The discovery of high-grade ore deposits as far back as theearly 1700s served as a boon to the development of this region.The “lead rush” attracted many people to the area, and newsettlements began springing up around the newly built shafts.

In 1821, Flat River was established, experiencing gradual growthin its early years and a boom in population with the flourishinglead industry. Right next door, the Federal Lead Company andits employees began building homes, resulting in thedevelopment of Leadington in the early 1900s.

Both communities continued to grow alongside the leadindustry, with Flat River gaining municipal incorporation in April of1934 and Leadington in August of 1959. The communities ofthe Lead Belt were hit hard with the closing of the area’s leadmine in 1974; unemployment rates were among the highest inthe state. These hard times led to the transformation of thearea’s economy, as a shift in economic focus drew larger chainstores and new companies.

In 1991, the cities of Flat River, Rivermines, Elvins and Estherbegan discussing the possibility of consolidation as a way tomake the area more economically lucrative. Within a couple ofyears, consolidation was approved by a landslide and the new“City of Park Hills” was born.

Today, both Park Hills and Leadington have continued todevelop, while still retaining their small-town charm andhometown values.

Nestled within southeastern Missouri, just over one hourfrom the Missouri and Illinois border, the cities of Park Hillsand Leadington are afforded an ideal Midwest location.The neighboring communities, part of St. FrancoisCounty’s Lead Belt (also recognized as the Mineral Area),are connected by MO Route 32. U.S. Route 67 runsalong the eastern border of Park Hills, linking withInterstate 55 (approximately 30 miles east of the area)and providing a direct link to the city of St. Louis,positioned around 1.5 hours north of Park Hills andLeadington.

General aviation services are provided nearby at theBismarck Memorial Airport and Farmington RegionalAirport. General public transportation is afforded through theSoutheast Missouri Transportation Service (SMTS), a non-profit organization operating in 20 Missouri counties,including St. Francois County. SMTS provides curb-to-curbpassenger services (Monday-Friday), such as long-distance medical service, local service and customservices for groups and organizations.

The residential market of thissoutheast Missouri region is asdiverse as they come,accommodating thoseinterested in owning, renting orbuilding the home of theirdreams. There are plenty ofoptions for young families,empty nesters and retirees.

High-quality, pre-built/pre-owned single-family houses areavailable in a variety of styles, including charming bungalowsand ranches, restored historic homes and sprawling custom-built homes. The prices are just as varied, ranging from as lowas $15,000 to more than $350,000.

Rental housing and several apartment complexes offeraffordable rental opportunities, generally ranging from $200 to$750 each month. There are also senior living apartments andassisted living facilities. For those inquiring about custombuilding, the area offers several vacant lots within city limits, aswell as new subdivisions in the midst of being developed.

The City of Park Hills Parks & Recreation Department overseesseveral area parks and facilities, which are frequented byresidents of both communities. The largest and most utilized ofthe area’s parks is Columbia Park, which houses a publicswimming pool, four shelters, a gazebo, a chapel, picnicfacilities, an outdoor amphitheater and a lighted walking trail.The Park Hills Sports Complex is also bustling with activity,featuring one baseball field, two regulation-sized softball fieldsand two child-sized softball fields. It serves as the home field forCentral High School’s baseball and softball teams. The complexalso features an indoor horseshoe arena, a full-sized basketballcourt, a tennis court and two handball courts. The Lewis StreetLions Park, Haney Park, Seventh Street Park, the Elvin’s Park andthe Park Hills Veteran’s Park round out the local park sites.

Maintaining an active mind is just as important as keeping one’sbody active. The Park Hills Public Library is highly employed byresidents of both Park Hills and Leadington, providing a host ofresources, genealogy information, Internet access andprograms for patrons of all ages. The first Monday evening ofeach month is Genealogy Night and the summer months areset aside for the Summer Reading Program. The library alsooffers Learning Express, which supplies free study guides,workbooks, practice tests and videos to those preparing forvocational certificates, the GED exam and various otherstandardized tests.

The Park Hills and Leadington area is located within the Old LeadBelt and the world’s leading lead mining district. Park Hills hoststhe Missouri Mines State Historic Site, a destination that depictsMissouri’s rich mining history. The 25-building mine-mill complexand surrounding land was donated in the mid-1970s by St. JoeMinerals Corp., once a leading ore producer. The site nowfeatures a museum, which displays restored undergroundmining equipment, mineral specimens and various geologyexhibits.

The Missouri Mines State Historic Site is located within the 8,238-acre St. Joe State Park. Recognized as Missouri’s third-largeststate park, St. Joe is best known for housing the Midwest’s largestoff road vehicle area—spanning approximately 2,000 acres.The park draws around 700,000 visitors and hosts a number ofexciting ATV races. Other popular diversions include horsebackriding, hiking, biking, picnicking, camping and swimming atMonsanto Lake.

Just outside of the two communities are a number of additionaltourist attractions. Nearby Bonne Terre is home to St. Francois

State Park, a notablestarting point for float tripsto Washington State Parkand a great place forhorseback riding,camping and picnicking.Ste. Genevieve is the siteof one of the state’s finestexamples of unspoiledlandscapes at Hawn StatePark, while also hosting afantastic National Historic Landmark District, which houses theFelix Valle House State Historic Site.

Visitors of Park Hills and Leadington also have access toElephant Rocks State Park, the Fort Davidson State Historic Site,Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park and Taum Sauk Mountain StatePark—all of which are reachable in approximately one hour. TheTrail of Tears National Historic Site and the Ozark National ScenicRiverways are positioned within two hours of Park Hills andLeadington.

In addition to these outstanding outdoorspaces, the area features a variety of retailshops in the growing Park Hills downtowndistrict and Leadington business district,and hosts a number of exciting annualevents. Drawing residents from Park Hills,Leadington and beyond are suchanticipated annual events as the MissouriMines Rock Swap, Firecracker Run, St.Francois County Fair, St. Joe Rendezvousand the Native American Pow Wow. MineralArea College (MAC) also offers a multitudeof excellent events and programming,including the Jazz Festival in March andpresentations by the Little Theatre Guild.

The Mineral Area Regional Medical Center(MARMC) has grown immensely since itsoriginal opening on June 17, 1952. Today,MARMC is a 135-bed, full-service, acute-carehospital equipped with state-of-the-arttechnology and a dedicated base ofemployees and physicians. An affiliate ofCapella Healthcare, the medical center offersa comprehensive selection of medicalservices and high-quality care in acompassionate environment.

Parkland Health Center (PHC), a member ofBJC HealthCare, came to fruition following themerging of two area facilities in 1991. Today,PHC is noted among the nation’s “Top 100Hospitals” by Thomson Reuters. PHC-BonneTerre is a primary care facility housing medicaloffices, a 24-hour emergency room andancillary services.
