Compliance Energy didn’t get any coal for Christmas. Stephen Ellis, Compliance’s CEO, said the company will not make

its latest self-imposed deadline of Dec. 31 to get an application sub-mitted to the B.C. Environmental Assessment O ce (EAO) to open a controversial coal mine less than 50 kilometres from downtown Qua-licum Beach.

Asked when people can expect an application to be submitted, Ellis told e NEWS “early next year.”

In May of 2013, the EAO rejected the company’s application for the proposed Raven Coal mine saying “the application does not contain the required information and (the EAO) has decided not to accept the application for detailed review.” Since the rejection Compliance o -cials periodically vow to re-submit another application, however, the company has repeatedly missed all of their self-imposed deadlines — including the most recent one. Once an application is submitted, the EAO will evaluate it within 30 days to determine whether or not it meets the criteria set out in the application information requirements.

If the EAO determines that the application meets the requirements, it will be accepted for review. e 180-day review will be initiated and a public comment period on the application will be scheduled.

On its website (www.theravenproject.ca), Compliance says it ex-pects to hire up to 200 workers during construction and create up to 350 full-time jobs. e underground operation would be centred about ve kilometres west of the Buckley Bay ferry terminal and the coal would be stored and shipped out of Port Alberni.

Compliance has said three trucks an hour, 24 hours a day, will carry the coal from the mine to Port Alberni.

John Snyder, president of Coal Watch, a group dedicated to re-searching issues regarding the proposed Raven Coal mine, says he’s not sure Compliance will be able to “pull the rabbit out of the hat.”

Snyder said “I can’t remember all the deadlines they (Compliance) have set for themselves and failed to meet.”

CANADA DAY IN PARKSVILLE

Want to lead a big party?JOHN [email protected]

It’s one of the largest Canada Day celebra-tions anywhere in the province and it needs new leadership.

Canada Day, from the parade through the fireworks, attracts more than 10,000 people to downtown Parksville and Community Park ev-ery year. In recent years, the park and beach events have been organized by the Rotary Club of Parksville’s PM group. That service club vot-ed this year not to take on the organization of the 2015 festivities.

“The club took a vote are are choosing not to participate this year,” said club member Bonnie Wallis, the chair of the 2014 event. “But there are members who are willing to fill key volun-teer positions.”

Wallis said she would be willing to continue as the event’s chair, but Canada Day needs an um-brella organization, perhaps a non-profit society, to come forward. “It’s now an event that has to take place but has no foundation,” said Wallis.

Canada Day has made money for Rotary in recent years, money it has given back to

community groups. Sponsorships, grants and agreements with food vendors bring in money, while the big expenses usually relate to enter-tainment and insurance.

The event has changed hands, from an orga-nizational perspective, over the years. It used to be run by the Parksville and District Cham-ber of Commerce before Rotary took over a few years ago.

“When the chamber had to give it up it had a place to land with Rotary,” said Wallis. “But right now it doesn’t have a place to land and there’s concern over that.”

Wallis also said she believes the parade is in good hands and will proceed as usual in down-town Parksville on Canada Day. As for the rest of the festivities, the lead organizers are willing and available if an umbrella group could step for-ward. Wallis said history shows the event can be a money-maker for an non-profit organization.

“It does have the potential to hold its own and leave a reserve for the following year,” she said.

If your group would like to get involved, or you would like more information, call Wallis at 250-586-1934 or e-mail: [email protected].

Local residents will soon enjoy improved access to recreation pro-grams as a result of a new License to Occupy agreement between the Regional District of Nanaimo and School District 69, according to a news release issued by both taxpayer-funded organizations.  The five-year agreement signed on Dec. 18 allows the RDN to lease class-room space at the former Qualicum Beach Elementary School. The RDN will start offering recreation programs at the former school ear-ly in the New Year, and will launch a full inventory of programs for the spring/summer recreation session.

“The RDN’s recreation team is excited to be part of this new commu-nity gathering place at the former Qualicum Beach Elementary School,” said RDN Chair Joe Stanhope.  “Having access to this dedicated pro-gram space will allow the RDN to work with key community partners to provide a wider variety of recreation programs in District 69.”

The former school is emerging as a community hub, with a num-ber of community partners now operating in the facility. The school closed in June of 2014 and discussions around its future use began almost immediately. — NEWS Staff/RDN/SD69

Editor’s note: our staff has spent some time looking back at 2014 and we are pleased to present highlights from The NEWS in this 2014—Year in Review special. Today, we look at July through September. In our next edition Jan. 2 we feature October through December. Thank-you for all your support this year and best wishes to all for a happy and healthy 2015.

July 1• The regional district has committed

$15,000 to studying the current state of the Parksville Curling Club. This comes at a time when the club is considering its future after losing its 100 per cent tax-ex-empt status from the City of Parksville. The money comes from the Corporate Climate Action Fund and the study will confirm the building’s current level of performance, integrity and life expectan-cy of it’s structures and major operating systems.

• Long time Ballenas Whalers coach Sean Hines, who helped start, and was at the helm, of the football program for more than a decade, is heading home to Oregon after arriving in Parksville 1988.

