...working together to build a strong business community
Dear friends and colleagues,
Park Life
Did you know that businesses can exchange
their old or damaged ladders and receive a new
one with up to a 50% discount? It is called ‘The
Ladder Exchange’. The scheme aims to reduce
the number of falls caused by faulty ladders and
stepladders by inviting businesses to trade in the
old ones in order to receive a discount. It used
to be organised by the HSE in 2007 but in 2012
leadership of the scheme was passed to the
Ladder Association. The Ladder Exchange 2014
runs for three months ending on 31st December
2014. You can access it via a selection of online
and trade-counter retailers listed on their official
website: http://www.ladderexchange.org.uk
The discount varies according to the supplier
but a business can expect a maximum of
50%. Although the headline indicates that this
programme aims to remove dodgy ladders from
use, according to the Ladder Exchange website,
the trade-in partners should “offer discounts
in exchange for old ladders in any condition”.
It should therefore be perfectly acceptable to
exchange for a higher quality ladder or simply
one of a more useful specification or size to meet
your needs. As the Ladder Exchange is run by
a trade association rather than the HSE, there’s
an inevitable risk that the deals offered will be
less generous than they used to be. You should
compare prices to check you’re getting the best
deal and make sure that whatever product you
purchase meets the standard required for use in
the workplace, i.e. Class 1 (industrial use) or EN131
for the first time and we are delighted to welcome
Laura Still who has taken on the three year
engineering role.
Laura was Head Girl at the Sir Robert Woodard
Academy and had been offered a place at Exeter
University to study Engineering, but decided to
pursue a vocational education instead.
The apprenticeship is running in line with a
two year BTEC Level 3 Mechanical Engineering
day release course. Laura will attend classes at
Northbrook College, Worthing, one day a week
and spend the rest of her time at Parafix. Laura
will be joined on the course by Luke Murphy,
machine operator and another new young recruit
at Parafix.
Laura will be studying areas such as mechanical
design, CAD and process engineering which will
complement her training at Parafix. To provide
Laura with a well rounded understanding of
Parafix, our processes and our customers’ needs,
she will spend time in various departments
Parafix UK welcomes engineering apprentice
throughout the company. Her main role is
within our R&D Department, but during her
apprenticeship she will also gain experience
working with Quality Assurance (QA), Health &
Safety (H&S), Production, Purchasing, Estimating,
Customer Service, Accounts and Operations.
At the end of the apprenticeship it is hoped
that Laura will remain in the company and take
on a Supervisory Role as part of her long and
successful career with Parafix.
We have introduced an apprenticeship because
as our business grows we need more home
grown talent. Michael Punter, Managing Director
at Parafix is a strong believer in apprenticeships
as this is how he started out; as a commercial
apprentice with George Wimpey & Co, working
through their different departments, eventually
staying in their accountancy group.
To learn more about Laura’s time at Parafix keep
an eye out for her monthly blog on the news page
of our website at www.parafix.com.
