By the third week of classes, traffic and parking patterns settle down. Permit enforcement begins on the first day of class every semester It’s best to buy your permit online before classes start. If you have no permit on the first day of class: • plan to pay to park in a Visitor deck or metered lot. You will not be allowed to park in main decks and lots, • or purchase a daily temporary permit from the Parking and Transportation Services for $6 per day. Expect decks and lots closest to the center of campus to fill quickly. Most classes are scheduled from about 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, Monday – ursday. Peak parking demand occurs during that time. Everyone wants to park as close as they can to main classroom buildings so com- petition for close-in parking is stiff. Parking areas that fill up earliest are: • East Deck II • Union Deck • Lot 18 (beside Union Deck • Lot 19 (in front of Union Deck) • West Deck • Lot 7 (between Cone Deck and Belk Gym) Trying to park close to academic buildings does not necessarily save time Average time to find a central-campus parking space during peak use periods: • East Deck II and Union Deck, 35 minutes • West Deck and Lot 7, 45 minutes Average time to get to center campus from outlying parking: • Shuttle from Lot 6 to campus center: 15 minutes (based on maximum bus run-time wait). Average walk time: 10 minutes. • Shuttle from North Deck to campus center: 20 minutes (based on maximum bus run-time wait). Average walk time: 10 minutes. • Shuttle from South Village Deck to campus center: 20 minutes (based on maximum bus run-time wait). Average walk time: 10 minutes. UNC Charlotte has sufficient parking at all times. ere are always more than 2,000 parking spaces available away from center-campus, even during peak-use hours. Have a plan in mind for an alternate parking area if your first choice is full. • Do a dry run. Park at a lesser-used parking deck or lot (like North Deck, South Village Deck or Lot 6) and locate the nearest shuttle stop. en you’ll know exactly where to park and where to catch the bus if you don’t wish to walk. • ere’s NO REASON to park illegally in a full lot or deck and risk getting a citation • ere’s NO REASON to drive around a deck until you are late for class. DISABILITY PARKING H Both a UNCC parking permit and disability placard are required in ADA spaces in all decks and lots. Payment at meters and Visitor areas is still required with a placard.
ADA Parking at Center City is currently provided at the Secure Parking Lot at 422 E 9th St. Both a UNC Charlotte parking permit and disability placard are required.
Disability placards are registered to people, not vehicles. It is unlawful to use a placard not registered to you.

What determines the price of a permit? The primary factor that determines permit price is the cost of
new deck construction and replacing flat lots with decks. UNCCharlottehashadtobuildfiveparkingdecksinthelasttenyears. It’s expensive to build and maintain the new parking decks neces-sary to accommodate enrollment and demand. Existing surface lotsmakewayfornewbuildings;thosespacesmustbereplacedwith decks.
How are the proceeds from permits spent?ThemajorityofthepermitproceedsandVisitorParkingfeesgo
toward construction of new decks, to pay debt on existing decks, andforrepairsandmaintenanceofalldecksandlots.Asmallpercentage is used for operations such as utilities to light the decks and lots, trash collection, cameras, personnel, etc.
Is it true that more permits are sold than there are spaces?Yes. If permits were sold on a one-permit-to-one-space system,
thousands of students would be denied the privilege to park while lotsanddeckswouldsithalfempty.Fewspacesareoccupiedformore than five or six hours a day and not everyone has classes or works every day. Therefore, parking spaces turn over constantly. Sure, convenient, close-in parking is at a premium during peak classhours, butsofar,ParkingandTransportationServiceshasmaintained an acceptable percentage of open spaces. That’s why measures like sales limits and excluding freshmen have so far been avoided.

Park farther out and take the shuttle!South Village Deck is a great alternate parking area for Commuters because there are plenty of spaces near shuttle service; both the Rt. 47 Yellow Line and the Rt. 49 Green Line pick up there.
The NE side of Lot 6 (on Cameron near John Kirk) has a Red Line stop in an area that almost always has plenty of available parking. From there you can easily shuttle to Fretwell, Student Union, Woodward, and CRI campus.