July 3• Trustee Ross Milligan introduced

a motion at School District 69’s regular board meeting to establish a committee to advise the board on “performance measurements that should be utilized as indicators of academic performance,” considering social/economic factors, es-tablishing targets, a plan of action and re-porting system. He pointed to issues with the accuracy of the provincial foundation skills assessment (FSA) tests, controversy over the Fraser Institute’s annual school rankings and the difficulty of comparing different students across different dis-tricts.

• The B.C. government is raising speed limits around southern B.C., including a new 120 km/h limit on three remote stretches of divided four-lane highway. In all, 35 sections of rural provincial high-way totalling 1,300 km are getting higher speed limits. This includes Highway 19 from Parksville to Campbell River.

July 8• The school district has signed an

agreement with the town and the Society of Organized Services to “explore re-pur-posing options” for Qualicum Beach Ele-mentary School.

“The school district is pleased to an-nounce the signing of an intent agree-ment to explore re-purposing options on the former Qualicum Elementary School site along with District 69 Society of Or-ganized Services and the Town of Qual-icum Beach,” the district said in its news

release. “The parties will work together to promote the development of a commu-nity hub that is recognized and valued as a gathering place for people of all ages and an access point for a wide range of community activities, events, programs and services.”

• Following the sudden death of Quali-cum Beach Chamber of Commerce Chair Paul Walkey, the board of the chamber met on July 2 to determine the group’s leadership structure. Stepping up to take Walkey’s place is Oura Giakoumakis, part-owner of Thalassa Restaurant at the Qualicum Beach Memorial Golf Club. A chamber news release said Giakoumakis comes with a depth of experience at the Qualicum Beach Chamber of Commerce and has agreed to act as “interim” chair until the group’s annual general meeting in November.

July 10• At city council’s meeting Monday

night, Mayor Chris Burger suggested the city send a letter directly to feder-al and provincial ministers, MPs, MLAs and “even the damn prime minister.” The letter would ask for clarification and confirmation on grant money available from senior governments for a new water system, with the expectation it would be the traditional one-third, one-third, one-third formula (municipal, provincial, federal).

• Two members of the RCMP’s Lower Mainland-based bomb squad were flown to this region Tuesday to disable an ex-plosive device in a newspaper tube in the Whiskey Creek-Hilliers are of the Alber-ni Highway. Oceanside RCMP say they received a call Tuesday morning from a resident who heard a bang Monday night but did not investigate.

July 15• Maggie Stewart and Olivia Williams

made it through the districts to the pro-vincials and walked away as provincial champions in the Knights of Columbus Free Throw Competition.

• Arrowsmith Search and Rescue and Oceanside RCMP were joined by police dog services and search and rescue or-ganizations from all over the Island last weekend to find 70-year-old Iain Hollier. On the third day of searching, a resident on Bennet Road found him disoriented but otherwise okay in a remote back cor-ner of their property.

July 17• Parksville Qualicum Beach set record

highs this week, peaking at 32 C Monday, topping the previous record of 30 C set on that date in 1996. Sunday, July 13 also broke a 1996 record of 31 C, boasting a high of 31.5 C.

• Some changes have been made to

the upcoming Qualicum Beach Fire Hall. To reduce costs, a different gear storage system was identified, structural changes were made to utilize the LVL panel sys-tem, a different exhaust system was sub-stituted, outdoor landscaping was scaled back, the fire hose tower was reduced in size slightly and siding was substituted for a more economical option, reported director of planning Luke Sales.

July 22• Compliance Energy CEO Steve Ellis

vowed to re-submit an application for a coal mining operation 50 km north of Qualicum Beach by the end of this year. “We hope to get it (the application) in before the end of the year,” Ellis told The NEWS Friday.

• A resident of Qualicum Beach was just elected President of the Storytellers of Canada - Conteurs du Canada (SC-CC). Marva Blackmore is excited to take on the presidency of this prestigious na-tional storytelling organization.

July 24• At Tuesday night’s Regional District

of Nanaimo meeting, directors voted to contribute the money to the Island Cor-ridor Foundation (ICF) project in the hopes of bringing rail service back to Vancouver Island. The board committed $945,000 to the project representing the RDN’s portion of the $20.9 million re-quired to re-start passenger service that stopped in 2011 due to safety concerns.

• A new Quality Foods in Parksville appears to be getting a lot of support, as

long as they deal with some traffic con-cerns around new school configurations. Due to the closure of Parksville Elemen-tary, Springwood Middle School, just on the other side of the subject property, will become a consolidated elementary school.

July 29• Regional District of Nanaimo direc-

tors took a major step forward in bring-ing the Fairwinds development project to life. Four bylaws were adopted, rep-resenting the final step in ensuring land use regulations are in place before the developer may proceed.

• A controversial seaweed harvest in Deep Bay will continue for at least an-other season. The Ministry of Agriculture announced Friday three licences — one more than last year — have been grant-ed to harvest Mazzaella japonica in the Deep Bay/Bowser area.

July 31• Family physicians are creating af-

ter-hours walk-in clinics in Qualicum Beach in a pilot project for August they say will complement, not compete with, the Oceanside Health Centre.

