-P PARKVIEW BAPTIST SCHOOL Education with an Eternal Foundation Dear Parents, We are very proud of the academic growth our students have made this school year. We want to make sure that our students do not lose any of the growth they have experienced this year through continuing to keep their minds active this summer. Researchers identify “summer setback” as the phenomenon of declining academic achievement during summer months. This loss has taken teachers by surprise year after year. Students that do not read over the summer enter the fall at a disadvantage. Recent studies have even shown that one to two books in the summer are not enough to prevent this decline (Kim 2004). Based on these studies, we are requiring our students to read several books over the summer months. Summer reading is essential to all students’ yearly academic success. Research also shows that giving students free choice over the books they read increases their motivation and enjoyment. We want our students to enjoy what they are reading, so we are giving them some flexibility in what they read this summer. We would also like to reinforce the math skills our students were taught throughout the school year with our summer math packet. Additionally, when a child knows their basic math facts with automaticity, they are able to complete complex problem solving problems easier. Please encourage your child to review their basic math facts this summer. Moby Max will be available throughout the summer as will Reflex. Students are required to complete the Third Grade Book Chart, Math Chart, and Summer Math Packet. These assignments are due by Friday, August 17th and will count as the first reading and math grades. Please detach this bottom portion and return to your teacher by Friday, May 18th I am aware of the summer reading and math requirements for my child.
