The Sixth Sunday of Easter May 1, 2016
Dear Parishioners and Friends,
Both last weekend and this weekend the parish is celebrating with our younger sisters and brothers, along with their families, their coming forth to receive Jesus for the first time in the Eucharist. Their enthusiasm and their joy are contagious. They have been waiting for this day for years. Now, like their older siblings, and parents they can come forward with their hands reaching out to accept Jesus in the palm of their hands and He filling their hearts with His presence and overwhelming love.
Did the presence of the First Communicants make you think of your First Communion? Many people shared with me some of their memories. What powerful moments. Memories of years gone by, yet alive in our minds.
At one of the celebrations last weekend, during the consecration, when I quoted Jesus’ words: “Take this all of you and eat,” one of the youngsters said, “Ya, ok.” He was right there, Jesus was present to him and he was responding not so much to my words but to the reality of Jesus talking to him
personally. Our Lord’s words are meant for each of us personally, like the youngster’s experience, yet we often pull away and dismiss the possibility of
the reality of God wishing to touch each of us individually.
This weekend’s First Communion once again provides us with the opportunity to hear the Lord speaking to us personally beckoning us to draw near to him. May our response be,” So be it.”
May peace be given you,
Fr Ron

THE 6TH SUNDAY OF EASTERMAY 1, 2016What Will We Do?
Your best friend is leaving town. There is no way to change things. It is certain. What will you do about your sorrow?
For instance:
Jesus told Mary Magdalene he had to leave the world to go to the Father. He now had plunged into death and had made his way to shore, but he could not stay here.
We grieve with her.
Yet in Sunday's liturgy he says, “If you loved me you would rejoice.”
Sounds like what we experience at a funeral. We are glad that our beloved no longer has the pains and shortages of this life. But what about us? Our burden is not lifted, there is more added to it. What will fill the space where the loved one lived?
I N C A R N A T I O N P A R I S H
5
But then, surprise, Jesus told the disciples something quite puzzling. “Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid. I am going away and I will come back to you.”
Going away and coming back? What is he talking about?
It is hard to express in words, but of course the present writer will rush in. It may seem abstract, but I’ll give it a try, and please have patience.
(1) Start with the pre-Jesus world. God the Father had been with the people for all ages. The First Testament tells about this, over and over.
But no one, even Moses, was allowed to look directly. God says,
I will set you in the hollow of the rock and will cover you with my hand until I have passed by. Then I will remove my hand, so that you may see my back [really it says “so that you may look upon my hindermost quarters”!]; but my face is not to be seen. (see Ex 33:18-23).
(2) To remedy this situation, God decided to show us everything about himself, in a way we could understand. He spoke out his very self, using a Word that left nothing unsaid. Humanity is the language he used, and Jesus was the Word spoken. Now God could be known because we could know Jesus.
(3) Jesus dies, resurrects, and ascends to the Father, from whom he came. Are we abandoned? No.
In the same way that the Father had done, Jesus now spoke out his own self in another Word that left nothing of himself unsaid.
That Word is the Holy Spirit.
This Spirit is the full reality of the divine/human being called Jesus, and is thus the very interior Spirit of God. We are to be closer to Jesus and to the Father than the apostles were!*
If you and I say yes to this Spirit, we will know Jesus just as sheep know the voice of their shepherd. And, knowing Jesus, we will know the Father.
We will find Jesus in the Mass, in the Great Eucharistic Sacrament, in prayer, in the people around us, in those we help. We will be side by side with each other, in the closest possible presence of the God of love.
So.
Was it too abstract?
Well, it is the story of our very fleshly life with God on this earth. It is the story of true presence within absence._____________________*Also see Romans 8:11.

THE PERSPECTIVE OF JUSTICEA Better World
No celebration of Easter would be complete without a reference to the peace brought to us by
. I N C A R N A T I O N P A R I S H

the Paschal mystery. Today’s liturgy provides us with that reference: ‘Peace’ is my farewell to you, my peace is my gift to you.
Peace is what Jesus gave us in his redemptive acts of dying and rising.
The early Christian communities experienced dissension and controversy. The reading from Acts documents the manner in which the leaders of the church resolved those conflicts and brought peace to the Church.
There is a lesson for us in the elements of their peaceful settlement: the exercise of responsible leadership, respect for all the members of the community, and the decision “not to lay on you any burden beyond that which is strictly necessary.”
“O God, let all the nations praise you!” for you have rescued them from death and offered them the gift of peace through your resurrection.
The perfect world, we Christians believe, is beyond the horizon, in an endless eternity where God will be all in all. But a better world is here for human hands and hearts and minds to make.
For the community of faith the risen Christ is the beginning and end of all things. For all things were created through him and all things will return to the Father through him.
It is our belief in the risen Christ which sustains us in confronting the awesome challenge of the nuclear arms race.

JOINING THE PARISHNo matter what your journey has been, we want to be your companions for the next steps, to share the Gospel together and to help each other along the way. Most of us are from within parish boundaries in Melrose and Saugus, but we have parishioners from as far afield as Georgetown and Framingham! Please introduce yourself to a staff member, or drop in for coffee on Sunday. You can register as a parishioner online via our website, or stop by the rectory.
ADULT INITIATION, RCIAWe are always ready to begin the process by which an adult or older child becomes a Catholic, either by full initiation in baptism, or by reception into full communion. We are also happy to prepare you for adult Confirmation. Contact Fr. Ron.
BAPTISM FOR INFANTSNormally, the baptism of infants is celebrated within the Sunday assembly at a time convenient to the parents. Parents must be parishioners here or have a letter of permission from their pastor. Fr. Ron is the staff contact person for preparation.
GENERATIONS OF FAITHWe are a community of life-long learners. Our parish program of inter-generational learning and celebration of faith is called Generations of Faith. We all meet together several times a year for “Faith Festivals,” and many opportunities for adult learning and enrichment are offered in the bulletin and programs. Materials are in the Church or available at our Faith Formation Office through Ann Lahiff.
MARRIAGEThe engaged couple must contact the Rectory at least six months in advance, preferably a year ahead. One must be a parishioner, or have permission by his or her own pastor to celebrate the marriage with us.
CARE OF THE SICK To arrange for the Sacrament of the Sick, for Holy Communion for the home-bound, or Viaticum for the Dying, please contact the parish office. We normally send ministers out with communion after the eight o’clock on Sunday, and also schedule regular home visits during the week. It is always possible to anoint the sick during regularly scheduled liturgies. All you have to do is ask!
ORDER of CHRISTIAN FUNERALSWe will work with you to plan your own funeral liturgy or that of a loved one, and are prepared to celebrate the Vigil, also known as the “Wake,” in the Church building for those who choose.
