The Ascension of the Lord • May 13, 2018 | 3!
!
My mother recently turned 90 years old, and so my 11 siblings and I all
gathered together to honor her up in Michigan a couple of months ago. The gift of our company was all that she wanted, as she keeps telling us that she is too old to want any
new gifts. (She is pretty unsentimental, and reminds us that she is at a time in her life when she wants to get rid of things instead of acquiring them before she passes on).!
But the gift that we did share was the gift of memories of how good a mother she was to us.!
When we were waltzing down memory lane talking about that, several of us started reminiscing about the gifts we had gotten for her throughout the years, starting as children. I recalled something that my 3rd grade teacher, Miss Angelucci, had us make for our mothers in grade school art class. We each brought in a glass bottle, and then went to work cutting out descriptive words from magazines (“wonderful,” “Kind,” “Super” and so forth). Then we took some brightly colored tissue paper (yellow and orange, if I recall) and lots of Elmer’s glue to plaster that all on to the bottle and make a pencil holder for our moms. Well, let’s just say that I used just a little bit too much Elmer’s glue, so mine wasn’t exactly the most beautiful objet d’art. Nevertheless, our teacher promised us that our mothers would treasure these gifts for a long time to come. I don’t think she counted on mothers like mine who had 8 children at home and a limited amount of storage space in the house! So I noticed my mom discreetly slipping it into the trash can a few days later.!
But even though the gifts we buy for our mothers may not last long, we know that their love for us from the moment we are conceived is an extraordinarily beautiful and powerful gift from the Lord. So we ask Him to be grateful for the gift of nourishing life that our mothers gave to us.!
I know that I will be grateful each and every day of my life for the examples of faith and selflessness that my mother taught me in her life of constant sacrifice for us. And I am grateful to the Lord that He has blessed her with a good long life, so that she could see her children and her children’s children grow and mature, as she was surrounded by so many of them on that March evening in the reception hall we rented for her party. !
Finally, we are grateful to Mary Our Mother who constantly intercedes for us, even if our earthly mothers may be long gone. I grew up in a home full of images of the Blessed Virgin Mary such as paintings and statues of the Madonna and child and in retrospect, as an adult and a priest, I am sure that they were constant reminders to my mother to pray to Mary to intercede for and guide her own motherhood.!
May Our Lady do the same for all the mothers of the parish. Happy Mother’s Day!!

Happening at OLV
St. Vincent de Paul
Today as we celebrate the feast of the Ascension, we are reminded that Christ’s saving work on earth continues through His disciples...and now through us.
When we give to the poor, God
indeed pours His love, peace,
and joy into our hearts. He
pours it into our lives and into
the hearts of those who are
poor.

Please join us on Sunday, July 1st after the 11:00am Mass for a reception honoring
Fr. Reutter and his 12 years here at Our Lady of Victory.
TRANSITION NEWS:
Effective July 2nd, Archbishop Schnurr has appointed Fr. Reutter as pastor of St. Peter Parish in New Richmond and St. Mary Parish in Bethel. Those two parishes are both in Clermont County, Ohio. New Richmond is located about 13 miles south (upriver) from Coney Island. Bethel is located about 18 miles east of the Beechmont Mall and 6 miles from the East Fork Lake recreation area. Because of the current shortage of voca-tions, many of our priests are being asked to serve as pastor of two (or more) parishes. Please pray for Fr. Reutter in his new assignment.

Christ Jesus, before ascending into heaven, you promised to send the Holy Spirit to your apostles and disciples. Grant that the same Spirit may perfect in our lives the work of your grace and love. Grant us the Spirit of fear of the Lord that we may be filled with loving reverence toward you; the Spir-it of piety that we might find
peace and fulfillment in the service of God while serving others; the Spirit of fortitude that we may bear our cross with you and, with courage overcome the obstacles that in-terfere with our salvation; the Spirit of knowledge that we may know you and know ourselves and grow in holiness; the Spirit of understanding to enlighten our minds with the light of your truth; the Spirit of counsel that we may choose the surest way of doing your will, seeking first the kingdom. Grant us the Spirit of wisdom that we may aspire to the things that last forever. Teach us to be your faithful disci-ples and animate us in every way with your Spirit. Amen.!

Spiritual Motherhood of Priests
Our parish is joining all the parishes across the Archdiocese in launching a new prayer apostolate
that encourages women to consider becoming a spiritual mother to one priest or seminarian of
our Archdiocese. Prayer for priests and seminarians has been proven to be effective throughout
the history of the Church and we would like all the women of the parish to consider signing their
name to the poster located in the vestibule and taking a packet of materials to begin praying for
your new spiritual son. For more information about this apostolate please visit
