Help us Plan for the Future of Parks and Recreation! The City of Maplewood seeks your thoughts on its Parks and Recreation System. The City is mid-way through the process of developing a plan that will guide investments over the next 20 years to parks, recreation facilities, trails, preserves, public art, and cultural and historic resources. The plan will assure that the system will meet community needs now and into the future.

What have we heard so far?• Walking, hiking, and biking trails are the most used amenity (86%)• After trails, neighborhood parks are most important (61%)• Creating a destination park with city-wide amenities is the most important major addition to the system.• Improvements to existing parks, preserves, and trails are a high priority for residents• There is a need to renovate older parks, including replacing older facilities, adding amenities, improving accessibility.

How can you participate?Join us at one of our open houses to provide input on the draft plan and identify priorities.

FALL SWIM REGISTRATION GOING ON NOW!In the land of 10,000 lakes learning how to swim is especially important! Which is why, here at the Maplewood Community Center, we are celebrating 20 years of providing high quality community swim lessons at a fraction of the price of private organizations. Our goal is to teach children that water is not something to be feared, but rather respected. By giving them the skills they need to enjoy water safely and helping them to understand their limits, we’ll teach your children to swim, splash, and play in a safe way.

Our environment is another one of our keys to success. Our fun and interactive zero-depth leisure pool provides the perfect water environment for beginning swimmers. Kept at a comfortable temperature of 86-degrees and with a maximum depth of just four-feet, our versatile leisure pool allows instructors to safely challenge beginning swimmers. Take advantage of our experience today and register for one of our more than 100 class offerings.

Written by John Patrick Shanley, author of Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winner Doubt and Academy Award winner Moonstruck, OUTSIDE MULLINGAR is a roman-tic comedy about Anthony and Rosemary, neighbors in rural Ireland, who are nearing their middle years. It is by turns poetic, uplifting, dark and funny. Anthony is an introverted farmer and Rosemary is the woman that vows to have him at all costs. make ends meet, she looks up an old flame—now a successful doctor—and risks everything in the hope he’ll help her make a fresh start. his lines anymore. After the loss of their director, the program committee decides to look for another script. Not realizing it’s a ballet, they plan a production of the Nutcracker. Before they know it the show is sold out, and they’re committed to produc-ing some form of the Nutcracker - complete with ballet! Think of it as a Charlie Brown Christmas for 70 year olds. Space is limited to 10. We will leave the MCC at 11:15AM. Cost is $50.00 (*includes transportation, buffet lunch, tax, gratuity and theatre ticket).

before the hitchings, they can’t find anyone who will pay for the wedding. And who is getting married to whom? The answer will surprise, shock, and tickle Don’t Hug Me audiences. Will any-one get cold feet? Would someone try to derail the wedding? What could possibly go wrong? A lot. Rest assured, nothing will go as wedding-planned in Bunyan Bay. If you are curious about the natural world around us, you’ll love being a Minnesota Master Naturalist Volunteer. These volunteers are a motivated group of fun and interesting people: teachers, retired professionals, hunters and… YOU!

Christa Rittberg, nature center volunteer and board member of The Friends of Maplewood Na-ture says this about her Master Naturalist activities: “What I have found as a master naturalist is …….that it opened up and exposed me to an incredible community of nature lovers and learners. I have had so many excellent opportunities to increase my knowledge of the natural

world, and because of that knowledge, feel even more driven to be a better steward of the earth. I have made new friends and joined groups of people with similar interests and as a result, expanded my interest and enjoyment of the outdoors even more. It really has been an enriching experience.”
