Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary TimeJune 12, 2016

Dear Parishioners and Friends,Most evenings the church parking lot is full of cars. This is also true for Saturday mornings into mid-afternoon. The reason is because of our parish baseball program and that the three fields can accommodate different age groups at one time. On several occasions I have gone over to watch a game. On this past Tuesday I also went to watch a game. One of the youngsters said to me, “I have never seen a priest at a baseball game.” I responded with, “Now you have.” “Did your team win?” “No, it was my sister’s game that I came to watch” was his response. I try to be present for different parish activities as time and energy allow.

Some of you have expressed a concern for my health. Thank you for your kindness and for your prayers. Yes, I too rely on your prayers. Maybe a brief update is in order. For the last several weeks, my primary care doctor has been monitoring my heart because of the shortness of breath I have been experiencing. This past week I met with a cardiologist and his diagnosis is that the heart is fine.

That is good news. As to the shortness of breath, there is no definitive answer. It could be that the chronic Lyme Disease, which has been in remission for over eight years, has reactivated. I will be seeing a specialist for that issue next week. The saga is ongoing.

Again thank you for your prayers. Maybe a verse from this weekends’ liturgy from Psalm 32 is appropriate:

“You (O,Lord) are my shelter, from distress you will preserve me;with glad cries of freedom you will ring me round.Be glad in the Lord and rejoice, you just;exult all you upright of heart.”

How much we easily take for granted, especially our health.

May peace be given you,

Fr Ron

CONGRATULATIONS AND FAREWELLCongratulations to our neighbor Fr. Bill Coughlin, who recently celebrated his 50th anniversary of his ordination. We also offer best wishes to Fr. Sea!n Maher, who will be leaving St. Mary’s Melrose on June 13th to be administrator at St. Francis Parish in Dracut. Our parish has been blessed to have such wonderful caring priests in our neighboring parishes.

#BOSTONBISHOPSCardinal Seán O’Malley and the Archdiocese of Boston rejoice that Pope Francis has named Rev. Robert P. Reed and Very Reverend Mark O’Connell, JCD as Auxiliary Bishops of the Archdiocese of Boston. Some of you will remember Bishop-elect O’Connell as the nephew of Fr. David Delaney who served as co-pastor of Incarnation for many years.

BACKPACK DRIVEWe realize that this school year has not even ended, but when back-to-school shopping begins, please keep the people at Housing Families in mind. For the second year in a row, Incarnation will be participating in a “Backpack Drive.” During the month of July we will have a table at the back of the church, and we will be accepting school supplies and durable backpacks. A complete list of suggestions will be available by the table, and we will publish it in an upcoming bulletin.

Join us to learn to decode behavioral messages, identify common behavior triggers, and learn strategies to help intervene with some of the most common behavioral challenges of Alzheimer’s disease.  This program will be held on Thursday, June 23rd from 4-6pm at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital, (Gallagher Room), 170 Governors Avenue in Medford. Registration required please call 781-338-7823.  Presented by the Alzheimer’s Association; sponsored by Hallmark Health System, Inc.

A MESSAGE FROM SHINE: WHAT ARE MEDIGAP PLANS?Medigap plans are health insurance plans that provide extra protection beyond Medicare by filling in some of the “gaps” in Medicare coverage. In Massachusetts, these plans allow continuous open enrollment. You must have Medicare A and B to enroll, and cannot be enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan. Anyone who is eligible may enroll or change plans or coverage levels at any time, with changes effective the first of the following month. Note that Medigap policies do not cover prescription drugs, which are covered separately under Medicare Part D.

A Medigap policy will generally pay only when Medicare approves payment. You are free to choose any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare and you do not need referrals to see a specialist.

For assistance with choosing a Medigap plan or any Medicare issue, contact the SHINE (Serving the Health Insurance Needs of Everyone…on Medicare) Program. Trained SHINE counselors offer free, in-person, confidential counseling on all aspects of Medicare and related insurance programs. To make an appointment, call your local senior center or the Regional SHINE office at

Mystic Valley Elder Services in Malden at 781-388-4845. You’ll be asked to leave a message and a daytime phone number and a SHINE counselor will return your call.

ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMEJUNE 12,2015CourtesyAn embarrassing display.

The occasion was already delicate, to say the least. Jesus had been invited to a private dinner in the house of Simon the Pharisee. This was an honor, but at the same time a dishonor, since Simon ignored the usual courtesies due to a guest in that culture.

