Are You Listening?
“Let anyone with ears listen!”
--Matthew 11:15 NRSV
The great 20th century theologian Paul Tillich wrote, “The first duty of
love is to listen.” I don’t know about you, but listening is pretty difficult
for me. “Chase, are you listening to me?” is a common refrain in my
house that usually is said by my wife when my nose is buried in my
phone. When I talk with others, especially people I disagree with, often
I’m not listening to their words at all but merely thinking of what I will
say next. Listening, really listening is valued less and less in a culture
that allows all of us to post our thoughts at all times.

Prayer Requests
Dear Park Hill Christian Church,
I am writing to let you
know that June will be
my last month serving
as youth minister. I want
to thank everyone for
their time, love and
support of the youth department.
My family has enjoyed our time at Park
Hill and the relationships we made. I
have no doubt that Park Hill can do
great things for The Kingdom.
While the Aviles family is leaving, there
is one who will never leave; Jesus
Christ. Cling to Him, His Word and His
leadership.
I pray you have a wonderful future. I
pray you find new ways to connect
with the neighborhood and invite more
people to join you Sunday mornings.
I leave you with the Mizpah blessing
found in Genesis 31:49,
“The Lord watch between me and
thee, when we are absent one from
another.”
In Christ’s love,
Matt Aviles

Conversation About How to Do Church Differently Once Churches Reopen
and Beyond Greater Kansas City Region Disciples of Christ
Tuesdays in June at 3:00 PM and 8:00 PMClick on this link to register: https://www.kcdisciples.org/meetingaccessinformation.html
You are invited to take part in a Region-wide conversation. For six Tuesdays we will gather online
to look at ourselves and our congregations and Region in a lightly curated conversation. In other
words, this will not be "You listen, I will teach." Instead, we will practice a model of
transformative community conferencing where we pray, converse about what we noticed during
the outbreak and our response to COVID 19, look at the narratives (some biblical, some we
identify as coming from somewhere else) that had us on auto-pilot and/or scrambling for
direction. We will consider together where God may want to change the story we tell ourselves
for a future that better reflects the primary values and hopes of Jesus. Have your Bibles handy.
I look forward to learning with you. Future generations of Christians are counting on us.Bill Rose-Heim, Regional Minister and President