• Parksville Qualicum Beach is expe-riencing its best season of fishing in the last decade. “We’re expecting to see what people are referring to as ‘a wall of sock-eye,’ French Creek Harbour Store owner Kari Wheatley said. “That means there will be more sockeye here than anyone has ever, or will ever see.”

2014 — YEAR IN REVIEW

July-September: Holme, Burger step down Aug 5• It cost the Town of Qualicum Beach

more than $370,000 to sever ties with two senior staff members in the past 10 months. CAO Mark Brown retired last October at the age of 53 after 33 years of employment with the municipality. He was paid $133,250 in severance pay, $37,351 in accrued vacation and $68,184 in accrued leave, otherwise known as sick leave.

• A 17-year-old Coombs boy died in Victoria General Hospital after being struck on his skateboard by a pick-up truck in the 2100 block of Alberni High-way, Oceanside RCMP confirmed.

Aug 7• A report to Parksville city council

from Oceanside RCMP Staff Sgt. Brian Hunter indicated that incidents of crime are generally either holding at 2013 num-bers or declining.

• Local efforts to support the Rotary

International Youth Exchange program have met with obstacles, and this won-derful year-long program for young peo-ple may no longer continue.

Aug 12• A Qualicum Beach resident says he

was pepper-sprayed and physically as-saulted when a masked man broke into his home early Sunday morning. Chris Rissanen, a 25-year-old who lives on 6th Avenue, is calling the incident a home in-vasion.

• Keith Price’s recent purchase from an Errington dog breeder left him with massive veterinary costs he wants others to avoid. “My dog is a Burnese mountain dog-St. Bernard cross,” Price said. “He just turned seven months old and the vet said he will need a new hip in a year to a year-and-a-half.”

Aug 14• Elections are in the air, and after

29 years in politics, Regional District of

Nanaimo director George Holme has an-nounced he will not seek re-election this fall.

• At Monday’s council meeting, coun-cillors were presented with a number of options from staff regarding Qualicum Beach’s Growth Containment Bound-ary (GCB), after the Regional District of Nanaimo’s board of directors did not approve the town’s request to make a mi-nor amendment to the Regional Growth Strategy.

Aug 19• Chris Burger will not stand for

re-election this fall and he’s endorsing the newest candidate in Parksville’s may-oral race, current city councillor Marc Lefebvre.

• While the recent death of Robin Wil-liams has brought the usual celebrity condolences, there has also been a lot of questioning and soul searching. “The first day there was lots of talk in the industry,

but since then other comedians have been really quiet and self-reflective,” said Damonde Tschritter, a Ballenas Second-ary School grad and one of the country’s most acclaimed comedians.

Aug 21• Members of the Friends Of French

Creek Conservation Society say they are sampling local water to test for radioac-tive elements from the Fukushima nu-clear accident which leaked radioactive isotopes into the Pacific Ocean.

• Wembley Mall will almost double in size when the current redevelopment and expansion is complete, say the own-ers of the Parksville shopping facility.

Aug 26• There are still a number of things in

town that Qualicum Beach Mayor Teunis Westbroek would like to be a part of, and he says that’s one of the reasons he’ll be running again this fall.

COLUMN

Things one never thought one would seeWhenever I feel my spirits corkscrew-

ing downward from despair of human folly (ISIL, Dick Cheney, Edmonton Oil-ers) I stop and think of all the wonderful things I never thought I’d live to see.

I never thought I’d see human foot-prints on the moon.

I never thought I’d see a black man elected to the White House. I never thought I’d hear the CEO of one of the biggest companies in the world stand up and say he was proud to be gay.

That’s what Tim Cook did.  Specifical-ly, he said “Let me be clear: I’m proud to be gay, and I consider being gay among the greatest gifts God has given me”.

Tim Cook is the Chief Executive Of-ficer of Apple. Can you imagine what a statement like that must mean to a trans-gendered kid growing up lonely and be-leaguered in Wichita or Red Deer — or Toronto, come to that?

We’ve come a long way, amigos. I grew up in a time when the world was at best

frosty towards gays. They weren’t even called gay back then. They were called all kinds of names we just don’t say in po-lite society these days. The terms weren’t used with flat-out hate but there was more than a hint of scorn and derision. Gays were the Other.  People who lived in the shadows and spoke a secret language and did God-knows-what with each other.

I spent several years in a Canadian city where the only gay hangout (a cafe on a downtown backstreet) was trashed one Saturday night by a beer-fuelled bunch of Good Old Boys.  They swarmed the place with hockey sticks, smashed the windows and threw paint on the walls. (It was after hours and no one was there).  I don’t re-call anyone being outraged or marching on city hall. “Oh well,” I heard one guy

say, “It was just a (insert derisive word here) joint.”

To go from that era to this in the span of a lifetime — that’s pretty amazing.  And

I haven’t even got to talking about K6G.

That’s a section of the Los Angeles County Men’s Jail. The gay section, to be spe-cific. Every inmate in K6G is gay.  There is nothing like it in all of America’s vast industri-al prison complex.

It was created back in 1985 to protect gay prisoners who faced a disproportion-ate amount of violence from

‘straight’ inmates. What’s really amazing is how well it works. There is an over-whelming sense of community among the inmates of the ‘gay wing’. They look after each other.  They care. One inmate explained, “For some people, this is their home because a lot of families have dis-

owned them and shunned them, so we’re their family.”

