant des slogans hostiles : il fut obligé de rebrousser chemin et de reprendre l’avion pour New York – sans avoir pu faire avancer la situation. Quand il arriva sain et sauf à son bureau, il ne put qu’avouer : « Il n’y a rien à faire ! Ce n’est pas une situation logique ! Leur unique motivation est : ils nous haïssent, nous les Occidentaux et les Américains en particulier ! ».

L’ONU demanda alors à Khomeini si des hommes de religion pourraient rendre visite aux otages. Il accepta. Les fonctionnaires trouvèrent des prêtres qui acceptèrent d’aller rendre visite aux otages. Mais comme il y avait aussi deux otages juifs, on pensa aussi à envoyer un rabbin. Bien entendu, il n’était pas question d’envoyer un rabbin américain et on demanda donc à un rabbin résidant au Mexique s’il accepterait la mission – tout en précisant que, vu les

méthodes de voyous en usage en Iran, nul ne pourrait garantir qu’il ne deviendrait pas lui aussi un otage ! Rav Hershberg demanda à réfléchir ; il prit l’avion pour New York et obtint un rendez-vous avec le Rabbi de Loubavitch. Pendant plus de deux heures, ils discutèrent et le Rabbi l’encouragea à accepter la mission. Quand Rav Hershberg s’apprêta à quitter le bureau, le Rabbi ajouta : « N’oubliez pas d’emporter une Menorah, le chandelier de ‘Hanouccah ! ». Or, on était en plein été… Il comprit qu’il y avait là quelque chose d’étrange. Il rappela l’ONU pour signifier qu’il était d’accord de partir mais on lui apprit que Khomeini avait changé d’avis et que toute l’opération était annulée.

Quand arriva la fin du mois de décembre, l’ONU revint à la charge, rappelant au tyran que les otages avaient besoin d’encouragement spirituel au moment de leurs fêtes et, cette fois, ce fut accepté. Contacté, Rav Hershberg comprit pourquoi le Rabbi lui avait demandé d’emporter une Menorah et se rendit à Téhéran en compagnie de deux prêtres. On les amena à l’ambassade – on était le 4ème soir de ‘Hanouccah – et ils purent parler librement avec les otages : bien entendu, ils se doutaient que la salle était truffée de micros et de caméras et se contentèrent d’échanger des paroles sans importance. Dans un coin de la salle, Rav Hershberg sortit sa Menorah, expliqua aux deux otages juifs que le Rabbi avait pensé à eux. Les trois hommes allumèrent la Menorah, entonnèrent des chants traditionnels et, bien vite, toute la communauté juive de Téhéran apprit qu’à l’ambassade américaine, des Juifs avaient allumé le chandelier de ‘Hanouccah et étaient encore en vie ! Il y avait donc de l’espoir…

Le vendredi suivant, la prière musulmane réunit un million de gens dans les rues de Téhéran, un million ! C’était une des rares fois où le peuple allait prier avec son leader : une gigantesque estrade fut érigée devant le palais pour Khomeini qui était encore très populaire et sa famille, une autre pour les dignitaires et une

autre pour les visiteurs. Tous priaient et, à un certain moment, toute l’assemblée se prosterna : un million de gens se prosternèrent en même temps. Tous sauf un : Rav Hershberg. Il resta droit, figé à sa place. Bien vite, la police l’entoura et lui signifia rudement que Khomeini lui-même voulait savoir pourquoi il ne s’était pas prosterné lui aussi. Il répliqua qu’il était juif et n’avait le droit de se prosterner que devant D.ieu. De plus, les gens priaient dans une langue qu’il ne comprenait pas et il n’avait donc voulu prendre aucun risque. Dix minutes plus tard, le fils de Khomeini lui dit que son père souhaitait lui parler. On peut imaginer ce que ressentait alors le rabbin. Mais l’homme le plus puissant d’Iran le salua et exprima – par l’intermédiaire d’un traducteur – combien il avait apprécié son honnêteté car ce rabbin ne s’était pas conduit comme les autres et ne l’avait pas considéré comme un être stupide qu’on peut et qu’on doit flatter. Rav Hershberg en profita pour demander un rendez-vous qui fut fixé au lundi suivant dans la villa du gouvernant.

