From Where Do You Draw Inspiration?

Page 3, St. John’s Parish News, March 2017

The sound of the piano drifts along as I show newly-baptized baby Owen to an admiring congregation.Owen is the youngest of Gavin and Amanda Campbell’s four children. We stop by a long-time parishioner,Lou Anderson, who is turning 90. The oldest and newest Christians in the room get a good look at eachother, like a high and low chord, harmonizing beautifully.

In my morning bible reading, I came across a story that was equally inspiring; had I ever read this be-fore? There is no music in the hearts of three kings. They are united in battle against an invading armystronger than all three. Drought across their land is threatening horses and soldiers and generals alike, whoare literally dying of thirst. In a last ditch effort, the three kings remember there is a man of God, a prophet,Elisha, who might help them.

I love that Elisha rejects their initial request. “Go consult your pagan gods. Why come to me?” The kingspersist; Elisha relents only because he respects the faith in God that lives in the heart of one of the kings,Jehoshaphat of Judah.

Then the Old Testament story gets really interesting. Elisha commands them to, “bring me a musician.” Amusician was brought to the man of God. While the harp is being played, Elisha is anointed with the Spiritof God and tells forth the word. The result is victory, not just for the armies in their momentary struggles, but for God. (see 2 Kings 3) The spirit has fear on the run.

Elisha asks for a musician! This is a word not just for the archaic tribes of the past, but for today. Godcontinues to anoint and bless and fill us with inspiration, through the arts, in other surprising places, and inhis Word. How often do we listen to a beautiful piece of scripture set to music, drink in an awesome paint-ing, say ‘aha’ when an apt description in a novel strikes a chord, watch a sports event with rhythmic horsejumping, an athlete scoring, a bird dancing on the feeder? We are drawn to another place, perhaps a mem-ory, or a lifting of the hands to the Lord. God freely gives inspiration in different times and places.

The older disciple Paul writes in his last letter to his young student Timothy, “All scripture is inspired byGod.” (2 Timothy 3:16) May we be found in God and find our inspiration where God points us, to stir themusic of our soul. Discipleship in Christ has its blessings.

Where do you find inspiration?

Yours faithfully, Christopher+

Around St. John’s

On October of 2016, I completed the Lay Anointer TrainingCourse offered at the Sisters of St. John the Divine Convent inToronto.

Because of surgery and treatment, I wasn’t able to use the traininguntil Sunday January 29. At that time, I was commissioned as aLay Anointer and was able to offer anointing to parishioners at theHealing Service. I had attended the October 30, 2016 HealingService, just 4 days after my surgery, so at least I had a chance toexperience this opportunity beforehand.

I received my Licence from the Area Bishop and had this picturetaken with Christopher Sunday Feb. 5. I am leaving for FloridaFebruary 8 and plan to be back in time for the next Healing Serviceon April 30. I also look forward to being able to use this Ministryin Lay Pastoral Visiting as well.

The history of my interest in this Ministry probably began withachieving my 3-year Child & Youth Worker Diploma in1987. Around 2000, the Clergy at All Saints Anglican Whitby ap-proached me, on a Parish Quiet Day at SSJD, and asked if I thoughtI could prepare a training program for Lay Pastoral Visitors. I roseto the challenge and two training sessions were held, leading to adozen visitors. People were assigned, and regular meetings werescheduled, to share successes and challenges.

I also became co-leader in a Prayer Shawl Ministry and this wascombined with Lay Visitors to facilitate delivery of these preciousgifts. Meetings for Prayer Shawl volunteers also became opportu-

nities for sharing and building each other up in God’s Service. When the monthly Communion Service was heldat Fairview Lodge, Lay Pastoral Visitors could deliver shawls to those they visited, especially at special times ofthe Church year.

I have requested training and licensing for Eucharistic Minister as well, so I could also bring Communion toshut-ins and those I may visit in private homes, retirement/nursing homes and hospital settings. Regarding Hos-pitals, I also completed my 3 year Spiritual Care course at Oshawa General Hospital; therefore, I could extendinto that area as well in Bowmanville Hospital.

News from the Teaching GardenGARLIC UPDATE - The garlic has been put to bed where bulbs are snuggled up with straw to protect themfrom January’s freeze and thaw cycle. With the right growing conditions, we should see sprouts by late May.

FEEDING THE HUNGRY COMPOSTER - Plastic and garbage are not acceptable items for our beloved‘C.P’ composter. In order to build soil, our composter requires plant materials. If you are unsure of what to placein the composter, please refer to the list of all acceptable items located in the kitchen.

We will be crafting beedrinks, a wet and safe place for bees to rest and take a drink of water in our garden. If we are kind to the bees, they in turn will pollinate our plants. We will also conduct an experiment using socks to see how humans dis-tribute seeds on God’s earth. Please place donated items in the labelled bags at each entrance of the church.

SUNDAY SCHOOL PIZZA GARDEN -On May 28, we plan to plant vegetables and herbs that can be placedon a pizza. We hope it will look like a pizza when we are done. A square pizza but non-the less a pizza.

CORRECTION - In an article for the previous Parish News onPastoral Visitor, Rev. In fact, she shared these duties, serving asco-coordinator in the Spiritiual and Religious Care Dept.

DID YOU KNOW? - Dates for Easter: The earliest date onwhich Easter Sunday can occur is March 22 and the latest is April25. The date of Easter determines when Pentecostand Ascension Day will be observed in the Christian Calendar. This year, Ascension Day is May 25 and Pentecost is June 4.
