April 16th, 2017 - Easter Sunday - Resurrection of The Lord

From Fr. Suresh

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading: Acts of the Apostles 10:34a, 37-43

Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 118:1-2, 16-17, 22-23

Second Reading: Colossians 3:1-4

Gospel: John 20:1-9

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION “Christ, our paschal lamb, has been sacrificed;

let us then feast with joy in the Lord.” - 1 Corinthians 5:7b-8a

EASTER SUNDAY… THE AMAZING GIFT OF ETERNAL LIFE

"Then they went away quickly from the tomb, fearful yet overjoyed." The two Marys were in for a surprise. They had come, as

usual, to do the ritual anointing of their dead friend's body. But on their arrival, not only was there an earthquake, there was also an

angel whose "appearance was like lightning" and whose "clothing was white as snow." The brave guards were so scared they

"became like dead men," but the women managed to stay on their feet and hear the words of the angel. Guess what! Jesus isn't here.

He's been raised from the dead. Now go share the good news!

No wonder these women were feeling a mixture of emotions! They were frightened by these incredible supernatural events, but

overjoyed that Jesus was alive again. Just imagine their joy when "Jesus met them on their way," and they were able to embrace

him and worship him. What a day!

Now, we too join in the celebration of this day of all days. Every Easter, we recall these glorious events, but we do more than just

remember. We also rejoice that our Lord is alive right now, that death and sin have been conquered forever, that the gates of heav-

en are open for us. The joy of Easter is not a nostalgic kind of happiness that only looks backwards. It is instead a call to rejoice in

the gifts that we can enjoy today and in eternity.

We may not have seen the angel, felt the earthquake, or kissed the feet of the risen Lord, but we are nonetheless the beneficiaries of

this momentous event. We are an Easter people, a people in the hands of a loving God whose power can overcome all the terrible

threats and trials of existence with the amazing gift of eternal life.

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY The Feast of Divine Mercy, celebrated on the Octave of Easter (the Sunday after Easter Sunday), is a relatively new tradition to the

liturgical calendar. Celebrating the Divine Mercy of Jesus Christ, as revealed by Christ Himself to St. Maria Faustina Kow-

alska, this feast was extended to the entire Catholic Church by Pope John Paul II on April 30th, 2000, the day that he canonized

Saint Faustina. Come and attend the devotion next Sunday, April 23rd that will include exposition and adoration of the Blessed

Sacrament, praying the divine mercy chaplet and other prayers, and ending with Eucharistic Benediction. The devotion begins at

1:00 pm at St. Ignatius Church.

Our sincere thanks to our Regional Bishop, the Most Rev. Arturo Cepeda for being with us through the Holy Week and Easter

celebrations!

Wishing you all a wonderful week as we continue the celebrations of Easter! Remember we are an Alleluia people!

MEET OUR NEW CONVERTS

JIA JUN CHUA

My name is Jia. I'm from Malaysia and I was raised in a non-Catholic family.

Growing up I only had a faint idea of God and never thought of exploring

faith. My journey to Catholicism started when I went to the church and attend-

ed mass with my then girlfriend, now fiancée, Joanne. After attending a few

masses, I gradually became more and more interested in the Catholic faith.

The sense of peace and calmness that I feel whenever I am at the church drew

me in, as if it is telling me there is something more and I should find out. Last

year I finally decided to sign up for the RCIA program.

My first impression when I joined the RCIA class was that everyone was very welcoming and friendly. I

made new friends and learned about God, Jesus, the Catholic Church, sacraments, prayers and more. The

classes are not the typical academic classes that I initially expected. After the lessons, there are lively dis-

cussions on real life and thought provoking topics. What I find the most helpful are the insights and exam-

ples on how to live as Catholics and apply what we learned to our daily lives.

I'd like to thank Father Naveen, Deacon Joe, and O'Neil for their teachings and guidance, and also to

everyone who shared their experiences during the RCIA classes.

If you're seeking faith, or feeling something is missing in your life, or even if you just want to find out

more about Catholicism, I highly recommend for you to sign up for the RCIA program because the

experience will change and enhance your life.

KELCEY SMITH

My name is Kelcey and for most of my life I have attended the

Church of God Holiness but I have never experienced such unity

with God like I have until I started attending St. Ignatius and the

RCIA meetings.

It has truly been one of the best decisions of my life! I have

learned so much and I look forward to learning even more.

The best part of my journey was feeling closer to God and I antici-

pate what is to come, with great joy!