Le vendredi soir, Rav Hershberg décida de se rendre à la synagogue dirigée par Rav Ezra’hia. Tous les Juifs en furent informés (par des moyens détournés) et la rue était pleine de gens qui voulaient voir de leurs propres yeux l’homme qui, tel le Morde’haï de la Meguila, ne s’était pas prosterné, qui avait allumé une Menorah et qui était encore vivant. La rue était si pleine qu’il eut du mal à se frayer un chemin dans la foule. Finalement, après la prière, il monta au 2ème étage de la synagogue et s’adressa aux gens massés dans la rue pour les encourager à rester fidèles à leur identité juive.

Lundi, Rav Hershberg se rendit chez Khomeini et ils discutèrent de tout, vraiment de tout, durant des heures et des heures. Rav Hershberg expliqua par exemple que le symbole du Maguen David, l’étoile à six branches qui était brodée entre autres sur le rouleau de la Torah et sur son sac en velours contenant ses Téfilines faisait partie de la tradition juive depuis des siècles et n’était pas spécifique de l’emblème de l’Etat d’Israël. Khomeini ne le savait pas et émit immédiatement un décret « à publier dans toutes les provinces de l’empire » (selon les termes de la Meguila…) permettant à tous les Juifs de porter des sacs de Téfilines avec l’étoile de David.

Des mois plus tard, la guerre éclata entre l’Iran et l’Irak. Le couvre-feu fut proclamé et nul n’avait le droit de sortir de chez soi la nuit – sous peine de mort. Ceci posait un problème pour les Juifs qui devaient se rendre encore

QU’EST-CE QUE LE ‘HAMETS ?

Durant Pessa’h, on ne doit ni posséder ni consommer du ‘Hamets. Il faudra donc, avant le mercredi 8 avril 2020 à 10h16*, arrêter de manger tout aliment à base de céréale fermentée comme par exemple, le pain, les céréales, les pâtes, les gâteaux et certains alcools et on brûlera le 'Hamets avant 11h35*.

Concernant les médicaments et les produits d’hygiène, on consultera les listes éditées à cette occasion par les organismes

dans le labyrinthe de la logique talmudique, retardée par les faux départs, les propositions réfutées, les nuances ambigües et le raisonnement sinueux qui caractérisent l’étude de l’homme.

Et pourtant, avec les secondes Tables, nous acquîmes une dimension de la Torah que les premières n’auraient pu nous donner. Selon les mots du Midrach : « D.ieu dit à Moché : ‘Ne regrette pas les premières Tables qui ne contenaient que les Dix Commandements. Dans les secondes Tables, Je te donne également la Hala’ha, le Midrach et la Aggadah’. »

Dans la même veine, le Talmud déclare : « Si Israël n’avait pas péché avec le veau d’or, il n’aurait reçu que les cinq livres de Moché et le livre de Yehochoua. Pourquoi ? Parce que, comme le déclare le verset (Ecclésiastes 1 :18) : ‘Beaucoup de sagesse vient par beaucoup de chagrin.’ »

En effet, le labeur dans l’étude de la Torah fait gagner une profondeur de la connaissance qu’une étude tranquille ne peut

(CONTINUER DE LA PAGE 13) ». Comme ces Tables étaient taillées dans du saphir massif, ces « débris » devinrent pour Moché une grande source de richesse.

Quand les étudiants de la Torah passent de nombreuses heures à la poursuite d’un raisonnement pour finalement le rejeter, ou quand ils dépensent de l’énergie et de la sagacité dans un débat dans lequel ils sont défaits par leurs condisciples, cela peut paraître un gâchis malheureux. Combien auraient-ils préféré voir directement la vérité, s’ils avaient la capacité d’absorber directement la Lumière divine, sans avoir recours aux circonvolutions de l’intellect humain !

Mais le « gâchis », les « débris » des secondes Tables, dit D.ieu à Moché, est Mon cadeau pour toi. C’est le dividende du processus douloureux de la repentance, du sursaut après le péché et l’échec et de l’élan vers un engagement pour Moi, plus profond. Chéris-le car il va te servir de source de grandes richesses spirituelles.⬢

C’est pourquoi on a coutume de bien nettoyer la maison, le magasin, le bureau, la voiture etc… avant Pessa’h, afin d’éliminer toutes les miettes.

Pour éviter de posséder, même involontairement du ‘Hamets à Pessa’h, on remplira une procuration de vente, qu’on remettra à un rabbin compétent. Celui-ci se chargera alors de vendre tout le ‘Hamets à un non-Juif. Cette procuration de vente peut être apportée au rabbin ou lui être envoyée par courrier, fax ou Internet et

apporter.

