Seven Times Seventy Times
Our gospel story moves from the Jewish legal tradition of forgiving three times before retribution is taken to a Christian
forgiveness that is never ending. In short, we don’t keep count when it comes to forgiveness.
In ancient times, the number seven represented a perfect number; its multiples express the incalculable; seventy times
seven pointing to forgiveness that cannot be limited. It, however, must be noted that while the parable of the
unforgiving servant shows the pardon principle, it also shows the necessity of reciprocity: “Forgive us our trespasses as
we forgive those who trespass against us.”
In sharing this story with Peter, Jesus tells us that we must all learn to forgive, so that we can move on and liberate not
only the person who has offended us, but more importantly ourselves. God Himself sits ready to forgive, every time we
go to confession. All we have to do is ask for forgiveness – genuinely, from the heart. Not like the first servant in the
parable who attempted to manipulate the Master. Genuine sorrow and genuine conversion bring abundance of
forgiveness.
Jesus requires true remorse, a resolve to sin no more. And even if we sin again, we are assured that we can come back.
God will be ready to forgive – seven times seventy times. Perfect forgiveness. Each and every time we ask for it. How
wonderful is that! Seven times seventy times. All we have to do is ask.
Siete veces, setenta veces
Y aunque volvamos a pecar, estamos
seguros de que podemos volver. Dios estará listo para perdonar - siete veces setenta veces. Un Perdón Perfecto. Cada
vez que lo pedimos. ¡Qué maravilloso es eso! Siete veces setenta veces. Todo loque tenemos que hacer es, pedir.
