The Reason for our Hope By Most Rev. Richard W. Smith, Archbishop of Edmonton
Tuesday, February 19, 2019:
Be Carried by the Tide
Over the last year and a half or so, I've been reaching out in a number of different ways to the parishioners of this Archdiocese to find out what's on their minds. I've hosted listening sessions for a variety of groups, as well as town hall gatherings on the occasion of
parish visits. Weaving its way through everything I’m hearing is deep anxiety.
People have been sharing with me their concerns about things happening in the Church, our schools and our hospitals, as well as
about recent trends in our society. They tell me about challenges at home. Young adults have been very open with me about their fears of not measuring up to expectations, or the angst that arises when they are told they need to create themselves. Of course, the economic challenges facing our province right now are foremost in people’s minds, especially when people’s livelihoods are on the
line. These, and other circumstances are causing great and widespread worry.
At all times, but particularly in moments as difficult as these, we need to guard against an especially debilitating form of amnesia:
forgetfulness of the providence of God. The love of God is beyond measure, and Jesus taught us to trust absolutely in the Father’s certain care for our every need (cf Matt 6: 25-34).
In the last while my mind has taken me back to a beautiful teaching of St John Paul II, in a document I number among my
favourites: Novo Millennio Ineunte. In paragraph 38 he says this: “This is the moment of faith, of prayer, of conversation with God, in order to open our hearts to the tide of grace and allow the word of Christ to pass through us in all its power: Duc in altum!” Here is the remedy for our fears. There is at work in the Church and in the world a great “tide of grace.” Our Lord will never abandon us,
and without cease pours out his love to carry us along and provide for our needs. Let’s not swim against the tide by self-reliance or by stubborn persistence in sinful patterns of thought or behaviour. Instead, let’s open our hearts to him, listen attentively to his Word,
confess our sins, and worship Him alone so that we will know the joy of being carried by this tide of grace to true peace and joy.

Respect for Life . . . "Love your enemies, do good to those
who hate you..." We pray that we may
forgive offenses as willingly as our Father
forgives ours, and that instead of hatred, we
will have compassion for those who have
participated in abortion and euthanasia.
We pray for . . . . . . those who are sick, especially Aleyamma Thomas. May they receive the peace & healing of the Lord. . . . the repose of the souls of those who have died, especially Corrina Armsworthy, Martina Moraes, Deomĕdes Grana, Doreen Rozaria, Margaret Boisclair & Carina Palanca. May they rejoice in the kingdom of God.
Teaching from our Holy Father The Pope, as Bishop of Rome and successor of Peter, is the visible and perpetual
foundation of unity among the bishops and among Christ's faithful. It is the Pope's role as
Vicar of Christ and Pastor of the entire Church to guide the community of Christ's faithful,
to safeguard them in the truth, and to confirm his brothers and sisters in the faith.
Dear Brothers and Sisters: In our continuing catechesis on the “Our Father”, we now consider the first step of Christian prayer, which is to enter into the mystery of God’s paternity. To understand how God is Father we naturally think of our own parents; yet this
image needs to be purified, for none of our parents is perfect, and neither are we! When we speak of God as “Father”, then, we must go beyond a merely earthly image, for God’s love is that of our Father who is in heaven. Yet we only experience this total divine love
– in this life – in an imperfect way, for our human love is wounded. Indeed the fragility of human love is captured well by the words of the Prophet Hosea: “Your love is like a morning cloud, like the dew that goes early away” (Hos 6:4). God’s love, on the other hand, is a perfect kind of love; he loves us in a way that none on earth ever can. In the hunger for God’s love that we all feel, we are
not seeking something non-existent, but instead responding to the invitation to know God as Father. So we should not be afraid, for nothing can extinguish his passionate love for us.

In today’s Gospel reading Jesus urges his listeners to “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.” He also offers several examples of putting mercy into action. Listeners can then reason their way into how to put the values of the Gospel reflected in these imperatives into practice in other situations. Good stewards look for opportunities to exercise God’s mercy toward others. They realize that, in doing so, their own experience of God’s mercy not only becomes more profound, but affirms their hope of seeing the Lord face-to-face one day. How have we experienced God’s mercy in our lives? How might our thinking, attitudes, words and actions reflect God’s mercy on someone else today?