PARISH NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

SAMANTHA WITHROW

Growing up my parents never agreed on religion - my mother did not believe in orga-

nized religion at all. My parents decided to let me choose my own path early

on. Growing up I always had a strong sense of believing in God, in something bigger

than myself and sought to learn about faith and religion. When I first encountered Ca-

tholicism I was immediately drawn into the love and adoration of the Trinity; it made

so much sense to me.

The church at its core means to me hope, faith, and charity and I pray those are the vir-

tues I hold closest in my life. RCIA has been an incredible journey that has made my

commitment stronger, my spiritual life has matured and I feel very mush at home at my Parish. I couldn't be more

thankful. I look forward to containing this journey of faith with all the wonderful people I have been lucky enough

to meet throughout the process.

CHRISTOPHER GARBUTT

I was born in England in September 1948 and baptized in the Anglican Church. Our

family attended church on a somewhat regular basis until 1957 when my father took a

job in Jamaica and we all moved there. For various reasons, my church attendance in

Jamaica was minimal and, until I met my wife in 1988, except for weddings and funerals,

I rarely saw the inside of a church.

My wife is Catholic and meeting her and asking her to marry me was my first introduction to the Catholic

faith; we were married in the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Montego Bay. Our marriage twenty five

years ago was the start of a journey that took me to where I am now - conversion to a faith that I have grown to

love and respect.

In Jamaica I met two Jesuit priests who greatly impressed me, Father McQuade and Father Walsh. Their kind-

ness, compassionate caring and respect for human dignity were a source of inspiration for me. However it was

here in Cayman, when I started attending mass regularly, that I started to see, feel and understand the power of

the Catholic faith. I felt at home and welcomed and totally comfortable; I felt that I belonged.

I have been greatly impressed with the dedication of the priests I have gotten to know (Father Suresh, Father

Naveen and Father Alex), warmed by the friendly smile of Deacon Joe and strengthened by the commitment to

the faith by the laity (especially Angela Miller and Jean Pereira, who has never failed to ask "when are you

going to take the step?”). My wife, my daughter, my sponsor have all contributed in various ways to my want-

ing to become Catholic.

However, it was my participation in the RCIA program that really gave me the answers that I was seeking.

O'Neil Miller's faith, belief and commitment to ensuring that I fully understood the Catholic faith and its tradi-

tions was what deepened and sealed my decision to convert.

So here I am on a road long-travelled, ready to embark on my greatest journey ever.

PARISH NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

WELMER GOLO

I was born in a Catholic family, learned about faith in Jesus Christ and how to walk with Jesus

Christ. As I grew older, with God’s guidance and blessings, I learned lots of things as a Chris-

tian and put Jesus at the center of my life. When I attended the RCIA my faith in Jesus became

more stronger than I used to and I still keep on praying that the Holy Spirit will always guide me

at all times.

MEET OUR CONFIRMANDI

CHRISTINE MAGYAWI

I am Christine, a Filipina and a Catholic. At first, RCIA was just a "requirement"

for our wedding but my RCIA experience drew me closer to my faith and to

God. I am embracing my Catholicism more than I ever did before. This would

be one of my exceptional experiences in my journey to being fully initiated in

the life of the Church.

JERRICA WOOD

Jerrica Wood (Age 26). I'm a Sustainable Development Officer with the Cay-

man Islands Department of Environment. I was born and raised Catholic, attend-

ing St. Ignatius Catholic school for the second half of my high school career.

Growing up in the Catholic faith, I feel I took a lot of things for granted, not fully

aware of everything happening in the church or mass or why certain things were

done. Unfortunately I did much of what I did out of habit rather than understand-

ing and belief.

My experience with RCIA has jumpstarted or rather re-started my interest in learning about all things

Catholic and growing in my faith. I've always been curious about the church but RCIA gave me the plat-

form to put my questions forward and have them answered in an non-intimidating face-to-face environ-

ment. Attending as a group I got to listen to other people's questions and was able to explore areas of the

faith I hadn't put much thought into. Overall RCIA has left me thirsting for more knowledge and with an

even greater desire to strengthen my relationship with Christ and the church.

I would recommend RCIA to other Catholics looking to revive their faith or learn more - even those who

have already been confirmed. It has been an awesome faith journey thus far, I'm very excited to celebrate

this Easter with a more in-depth understanding of the church.

Excepts of Archbishop Vigneron's Homily at Chrism Mass 2017

(A special message to the RCIA Candidates)

“And so, truly, through baptism what Jesus is by nature, we are by favor, by grace, by the gift of the Holy Spirit. And in more particular focus, that

sonship of Jesus in the flesh was for the sake of mission. That's very clear in today's Gospel. When Jesus uses the prophet Isaiah for his preaching,

he says that it is about his being anointed so that he was sent. It was for a purpose. It was to announce the Good News to the poor and all those who

mourn and need a word from God.