. I N C A R N A T I O N P A R I S H

4

Page 6: Parish of the Incarnation of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ · 2016-06-10 · Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time June 12, 2016 Dear Parishioners and Friends, Most evenings the church

What kind of courtesies? Water to cleanse his feet, a kiss of welcome, the anointing of his head.

As dinner went on, “a sinful woman” barged into the house without asking, and sat on the floor right behind Jesus. She began weeping. We are not told why, only that she obviously loved Jesus a lot.

At the dinner, she “began to bathe his feet with her tears.” And she actually dried them with her hair. What an embarrassing display.

Finally, she took out a beautifully ornamented flask—which she had brought carefully for this purpose. She spread the precious ointment which it contained upon his feet, giving them repeated kisses.

To the other guests she seemed completely out of control. Simon the Pharisee said under his breath,

If this man were a prophet, he would know who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, that she is a sinner.

Jesus certainly did know. Not only about her sins, but her goodness, which he was seeing. He accepted both tenderly. And then he gave a sharp rebuke to Simon the Pharisee.

When I entered your house, you did not give me water for my feet, but she has bathed them with her tears

and wiped them with her hair. You did not give me a kiss, but she has not ceased kissing my feet since the time I entered. You did not anoint my head with oil,but she anointed my feet with ointment.

Then, with deft words, he showed that her actions came directly from her loving heart. Here is the important line, which I will paraphrase: *

Her many sins have been forgiven; that is the reason she has shown such great love. If she had

been forgiven only a little bit, her love would be small as a result.

Notice it is not the case that the woman loved Jesus and therefore was deserving of forgiveness. It is just the opposite. He had already forgiven her sins, and as a result she loved him. God’s love is always first no matter how sinful we are. It remains personal and present for each of us, if we can let go of our guilt.

It is because we are all so inadequate that his love takes the form of absolution. Usually you and I have it backwards. We think we must get rid of all our sins and become perfect and sinless in order for God to love us. In reality we are already loved to perfection by the good Lord, and we begin to reform as we slowly let that love in. We begin to recognize who we really are. We soften our hearts toward the mess we have made of our lives,

because we see that somehow we are loved as we are.

In this is love: not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as expiation for our sins (1 John 4:1-10).

Let it happen.______________* The words of the USCCB (American) Bible translation (1986) are, “her many sins have been forgiven; hence she has shown great love.” Correct. The word “hence” carries the meaning.

This passage was changed when it was placed in the lectionary (the readings for daily Mass), for what reason I cannot guess. The lectionary has this a more traditional rendering: “Her many sins have been forgiven because she has shown great love.

Unfortunately for the English language, these words are ambiguous. They could sound as if her great love is the cause of her forgiveness, or in other words, the reason her sins have been forgiven is that she has shown great love. This conflicts with the whole point of this Gospel reading: that we don’t earn our salvation by being sinless.

HISTORICAL CULTURAL CONTEXTExperiencing ForgivenessThough similar to stories reported in Matthew 26:6-13, Mark 14:3-9, and John 12:1-8, Luke's report appears to be an independent tradition. Sensitivity to the cultural world in which this story originated makes it possible to highlight a few of Luke's special interests.

DebtThe central point of this story—forgiveness of sin—hinges on first-century Mediterranean peasant understanding of debt. Scholars estimate that excessive claims upon meager peasant resources (tithes, taxes, tribute, numerous tolls) consumed between 35 and 40 percent of total agricultural production. The path to enormous indebtedness required but a few small steps.

Peasants who were unable to repay their loans lost their land and became tenant sharecroppers. When

this, too, failed, they were driven from their ancestral land. Since the scriptural evidence indicates that Jesus was known by all to be from Nazareth yet his ancestral ties extended back to Bethlehem, scholars suggest that at some point in history his ancestors experienced precisely this kind of fate. Such dispossessed people who lost their land frequently became artisans like Joseph and Jesus.

It is this experience of material indebtedness and both the hope and possibility of its forgiveness as

in Jesus' parable (and the Lord's Prayer) that helped a peasant to understand the forgiveness of sin. Jesus' question to Simon the Pharisee was easy to answer: a person forgiven a large debt would exhibit greater gratitude than someone forgiven a

this, too, failed, they were driven from their ancestral land.