The irony is that K6G (through the ef-forts of the inmates, not the staff) does all the things for prisoners that the rest of the prison system so miserably fails to do.  It rehabilitates them, gives them a sense of belonging, and provides a framework for dealing with the outside world. It is a step forward for civilized behaviour in general.

Too bad people have to go to prison to experience it.

Ah well...two steps forward, one step back is still a net gain. Meanwhile the CEO of one of the largest companies in the world announces he is proud to be gay and it causes barely a ripple in Apple in the notoriously macho stock market.

Regular readers of this space know we are consistently trying to help local politi-cians with the di cult tasks they face.

Truth be told, we doubt they see it as helpful.

Undeterred, we soldier on today with what we be-lieve should be New Year’s resolutions for the good people who decide how our tax dollars are spent.

John Duncan should resolve to introduce himself to the people of Parksville Qualicum Beach. Right now, the federal Conservative candidate has little or no pro le here, and he wants our votes come federal election time in 2015. All most people around here know of Duncan is it’s a town with a big hockey stick on the way to Victoria.

MLA Michelle Stilwell should resolve to be, well, Michelle Stilwell. We can excuse her for consistently delivering the B.C. Liberal message verbatim, seeing as it was her rst year in o ce. But the good people of Parksville Qualicum Beach didn’t elect Premier Christy Clark or the caucus communications sta , they elected Stilwell.

e Regional District of Nanaimo’s board of direc-tors should resolve to stay out of Parksville and Qual-icum Beach’s internal business. And it should resolve to get more detailed information about exactly what is happening with the million bucks of taxpayers money it gave the Island Corridor Foundation.

e City of Parksville should resolve to be more exible in regards to the size and cost of the new wa-ter treatment plant. Either that or get tougher with the unelected ponti cators who call themselves (this week, anyway) Island Health.

Qualicum Beach town council should resolve to actually make some decisions in 2015, especially in relation to the Waterfront Master Plan, which needs to include business opportunities on or near the beach. While they were elected in large part because they promised more consultation with the public, we don’t believe anyone elected these councillors to do nothing but hold meetings.

We at e NEWS resolve to continue our watchdog role over your tax dollar, and to call it as we see it. Ar-en’t we helpful?

We wish all of our valued readers and advertisers a safe, happy and healthy 2015.

TYPICAL SMALL TOWNSmall towns — gotta love them. I read

in the Dec. 18 edition of The NEWS that the PDBA and the Craig Street Merchants were forgoing Christmas cheer and warm fuzzy feelings for political power politics this year. The city has opted to look the other way and pretend all is well in Whoville too.

As a fairly recent addition to the local population (two-plus years), I’m amazed at how well small town attitudes work against the very ideas its citizens think they want to foster.

Craig Street vendors are pretty clear that doing some basic beautifying of the area will improve business and pedestrian traffic. The Parksville Downtown Business Association says it doesn’t provide funds for that sort of project, and the City of Parksville says the two groups should fight it out and make their own decisions. And so it goes round and round while nothing of any value gets done.

What gets lost in all this bickering is that Parksville is a nondescript little clutch of buildings on a secondary highway on an is-land that attracts a huge number of tourists each year, mainly due to the fabulous beach they’re blessed to have on their front door-step. We’ve been relying for decades on the beach to attract business, instead of actively working to make the town itself a primary destination.

I can think of several towns that have had the foresight and the political savvy to spruce up their shopping areas with results that were nothing short of amazing. Consider places like Port Moody and West Vancouver or Ladysmith. They’re relatively small towns with a busy through road for a main street. They have vibrant shopping, restaurants and more importantly, look well maintained and attractive. They make you want to stop and have a look around. They did it with vision

and integrated planning and a sense of pur-pose.   They didn’t spend their time squab-bling about who does what and they didn’t sing the “It’s not my responsibility” song. They got together to look at the bigger picture and the results were wonderful.

Parksville is ripe for some thoughtful and visionary planning. Are we forever going to condemn ourselves to petty bickering about pennies while the Brinks truck rolls on to somewhere more receptive? Craig Street could be vibrant and a lot more attractive than it is presently.  It has a great summer market and a distinct feel of its own. It’s right next to the beach we’re so dependent upon, so what’s wrong with starting there?

We have the power to position the town itself as a ‘must see’ destination on this beau-tiful island. Wake up everyone — we have the chance to effect real change and better times for our business community and our resi-dents. What are we waiting for?

CALLING FOR MORE TRANSPARENCY

Re: Dec. 16 letter to the editor by Ross Walton about the proposed medical mari-juana plant in Deep Bay.

I was very interested to read the letter from Walton regarding his trip to see the Tilray medical marijuana plant in the in-dustrial area of Duke Point. He points out it is a 5,300 square foot plant located at the remote Biggs Industrial Park, away from any residential areas, surrounded by 10-foot high chain link fence topped off with multiple strands of barbed wire, etc., with security guards and cameras. This does not sound as though it is the kind of industrial plant that would be suitable in rural resi-dential Deep Bay/Bowser.

