The Parliamentary Leaders Program is high-impact, time-optimised and effective for leaders like you. The program was designed with input from Parliamentarians.

This exclusive program for Parliamentarians for all parties will strengthen and grow your capability to respond to the challenges of the 21st Century.

WHY PARTICIPATE?

Expand your contribution

to your constituency

Parliamentarian

Deliver greater results for your staff,

supporters and voters

Grow your influence in Parliament

Our session leaders provide a stimulating and intellectually challenging experience using:

• Small group discussions about leadership, common challenges and governing in the 21st Century

• Scenario building where you experience life as a politician in a future you ‘create’

• Workshops with specialists to learn how to use practical decision-making tools

• Case studies where you can learn from past experience and work with colleagues on issues that matter to you

• Guest speakers to expose you to new ways of thinking about leadership and governing in complex environments

• Reflection to foster insight

AS LEADERS TODAY, POLITICIANS FACE A MORE COMPLEX, PRESSURED AND DIFFICULT JOB THAN EVER BEFORE

THE EXPERIENCE

“The Australian Labor Party is proud to support a non-partisan initiative such as this, which builds on democratic traditions of public leadership and contribution, while also equipping participants with the necessary skills for Parliament in the 21st century.”

- President of the Australian Labor Party, The Hon. Mark Butler MP

“Having seen the beneficial outcomes of this program in its first three years, the Liberal Party is eager to see it continue to grow and serve our parliamentary leaders. There is clearly significant benefit to participants.”

- President of the Liberal Party of Australia, The Hon. Nick Greiner AC

Transform your capabilities in two extraordinary days. The program will build your understanding, connections and capabilities in three main themes:

THE CONTEXT

THE LEADER

THE CHANGE AGENT

What forces are shaping the 21st century? What are the implications of complexity and the rapid rate of change for governing Australia?

What are the societal roles, goals and constraints of Australian society, including governments, the public service, business and community sector?

What does this mean for me as a parliamentarian? What will it be like to govern over the next decade? What capabilities will I need as a senior politician to be effective? What could I do to facilitate these changes?

What are the intellectual and strategic foundations for the next period of major reform in Australia?

What are my aspirations, motivations, patterns of behaviour, blind spots and unconscious biases? How do I differ from others?

How can I powerfully influence others using my signature leadership style?

Why is it useful to have a range of approaches (analytical, cognitive and emotional) to leadership, communication, decision-making and problem- solving? How do I know when to deploy them?

What are the practical tools to manage ethical dilemmas, personal integrity and ensuring that policy leads from a foundation of understanding values?

How can I manage my reputation, as well as my health and relationships?

How can I be effective in multiple roles over my career? How can I build my capacity in ‘the art of governing’?

What can I learn from the passage of previous contentious policy and legislation? How do I access, filter, analyse and evaluate information from a range of sources in my time-constrained world?

What is the role of innovation, risk, continual learning and adaptive leadership? How do I build my own capabilities and encourage and enable them in others? What tools and models can I use to explore collaboration for influence and impact?

What is the role of collaboration, engaging people with different points of view, stakeholder management and negotiations? How can I master all of them?

Follow-up engagement - Coaching calls and six-month check-inEarly December, details TBCExperience in previous courses and feedback from participants demonstrates that the most effective way to embed learning and hold people accountable to the decisions they make during the course is to have a planned check-in, six months after the course.

Our program facilitators (Ralph Ashton and Malcolm Doig) will also offer each participant one coaching call per month in between the program dates (June 6-8) and the follow-up event in December as a way to provide participants with on-going support and space for reflection.

If you require accommodation for the program we have a limited number of studios in UWA’s new Forrest Hall on hold for $120/ night, however, these are only temporary holds, so please let us know as soon as possible if you would like to secure one.

The course is limited to 12 participants. The total cost of the program is $5,000 (plus GST) and covers the Welcome Dinner and membership of the Fellows' Alumni Program. An opportunity exists for Parliamentarians to receive a Patrons' Fellowship for each program, which covers $4,500 of the cost of the two-day program. The Patrons' Fellowships are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.

“The leadership program is essentially about power - not the power to the position we hold, but of us as people to bring about change. I wish a course like this had been available when I was elected to parliament. I am a more powerful and effective representative because of it.”

“I found that I had the confidence to commit to policy direction and pursue it rather than accepting advice from more experienced team members ‘that it could not be done’. Without the catalyst of this course, I’m not sure that would have been possible at this stage of my early political experience.”

REGISTRATION

“There are very few leadership programs directly targeted for MPs. I found this extremely beneficial in enhancing my awareness and guiding me to confidence to be the leader I know I can be and have a positive impact on my state."

“The course is very useful for gaining a better understanding of onself and knowing better how you can lead, use your individual talents and create change."

This innovative and challenging program draws on international best practice from the Harvard Kennedy School in the USA, the Institute for Government in the UK and corporate leadership programs. To create an open learning environment, the program is held under Chatham House Rule and participants are split into party groups for some sessions.