It is this experience of material indebtedness and both the hope and possibility of its forgiveness as

smaller debt.

Our ancestors typically judged each other by external features and actions (1 Sam 16:7). Anyone who witnessed the woman's uninhibited display of love and gratitude could conclude from her actions that she had already experienced forgiveness of sin. “Her many sins have surely been forgiven by God since she has shown such love.”

The Woman and the PhariseeLuke also paints a deliberate contrast between the Pharisee and the woman. By inviting Jesus to a meal, the Pharisee recognizes Jesus as an equal. In the Mediterranean world, only equals can invite each other to meals. But after Jesus' arrival, the Pharisee extends no other sign of hospitality, suggesting that he does not accept Jesus for who he is: God's prophet.

The woman stands in stark contrast. The story tells us she was a sinner but gives not a clue regarding the nature of her sin. Though her sinful reputation was known in the city, we do not know what city it was. That she boldly enters the men's space (reclining at table) and is not impeded by Simon. Some scholars suggest she might be a widow, but Simon's neglect may also be part of his determination to withhold signs of hospitality and respect for Jesus.

The woman, however, performs for Jesus all the signs of hospitality that the Pharisee quite intentionally omitted: she provides water for cleansing (Lk 7:44), tenders a kiss of greeting (Lk 7:45), and provides perfumed oil for anointing (Lk 7:46). It is precisely these deeds that tell us the woman has been forgiven. Simon's refusal to act like a host indicates that he has not experienced—perhaps not even sought—forgiveness.

RECONCILIATION Saturday, 3:30 - 4:15 pm, or by appointment at any time.

JOINING THE PARISHNo matter what your journey has been, we want to be your companions for the next steps, to share the Gospel together and to help each other along the way. Most of us are from within parish boundaries in Melrose and Saugus, but we have parishioners from as far afield as Georgetown and Framingham! Please introduce yourself to a staff member, or drop in for coffee on Sunday. You can register as a parishioner online via our website, or stop by the rectory.

ADULT INITIATION, RCIAWe are always ready to begin the process by which an adult or older child becomes a Catholic, either by full initiation in baptism, or by reception into full communion. We are also happy to prepare you for adult Confirmation. Contact Fr. Ron.

BAPTISM FOR INFANTSNormally, the baptism of infants is celebrated within the Sunday assembly at a time convenient to the parents. Parents must be parishioners here or have a letter of permission from their pastor. Fr. Ron is the staff contact person for preparation.

GENERATIONS OF FAITHWe are a community of life-long learners. Our parish program of inter-generational learning and celebration of faith is called Generations of Faith. We all meet together several times a year for “Faith Festivals,” and many opportunities for adult learning and enrichment are offered in the bulletin and programs. Materials are in the Church or available at our Faith Formation Office through Ann Lahiff.

MARRIAGEThe engaged couple must contact the Rectory at least six months in advance, preferably a year ahead. One must be a parishioner, or have permission by his or her own pastor to celebrate the marriage with us.

CARE OF THE SICK To arrange for the Sacrament of the Sick, for Holy Communion for the home-bound, or Viaticum for the Dying, please contact the parish office. We normally send ministers out with communion after the eight o’clock on Sunday, and also schedule regular home visits during the week. It is always possible to anoint the sick during regularly scheduled liturgies. All you have to do is ask!

ORDER of CHRISTIAN FUNERALSWe will work with you to plan your own funeral liturgy or that of a loved one, and are prepared to celebrate the Vigil, also known as the “Wake,” in the Church building for those who choose.

And watch for upcoming events... There is always something in the works on Wingate !

The Pilot is an important voice in the public square that brings you the Catholic perspective on current events.

Inspired by the vision of our publisher, Cardinal Seán O’Malley, The Pilot covers it all — from in-depth reporting on Pope Francis to the good works of Boston parishes.

Each week, The Pilot brings you the stories of Boston Catholics who bring the Works of Mercy to life on a daily basis.

Proclaiming the present Holy Year of Mercy, Pope Francis said he wants to make it evident that the Church’s mission is to be a witness of compassion. “Let us not forget that God forgives and God forgives always,” Pope Francis said. “Let us never tire of asking for forgiveness.”

We invite you to join the Pilot readership today for only $19.95. This limited-time offer saves you 49% off the regular subscription rate. Thank you for your support.