I live two minutes from the proposed in-dustrial marijuana site in Deep Bay situated at the busy intersection of Gainsberg Road and Highway 19A. Its boundary borders res-idential homes on Thompson Clark Drive and is in extremely close proximity to Bowser Elementary School on Faye Road in Bowser. As Walton mentioned, the residents of Deep Bay/Bowser have heard numerous rumours during 2013/14 regarding this application, but were not officially notified by Area H di-rector Bill Veenhof until September, 2014 — only after a report by The NEWS.

It would be expected that a director in-form residents of any proposed project that comes to the attention of the RDN board so folks can be advised of the facts. I believe Veenhof knew about this application in De-cember 2013 and did nothing, said nothing, until almost a whole year later.

Veenhof prides himself on “being trans-parent” in his intermittent e-mail “update” reports to residents. To myself and to other folks who live here, this is not being transpar-ent. This is being secretive. It would appear he wants to get this proposal through with-out any opposition.

I would like to see a town hall-style meet-ing to find out how residents really feel about the matter, instead of Veenhof stating in his e-mail update that most residents are in sup-port of the idea, which is presumptuous to say the least.

It’s time for Veenhof to become a facil-itator for public discussions on this issue. Without public discussions, we can’t expect “transparency” from Veenhof in the future. Continued secrecy for the next four years can do considerable damage to this community. What other information is being withheld from residents?

QUALICUM BEACH ARTIST AT YQQ

Showcasing what the Island has to offerPhotoshop isn’t always bad, says this computer-savvy photographer

JESSICA [email protected]

To create the three-piece Pacific Rim panorama now hanging in the Comox Valley Airport, Qualicum Beach photographer Brian Argyle asked his computer for a lit-tle help.

“Just because that’s the way your camera did it doesn’t mean that’s the way it’s supposed to be,” he said. “The image that comes out of your camera is already photoshopped to an extent.”

The three sections depicting Wickaninnish Inn are actually 15 different photos — five distinct images at three different exposures. Argyle, who enjoys “the work on the computer afterwards” then stitched the photos together using Photoshop.

Still, the photographer also said that being subtle with his editing was key to getting a good-looking im-age. “It’s easy to go overboard with the computer,” he said.

Argyle, however, has many years of experience with

digital photography. After a few decades of using film, he began using a digital camera in 1993. Argyle said he made the switch initially so he could take photos for a website he was developing. Also, with his background in computer programming and IT, Argyle said the idea of being able to put photos on the computer “worked” for him.

According to a news release, Argyle’s work is part of the Comox Valley Airport Art and Culture Program, an annual partnership between YQQ and the Comox Valley Community Arts Council. This year, there are 23 pieces of photography, sculpture, painting and textiles from 19 Island artists exploring the exhibit’s title theme Wanderlust Vancouver Island.

“The Comox Valley Art and Culture Program exhi-bition provides a passenger with a very strong sense of place upon arriving to Vancouver Island,” said YQQ CEO, Fred Bigelow, in the release.

“They wanted pictures from Parksville north,” ex-plained Argyle. “That represents the area served by the airport.”

While Argyle said he’ll take photos of “whatever ap-peals” to him at the time, he also said landscapes like the one hanging in YQQ are a common subject in his portfolio.

This is his third year with images on display at the airport. This year’s exhibit is open until May 1, 2015.

Alan Jossul, left, and Blaine Dunaway make up the duo String Theory, and they’ll make their strings sing at the McMillan Arts Center on Jan. 30. Jossul, whose performance history spans two decades, has many musical style influ-ences in genres from classical music to heavy-metal. As a recording art-ist, Dunaway has performed jazz to classical, folk, world music, blues and pop. They both also have post-secondary edu-cation in music.

In physics, string theory is the study of what the world is made of and why we are here. In music, however, String Theory, is the combina-tion of Alan Jossul on guitar and Blaine Dun-away on violin.

The duo will play at the McMillan Arts Cen-ter on Jan. 30.

Born and raised in the Comox Valley, Alan Jossul has been playing and teaching guitar for most of his life. He has a performance history (solo and collaborative) spanning 20 years, in-cluding various appearances at Vancouver Is-land Musicfest and Sunshine Festival in Pow-ell River. His musical style influences abound, covering a full gamut of genres from classical music to heavy-metal.  He has also picked at the banjo, bass and a few other instruments and managed to make a few of these stringed things sing.

After years of developing his fingerstyle technique, he enrolled in   Vancouver Is-land University’s Jazz Performance Program to broaden his horizons.

When he isn’t teaching or out with his dog, he is generally on a stage performing or in an audience appreciating and keeping the art of live performance alive and kicking.

Blaine Dunaway is a performer, teacher, composer and conductor. He also has a B.A. in music (jazz) from Western Washington Univer-sity. Blaine has taught music in public schools throughout B.C. and Manitoba and has taught at the college level in B.C. and Alberta.

As a composer, his compositions range from String Quartets to 15-piece bands to meditation tracks. Blaine has worked as a studio recording artist in many studios across the country. As an improvising violinist and trumpet player, there are dozens of albums with his touch adding to the magic in many different genres, from jazz to classical, folk, world music, blues and pop.