When we in confirmation are confirmed - truth in advertising, right - and we in confirmation are confirmed in our sonship, it is precisely being con-

firmed in a mission. As the second reading says, we are a kingdom of priests. That is, we are made through confirmation, instruments for building

up the kingdom of the Father so that we might offer this world to the Father in sacrifice.

This is our mission. We say very routinely that confirmation is about full initiation. And sometimes that can become a bit trivial. I'm not opposed to

people who are confirmed immediately becoming greeters at church, that's a good thing. But it's too little. We are fully initiated into the church so

that we can take up the church's mission. This is why we are confirmed, chrismated, anointed with the Holy Spirit.

In the church there are no bystanders. Nobody is on the bench. Nobody belongs to the second string. We are all called to share the Good News,

because we share the spirit of Christ and in that spirit He was sent to bring Good News and in that spirit, how are we not also sent to share this

Good News to announce the year of favor?

Of course, I am particularly focusing on this effect of our anointing and confirmation because we are engaged in our effort to Unleash the Gospel.

It's in light of Synod 16 that I particularly raise up this reflection, this liturgical teaching today. We have been praying for a New Pentecost, for

years now. That was the prayer, is for a New Pentecost, give us an outpouring of the Spirit.

Today, I affirm that God is answering this prayer. He is answering it especially sacramentally, mystically, through confirmation. Gonna get corny

again. Chrism is the New Pentecost in a bottle. By chrism, in the sacrament of confirmation, we have the gifts we need to be this band of missionary

disciples. The Holy Spirit is given to us, shared with us, by the Messiah so that we too can do our part and continue His mission. Let us not only

DIVINE MERCY NOVENA

APRIL 14TH-22ND

We encourage all to pray the Novena to Divine Mercy which started at 3:00 pm at St. Ignatius after

the Good Friday Service. Each day of the Novena, the Chaplet of Divine Mercy will be prayed at 3:00

pm in the Adoration Chapel at St. Ignatius, in preparation for Divine Mercy Sunday next weekend,

April 23rd, 2017.

Jesus asked St. Faustina to pray the Chaplets of Mercy and told her that “On each day of the novena you will bring to My

Heart a different group of souls and you will immerse them in this ocean of My mercy... On each day you will beg My

Father, on the strength of My passion, for the graces for these souls. By this novena I will grant every possible grace to

souls." (Diary 1209, 796)

Jesus also said to Sister Faustina: "Say unceasingly this chaplet that I have taught you. Whoever will recite it will re-

ceive great Mercy at the hour of death. Priests will recommend it to sinners as their last hope of salvation. Even if there

were a sinner most hardened, if he were to recite this Chaplet only once, he would receive grace from My Infinite Mer-

cy. I desire that the whole world know My Infinite Mercy. I desire to grant unimaginable graces to those who trust in

My Mercy...." (Diary 687)

The Novena and Chaplet of Mercy are a source of grace. It’s a time of mercy for the whole world.

ST. IGNATIUS/DOROTHY RICE SCHOLARSHIP FUND —

NOW IN OUR 20TH YEAR ASSISTING FAMILIES WITH SCHOOL TUITION!

The St. Ignatius/Dorothy Rice Memorial Scholarship Fund assists families who are not able to afford the full tuition at St.

Ignatius School (which averages about $9500 per year). Each year we help to keep children in our school who otherwise

couldn’t afford a Catholic Education. Over the past 19 years we have assisted over 170 children from about 115 families!

The average child in this programme receives about $200-$300 per month off the fees. In return for the help, the families

actively contribute to the school and parish in a variety of ways (helping with fundraisers, chaperoning school trips, clean-

ing the grounds, assisting at sports days, serving on committees, etc.).

How you can help:

• Donation envelopes are available at the front entrance of St. Ignatius Church or in the church office. Donations can

be dropped in the collection, sent in by mail or dropped off at the church office. If paying by cheque, please make

your donations payable to: ST. IGNATIUS, and in the memo, please indicate “Scholarship Fund”.

• On-line transfers can be done through Butterfield Bank… contact May in the parish office for details.

• Perhaps your company would like to assist with regular contributions OR a one-off donation?

Please consider the Scholarship Fund from time to time when doing your charitable work throughout the year!

Many thanks to all those who have contributed to the fund during recent months and during the past several years!

For further information, please contact Jeremy Rice in the Parish Office or via e-mail: [email protected].
