“The Gospel According to Matthew:

A Simple Summary” Sunday by Sunday, through next November, Catholics around the world will be hearing and responding to the Gospel According to Matthew at Mass. At the back of the church, you may pick up a copy of the leaflet (prepared right here at Holy Trinity), which illustrates the unique features of the Second Gospel. Enrich and deepen your faith over the next 49 Sundays from the viewpoint of St. Matthew and his Community of 2,000 years ago.

Advent Reconciliation Monday

Choose to go. You’ll be glad you did! Here’s your chance to make “a good confession” in anticipation of Christmas. Come to confession on Monday, December 19th, when Monsignor and Fr. Gary will be hearing confessions from 4:00 to 8:00 PM. Confessions will be heard, likewise, throughout the city and on Long Island. Do it. As we read in Psalm 119:26 “Confession is good for the soul’ … and you’ll breathe easier too!

Divine Murmurs Many Minds, Many Sources; Same God

In the final analysis, love is not something sentimental we talk about. It is not merely an emotional something. Real love is creative understanding goodwill for all. It is the refusal to defeat any individual at any cost. When you rise to the level of love of its great beauty and power, you seek only to defeat evil systems. You learn to love individuals and seek to defeat the system of evil. Rev. Martin Luther King * * * * * * * *

IMPORTANT! Christmas Day and the following day New Year’s Day and the following day

It is our custom on federal holidays, to close the office and omit the 5:30 Mass. We do this to give our Pastoral Staff time to be with their families. So, there will be NO 5:30 Masses on Dec. 25th and 26th, OR on Jan. 1st and 2nd. Thank you for your understanding.

Happy Birthday, Pope Francis! Accommodating Your Prayer Time

Jorge Bergoglio was born on December 17, 1936 in Flores, Buenos Aires, Argentina. He will observe his 80th birthday next Saturday. Please pray for his health and welfare as the Bishop of Rome and Parish Priest to the World. “Exactly who is Jorge Bergoglio?” a reporter asked him, upon his being elected the 266th pope on March 13, 2013. He thought for a few moments, and then calmly said, “I am a sinner.” VIVA EL PAPA! * * * * * * * *

Old gramps was talking with Marty, our 2nd grader, who is known for his impatience, especially as Christmas approaches. He said to the boy, “Now reconsider: are you waiting for ‘a thing’ or are you waiting for ‘a’ Person?” Makes all the difference in the world (and beyond); no? That is why they call the Third Sunday of Advent Gaudete! [Rejoice!] Your Savior is nearer than you think!

LESSONS & CAROLS December 18 at 7 P.M.

. Next Sunday, December 18 at 7:00 PM, the Holy Trinity Schola Cantorum will present a Festival of Nine Lessons & Carols – a service of Scripture and Song in celebration of the Coming of Our Savior. Patterned after the traditional service of Lessons & Carols offered annually at King’s College, Cambridge, this beautiful celebration will include nine different readings from Holy Scripture by parishioners (children and adults), lay staff and clergy, punctuated by magnificent works of choral music for Advent and Christmas. The pinnacle of the service will be a performance of the Oratorio de Noël by Camille Saint-Saëns, accompanied by a string quartet, harp and organ. There will also be many time-honored congregational Christmas carols. As this is not simply a “concert,” but a religious service, admission is FREE, although donations to the Holy Trinity music program are heartily appreciated. Please mark your calendars and bring your friends and neighbors. It will be a wonderful opportunity for the Parish family and community to come together to celebrate the season. A holiday reception in the Murphy Center will follow. Meet members of our talented choir, led by Music Director Dr. Andrew Yeargin.
