Commonly Seen Species:Over 260 species of plants, 135species of birds, and other wildlifecan be found in Majestic View Park.

Common WhitetailDragonfly –Theseadept flyers dartaround the wetlandslooking for tasty

mosquitos. The male (pictured) andfemale have different wing patterns,the latter having three black blotcheson each wing.

American White Pelican – In the morning, look for thelarge white birdsscooping fish out ofthe lake. Later in the

day they can often be seen ridingthermal updrafts high in the sky.

Coyote – Occasionally,coyotes can be seenand heard on theprairie slope north eastof Oberon Lake. Theyhunt for abundant

cottontail rabbits and other smallmammals.

American Kestrel –The smallest memberof the falcon family, it isoften perched on apowerline or atop atree, ready to prey

upon grasshoppers, mice, dragonfliesor other birds.

Garter Snake – Thissmall snake can beseen warming itself onthe trails. It is harmlessto humans, but not to

slugs, worms, toads and rodents.

Muskrat –This rodent,sometimes seen leavingripples as it swims, isnot actually a rat.However, it also is

adaptable, has an omnivorous diet,and a long thin tail.

Cattail –These wetlandplants, spread by rhizomes,create thick, inpenetrablestands which provide habitat, food, and nurseriesfor wetland animals.

Praying Mantis –Look for thesestealthy predatorsin the late summer,often at the tops

of prairie grasses. Look carefully, theyare usually camouflaged.

Red-Eared Slider –These turtles, seenbasking on the log inthe lake, are not native

to Colorado, creating competition forour native western painted turtlesthat live in Oberon Lake.

Yucca – Yuccas have asymbiotic relationshipwith the yucca moth. TheYucca seeds are eaten bythe moth’s larvae. Theadult moths spread the

pollen from plant to plant.

Nature Center and Demonstration Garden – Learn about the natural historyof Arvada, see wildlife displays,participate in programs, andenjoy hands-on-learning. Strollthe garden, picking up ideas forplantings at your own home.

Astronomy Pad – A concretepad with amber lighting andelectricity. Can accommodateup to 6 telescopes, perfect forviewing the night sky.

Outdoor Classroom –A flagstone patio, shade trees,and grassy lawn anchor our outdoor classroom, accommo-dating large school groups and public programs.

Prairie Trail (0.1 miles) – A paved trail with benches.Enjoy views of the front range tothe west and grazing horses tothe east.

Cattail Trail (0.3 miles) – A gravel trail sloping throughshort grass prairie. Check outthe wetland grasses and wildlifeat the bridge.

Interpretive Trail (0.35 miles)and Oberon Lake Path (0.1miles) – A paved trail with viewsof Oberon Lake and signs toteach about the local ecosystem.Don’t miss the spur gravel trailnear the Nature Center, leadingto a deck overlooking the lake.

Playground & Recreation Area –Tennis courts, a basketball court,a creative playground, picnic tables, and lots of shady grassyareas to enjoy the view.

Urban Agriculture Site – Pioneer Farmsteaders cultivatethis area to provide a locationfor hands-on learning while also growing fresh produce andflowers for sale and donation.Get more information atpioneerfarmsteaders.com.

Nature: Explore – Count treerings, make stick forts, balanceon logs, stack rocks, dig holes inthe dirt, and discover nature’swonders in this interactive environment.