Un enthousiasme émerge à l’égard d’une vérité qui naît de la réfutation de contre-vérités qu’une révélation, la plus limpide soit-elle, ne pourrait susciter.

La régression causée par le péché d’Israël et la brisure des premières Tables nous donnèrent le potentiel de parvenir à une reconnaissance de la Sagesse divine plus profonde que celle qui aurait dérivé d’une Torah supra humaine.

LE PROFIT DANS LES DÉBRIS

C’est là que réside la signification profonde de l’enrichissement de Moché par les « débris » des secondes Tables, comme cela est relaté dans le Talmud et cité dans le commentaire de Rachi sur la Torah. La Torah nous dit que D.ieu commanda à Moché : « Taille-toi deux Tables dans la pierre », pour remplacer celles qui avaient été brisées à cause du péché du Peuple Juif. Les mots « taille-toi », « Pessol Le’ha », en hébreu, peuvent aussi être interprétés comme signifiant : « les débris (Pessolèt) seront à toi

Il n’est pas nécessaire d’avoir terminé tout son ménage pour dresser la liste de ce qu’on envisage de vendre.

Nous nous y sommes ardemment préparés, elle est là : la fête de Pourim emplit l’univers dès le début de cette semaine. Hâtons-nous de relever qu’elle ne se limite pas à ses jours de célébration mais qu’elle illumine bien toute la semaine et sans doute largement au-delà. Cela précisé, comment vit-on Pourim ? Cette fête est évidemment liée à des circonstances historiques précises : l’exil du peuple juif à Babylone après la destruction du premier Temple, la situation à la cour d’Assuérus, les jeux de pouvoir etc. Il y a là tant d’éléments spécifiques qu’on ne peut que se demander quelle peut être notre relation avec de tels événements. Et pourtant la fête de Pourim est si ancrée dans la conscience juive qu’elle retentit comme la joie indépassable qui entraîne chacun dans un bonheur sans limites.

Peut-être est-ce justement ce caractère qui la rend si précieuse ? Nous vivons, comme nos ancêtres à Babylone, en un temps d’exil où le Temple ne se dresse pas sur sa colline à Jérusalem et où notre sort paraît dépendre de facteurs hors de notre portée. Nous vivons aussi un temps d’inquiétude plus ou moins justifiée et la crainte du lendemain prend parfois des aspects qu’on a peine à contenir. Voici donc que nous ressentons avec une intensité nouvelle une

certaine instabilité des choses. Et même si nous vivons généralement dans des conditions matérielles dont nos ancêtres ne pouvaient même pas rêver, ce sentiment d’instabilité, d’incertitude crée une sorte d’inconfort au quotidien. Et Pourim arrive. Et la fête fait monter en nous la grande symphonie de l’espérance et de la confiance.

Car il y a ici un véritable combat à mener en soi-même et dans la société où nous nous trouvons. Pourim nous dit que les drames annoncés ne se réalisent que si on les laisse se développer. La fête nous rappelle que regarder le monde positivement est une manière essentielle de lui apporter la guérison essentielle qu’il attend, qu’elle soit matérielle ou morale. Dans ce combat, chacun est un acteur que nul ne peut remplacer. Il nous faut être ces porteurs de foi et d’enthousiasme que rien n’arrête, pas même les soucis du temps ou les perspectives moins satisfaisantes. Il en a toujours été ainsi, l’avenir est entre nos mains. Comme Morde’haï le fit au temps historique de Pourim, il nous appartient de lui donner sa direction : celle de la vie et de la joie. Un combat qui nous dépasse ? Certainement pas, Pourim est passé par là !⬢

L’ABANDON ET LES RETROUVAILLES

Un verset enseigne (Isaïe 54 : 7) : « Un petit instant Je t’ai abandonné et avec une grande miséricorde, Je te rassemblerai ». C’est ainsi que D.ieu décrit Son attitude pendant l’exil et lors de la venue de Machia’h. Nous observons que notre peuple a enduré des souffrances innombrables pendant le « petit instant » d’abandon. Comme elle sera donc merveilleuse la « grande miséricorde » qui y mettra fin !⬢

Si vous vous dressez fièrement et ne vous prosternez pas – fièrement mais sans arrogance – si vous respectez vos valeurs, alors même le tyran qui fait trembler le monde entier vous respectera !

Ce qui est intéressant à propos de cette histoire, c’est que ce fut la seule fois dans l’histoire que Pourim tomba à ‘Hanouccah, et, qui plus est, dans la capitale de l’ancienne Perse…⬢