Dunaway has also played in most of the fin-est big bands in Western Canada. He has per-formed with jazz orchestras including Hugh Fraser’s Vancouver Ensemble of Jazz Improvi-sation, Tommy Banks’ Orchestra, Gary Guth-man Orchestra and in the Royal Canadian En-gineers Band.

Showcasing the other end of his musi-cal ability, Blaine has been a member of the Pro Musica Orchestra, New West Symphony, Okanagan Symphony, Sooke Philharmonic and the Victoria Civic Orchestra. He was also Concert Master with the Vancouver Philhar-monic Orchestra.

He now lives in Courtney, BC.Come watch these musicians make their

strings sing Friday Jan. 30 at 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6:30 p.m.

Tickets are $15 for general admission and $12 for OCAC members. For more informa-tion, contact [email protected] or 250-248-8185.

The parents of the Oceanside Bantam Generals have organized a New Year’s Eve Dance at the Parksville Community & Conference Centre and they have got Nanaimo-band Johnny Inappropriate to play the gig.

“We were able to snatch them up,” said one of the or-ganizers, Elaine Shworan. “They’re a popular band.”

According to Johnny Inappropriate’s bass player / manager Aaron Curry, the band played at Tigh-Na-Mara Seaside Spa Resort & Conference Centre last New Year’s Eve. They also regularly play at corporate special events and weddings.

“We’re a high-energy five-piece cover band,” said he said. “We play anything that’ll get you out of your seat dancing.”

Shworan said this year’s dance at the PCCC is a fund-raiser for the Oceanside Bantam Generals, who are go-ing to play a tournament in Portland, Oregon, Jan. 16-19.

“They’re really looking forward to it,” she said. “It’s a pretty big deal.”

Aside from music, the night will include a raffle. Shworan said prizes include Canucks tickets, a snow-board with bindings, a stand-up paddle board donated by family and friends of the team members.

To mark midnight, party favours, hats and noisemak-ers will be given out before the 10 second countdown. Champagne will also be available for sale.

There will also be a cash bar at the event, and two food trucks will be parked outside.

Shworan said that organizers are working on a cou-ple of leads for a safe-ride program for the event, but as of right now party-goers will have to plan ahead or take taxis.

Doors at 8:30 p.m., music starts at 9 p.m. until 1 a.m. Tickets are $30 and are available at Wilde & Sparrow, Shades of Green, the PCCC or vanisleevents.ca

For more info on the event, call 250-240-0891.

2014 — YEAR IN REVIEW

July-September: pot and politics Aug 26• David Jones came in with verbal guns

a blazin’ talking about how he was going to create change in the industry with his no-tipping model at his Smoke ‘N Water restaurant at Pacific Shores Resort in Na-noose Bay. Less than three months from opening, Jones has scrapped the no-tip-ping scheme.

Aug 28• With little sign of progress in the pro-

vincial labour situation, emotions were running high at the first School District 69 board meeting of the school year on Tuesday night. “We recognize we’re in the midst of what is a dispute between the provincial parties,” District 69 super-intendent Rollie Koop told the board.

• Results are being released from a recent phone survey of Qualicum Beach residents that claim 67 per cent of re-spondents agree the proposed Pheasant Glen Resort development will be good for the community.

Sept. 2• River’s Edge residents reacted swiftly

to news a medical marijuana production company wants to set up shop near their homes in Nanoose Bay. A neighbour-hood gathering about the issue is sched-uled for tonight (Tuesday) at 7 p.m. at the corner of Kaye Road and Rascal Lane.

• Parksville Beach may be officially deemed paradise if it wins a nation-wide contest seeking the greatest place in Can-ada. The sandy, expansive beach has re-cently been nominated for the Canadian Institute of Planners’ awards.

Sept. 4• Noise from a so-called rave in Bows-

er over the long weekend has drawn neg-ative attention from a nearby neighbour who said the party kept her up “all night, all weekend.”

• An Errington couple isn’t wasting a drop of water this year. Tim and Mariah Wilde, who moved to the area in March, have set up a rainwater harvesting sys-tem on their property that regional dis-trict officials are calling “exemplary.”

Sept. 9• While the provincial teachers’ strike

heads into the second week of the new school year, some local students are voic-ing their opinion. About 15 students held a rally last Thursday at Kwalikum Sec-ondary, the scheduled first day of class in District 69.

• About 70 people and their dogs turned out for the SPCA Paws for a Cause walk at the Parksville Community Park.

Sept. 11• The last undecided incumbent in the

Regional District of Nanaimo made up his mind Tuesday morning, bringing the total to three. RDN director Bill Veenhof, who represents Deep Bay and Bowser, confirmed he will run for re-election this fall.

• The City of Parksville awarded the Temple Street contract to Locar Indus-tries Ltd. to construct municipal infra-structure upgrades between Phillips Street and Chinook Avenue.

Sept. 16• People are the least satisfied with

transit among public services, according to the latest Regional District of Nanaimo poll. However, the same poll also indi-cates transit is the service most people want to see expanded.

• Regional district directors voted for a raise in remuneration. The decision comes after recommendations from the RDN’s remuneration committee were sent back to staff for revision by board members.

Sept.18• A Vancouver Island father and son

are looking to build a medical mari-juana facility in Deep Bay. Lantzville’s

Keith Reid and his son Sean, who lives in Parksville, submitted an application to Health Canada late last year to become licensed pot producers.

