Parquet
What is parquet?
The word literally means "wooden floor"
Parquet is a collective for many different kinds of wooden floors. Some examples are; traditional parquet (tapis or bourgogne), mosaic,
planks, woodblock, stab parquet.

General
Growth rings going across thethickness of the plank
no distortion of the wood
mechanical fixing (nails) isdifficult
TangentialRadial
Growth rings going across thewidht of the plank
bigger chance to distortion
mechanical fixing is easy
How the radial and tangential directions of the tissue are arranged in a piece
of wood has a dramatic effect on its response to shrinkage
and expansions.

General
To be considered is the most important characteristic of all: after
wood has been dried and converted into useable parts from thetree, it changes size according to the amount of moisture in the air.
Wood is a hygroscopic material which means that wood will adaptto the circumstances in the environment. If the surrounding aircontains more moisture than the wood, it will take up moisture untilthe moisture content of air and wood are the same. This moistureexchange is reversible. If wood contains more moisture than thesurrounding air, it will give off moisture until the moisture
equilibrium of air and wood is reached. The net result is shrinkageof the wood.

General
Quite often moisture from the subfloor is not the cause of allproblems but the Relative Humidity is (R.H.)
Relative humidity is a measure of the amount of water in the aircompared with the amount of water the air can hold at a certaintemperature and air pressure. If it rains the R.H. will increase. When it freezes the R.H. will decrease. This means that the R.H.changes by season or even by day. The R.H. can be checked bymeans of a hygrometer.
Parquet is dried to approx. 9%-11%, which is a typical moisturecontent of wood in equilibrium with indoor air humidity(50%-65%). According to table 1 the moisture content of wood,at a R.H. of 55%-65% and a temperature of 20C, is 9%-11%.

At a low R.H. wood will give off moisture until the moisture equilibriumof air and wood is reached. The net result is shrinkage of the parquet. At a high R.H. wood will take up moisture until the moisture content ofair and wood are the same. The wood will expand in its width and
thickness but not in its length.
The degree in which wood expands is depending on several aspects.Beside width and thickness it also depends on the kind of wood.

In the following table can be seen that when the R.H. variatesbetween 55 and 65%, the warping (expansion/shrinking) of oak is0,47%. In other words, at variations between 55-65%, the
difference will be 47 mm. at 1 meter (in width).Variations between 55-65% is ideal and not realistic. More realisticare variations between 50-70%. In that case the warping of oak is0,99% or 1 cm per meter. In a room of 4 meter wide the expansion
or shrinking will be 4 cm. With all its consequences

Parquet types
Shrink and expansion of timbercauses very large forces onsubfloor and adhesion
Planks
To be bonded only with PU orMS based adhesives
Not stable, warping because of wood dimensions and humidity
(Extreme) shrinkage or expansion is to be expected
Warping such as cupping or springing may occur because ofthe fact that dimensional changes are not equal in all directions

Parquet Types: Wood types
Maple & Cherry: very sensitive
to humidity!
Beech: extremely moisturesensitive; large deformations
Tropical wood types: often high
oil content and sensitive to water
ex:Afzelia: stains in combinationwith water
ex Weng: very difficult to bond
with adhesive
Oak:
Durable, easy to installand to bond to thesubfloor
Not very expensive
Large marketshare(approx. 90%)
For smaller format oakflooring, Dispersion orAlcohol based adhesivecan be used
Always use MS or 2K- PUadhesive. MS is highlyelastic, accommodates very
nervous wood
Normal wood Nervous/Moisture sensitivewood

Subfloors: Humidity
Moisture = 95% of all problems in installing wood flooring!
Subfloor with ventilated cellar
Must be well ventilated
No traces of condensation
Subfloor without ventilated cellar
Must be protected from risinghumidity by PE Vapour Foil
Subfloor has to be perfectly dry
- Max 2% residual humidity in screed- Max 0,5% in anhydrite/calciumsulfate
based subfloors
Humidity must be measured before installing parquet !

17
Subfloor types: Screed (sand-cement)
Mixture screed (sand-cement)
Very common subfloor in W-Europe: 80% of cases
Maximum residual humidity: 2% Typical Problems
Quality varies a lot, very dependent on local suppliers
Always test the strength of the subfloor by hitting it with a
hammer and scratching it with a sharp object. If the subfloorstays intact it is sufficiently strong.
Powdery: too much sand: Prime with Soudal WBPR-21P
deep sealer
Burned: (less common) too much cement: prime withWBPR-21P deep sealer
Traces of adhesives, sealant or paint: remove and primewith WBPR-11P surface primer

18
Subfloor types: Ceramic Tiles
Tiles have to be placed on a solid subfloor (preferably with
vapour foil)
Tiles placed directly on sand may absorb humidity from
the soil Not porous, therefore water and solvent containing
adhesives are not advised
Tiles must be sanded and cleaned very good beforeapplying the adhesive
MS-30P gives a very good adhesion on ceramic tiles, even without primer

19
Subfloor types: Anhydrite
Calciumsulfate (CaSO4) is verymoisture sensitive!
Often applied in new houses or in
the industry
Rising in popularity (cheap)
Non-porous
Calciumsulfate forms a skin at thesurface, therefore very poor adhesion.Remove the toplayer by sandingbefore applying the primer andbonding the parquet
Usually very plane (self-levelling)
Maximum residual humidity: 0,5%
MS-30P can be applied without primer (Tested onsite with large format planks!)