• Fourteen people from Parksville Qualicum Beach headed south to make the world a more livable place for at least one family in Vicente Guererro, a small Mexican village. They will build a 500 square foot home in just over one week for a family of four in-need.

Sept. 23• With an 86 per cent vote in favour

of the deal worked out between the province and B.C. Teachers’ Federation, school is back in session in District 69.

• Carrie Powell-Davidson is looking to go national. The Parksville city coun-cillor confirmed she will seek the feder-al Liberal Party nomination this fall. “It’s all in preliminary stages,” she said in a phone interview from Vancouver.

Last year, federal boundaries were re-drawn moving Parksville Qualicum Beach into a different riding. The new Courtenay-Alberni riding incorporates Courtenay, Baynes Sound, Denman and Hornby Islands, Cumberland, Port Al-berni, Qualicum Beach, Parksville, Tofi-no and Ucluelet.

Sept. 25• The chief thought it was important

enough to post on a Facebook page, tell-ing people there was going to be no one staffing the ambulance station in Qual-icum Beach for eight hours starting at 6 p.m. that night.

“FYI, no staffed ambulance in Qual-icum Beach from 2200-0600 tonight,” Dashwood Volunteer Fire Department Chief Nick Acciavatti wrote on a local chat group’s Facebook page. “Ambulance may come from Qualicum Bay or Parks-ville....if they are not out on other calls. If they are all away then one may be a ways away.”

Accaviatti confirmed this week the post was his and his assistant confirmed the lack of coverage happens in what’s often referred to as the town with the old-est population in Canada.

• Community policing volunteers teamed up with ICBC and Oceanside RCMP to curb distracted driving. On Sept. 18, a joint operation was set up on Highway 19A near Resort Drive where volunteers used a speed board while also counting distracted drivers. Speedwatch and the COPS volunteers counted 1,757 vehicles that passed  in the north and southbound lanes  from 9 a.m. to 10.30 a.m. Oceanside RCMP Cpl. Jesse Fore-man said despite the fact that the volun-teers were “very visible” 30 people were openly talking on their cell phones.

Sept. 30• School District 69 Superintendent

Rollie Koop said the provincial govern-ment’s instruction Friday that districts return any money saved during the teachers’ strike is not a surprise. He said the local districts were allowed to keep 20 per cent of any savings in May and June, but it was understood that the money saved in September would go towards covering the $40 a day promised to par-ents of students under age 13.

“We feel some expenses we incurred relate to the strike, it would be nice to have some recognition of that,” he said, but they will figure out what it did cost and review their budget.

• Local efforts to boost Parksville’s sta-tus as a great place to do business have won the city a key provincial award: the province’s 2014 Open for Business Award. “This is fantastic news for Parksville, and a tribute to our city’s excellent leadership in creating a business-friendly commu-nity,” said Parksville & District Chamber of Commerce president Robynne Shaw.

Bernie was an avid lover of sports, acting on many committees throughout Manitoba and coaching minor hockey and baseball in the various towns where he was posted. He was never happier than with his family and friends, playing hockey or baseball and was an active player until his late 70’s. As a result of hearing loss, Bernie became involved with the Canadian Hard of Hearing and served on both the provincial and national board.

A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. The family are very grateful for the excellent care and kindness shown to Bernie at the Heartland Seniors  Residence,  Father Lacombe Home, Calgary EMTs and paramedics as well as the physicians and staff at RVH.

If friends so desire, donations may be made to the charity of their choice. Arrangements in the care of

QUALICUM BEACH MAN PLAYING COLLEGE HOOPS IN SQUAMISH

Hoping for the nationals in his last yearJustin Tryon enjoys battling against the VIU MarinersT YSON [email protected]

Now in his fourth season at Quest University in Squamish, Justin Tryon has seen his team go from losing all 18 games in a season to being in contention for a spot at Nationals.

Tryon, who hails from Qualicum Beach, is in his senior year and his team, the Quest Kermodes, hasn’t been in the PACWEST league all that long. During his first year with the team, they would lose 18 games and finish 0-18. Fast forward three years later and Quest currently sits second in the PACWEST at 6-1, one game behind the VIU Mariners.

“This is a team that’s come a long way,” Tryon said. “Being here when we lost all our games that first season and then won just one game the next year, that was tough. But we’ve gone on to win back-to-back bronze medals at the Provincials, which speaks volumes to the turnaround we had as a team. We’re hop-ing to make it Gold this year though and I think we have the team to do that.”

Returning home for his winter break, Tryon has been keeping loose, visiting friends and family and taking part in the annual KSS Alumni Basketball Tourna-ment, where he gets to be reunited with old teammates over the two day span.

“It’s always nice to come back home, real nice,” Tryon said. “At first, going away to school at Quest was great because I wanted to get off the Island. But now, as I

get a little older, I have more of an appre-ciation for this place. So the return visits are always nice.”

Quest features a program that sees all of it’s students graduating with a Bachelors Degree in Arts & Science. It’s something that Tryon has gotten used to and has built his courses during his time there towards a potential future in busi-ness.

“That’s what I’d like to do, something with business,” Tryon said. “It’s a differ-ent learning experience because Quest is nothing like other Universities. You have the block system here, which gives you a month to focus on one course. “

Being that it’s his last season and year at Quest, Tryon hopes to see things end well on the hardwood for him-self and the Kermodes. Last year, Quest hosted the National champion-ship tournament, which the host team was a part

of. Though they didn’t win a medal, the learning experience was enough to find out what it takes to get there and come away with a medal.

“We’ve got a solid team this year,” Tryon said. “I think that we have the po-tential to make Nationals again this year and make some noise. We beat Langara before the Christmas break and they won the whole thing last year, so that just goes to show where we are as a team. With VIU sitting in front of us, it’s going to be a big test when we play against them but it’s also going to tell us where we stand as a team. We’ve come a long way in the time I’ve been here but we’ve still got that last little bit to go, and that’s gold at the na-tionals.”

Justin Tryon was back at home in Qualicum Beach for his winter break from Quest University. The fourth-year athlete and his Quest Kermodes currently sit second in the PACWEST and are making a run to medal in the provincials for the third straight year and qualify for the nationals.

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Speeding to the NCAAs in the pool at SFUMaran Kokoszka’s favourite event is the 200M backstrokeT YSON [email protected]

In just her first year at Simon Fraser University, Maran Koko-szka is fitting right in with her team in the pool like she was still at home, swimming at the Ravensong Aquatic Center.

Kokoszka, an 18 year old from Qualicum Beach, has

made the transition rather eas-ily, balancing a workload that splits her time between the classroom and the swim team.

“I just got home from my first semester, it’s been good,” Koko-szka said. “I’m in a strength and conditioning program, which has helped me out pretty good. It’s nice because the coaches and teammates are all very pos-itive and motivating.”

A member of the relay team, Kokoszka is also competing in individual events, which

include the 100 and 200 me-ter in the backstroke and free-style events. Her relay team, the 4 x 200 freestyle event, has achieved a “B” standing, which is good enough to make it to the NCAA portion of competition.

“The team has been great, really great,” she said. “We’ve swam great at all of our events and getting our times up to compete at the NCAA level is our goal. We’ve reached the B standard, which is good for us and we’re hoping to maintain

that mark.” While keeping up her grades

in the classroom, which she said “is going really well so far”, Kokoszka hopes to reach the “B” standard in her favourite event, the 200 meter backstroke.

“That’s my favourite event, the 200 backstroke,” she said. “It’s a love hate relationship, you don’t really like it when you’re practicing it but it’s the outcome that you work to-wards, that is the part I love the most.”

TYSON TAYLOR PHOTO

Maran Kokoszka is off to a good start in her first year at Simon Fraser University.

Local man rockets up world tennis rankingsT YSON [email protected]

After having a great 2013 tennis season, Gordon Verge is coming off an even better 2014 season, one that sees him ranked higher than he could have imagined in the masters (80-plus) tennis world.

At the age of 80, Gordon Verge is still going strong, and getting better. The 2014 tennis season for Verge has been a good one, to say the least. In July of this year, Verge was ranked No. 46 in sin-

gles competition and No. 37 in doubles in the world by the Inter-national Tennis Federation (ITF).

As of this month, Parksville’s Verge now sits at No. 25 in the world in singles and No. 11 in doubles. Quite an accomplish-ment considering, back in 2005, he was ranked No. 466 in the world in singles competition.

“It’s been quite a journey,” Verge said of his success this year. “People laugh every time I make the comparison to be-ing like a fine wine, but fun-

ny enough it’s becoming true. Looking back to where I started in 2005 with the ranking to now, it’s remarkable. It’s one of those things where, you look at it and say; maybe I can crack the top 400, then 350. I’ve reached 25 in the world, so who knows what comes next.”

Ranked No. 1 in B.C and by Tennis Canada in both the sin-gles and doubles, Verge will be able to enjoy some relaxation over the winter after an excellent season of tennis, his best to date.

With appearances in the pro-vincial (first place) and nation-al finals (second place), Verge earned a spot on Team Cana-da’s roster, as both a singles and doubles player, for the World Championships; which were held in Turkey this past October.

“I’ve been amazed at how things have gone,” Verge said. “Being able to enjoy this game and having fun with it, it’s been great. I don’t give too much thought to the trophies or things like that, I just enjoy playing the

game and staying in shape.” Verge, who moved to the area

back in 1991, has been enjoying his retirement here after living in Thunder Bay, Ontario. The game of tennis has been a joy, whether it’s coaching or playing the game. Verge has been coach of the tennis program at Balle-nas Secondary School and gives lessons to anyone looking to pick up the game. He also holds a training session at the courts in Bowser every year as well.

... and skills, to ensure you have a worry-free vacation. Through our contacts with suppliers, we are able to book quickly and ef ciently. You are not wasting your valuable time searching the internet.

... we spend hundreds of hours updating our knowledge, and gaining information about new product. We take Webinairs via the computer, and telephone, attend training sessions, and participate in Familiarization trips to countries all over the world, so we gain knowledge and more information about these places, their customs, and what is available to the traveller.

... thus potentially saving you thousands of dollars of out-of-pocket expenses, should you require assistance.
