English & Maths GCSE post 16
From August 2014 students who had not reached a good pass in English and/or maths GCSE by age 16 have had to continue to work towards achieving these qualifications (or an approved interim qualification as a stepping stone to GCSE).
Reformed GCSE
• Be assessed mainly by terminal exam
• Be graded 9 (high) to 1 (low), with a C being 4/5. Performance below a 1 will be unclassified – ie a U.
• Only be tiered if it can’t be avoided - in maths and sciences, for example: foundation tier 5 to 1; higher tier 9 to 4

Towards Assessment without Levels
• Starting point (at least until current Y5 arrive here): KS2 test result – fine level average of English & maths
• Finish point: Expected A8 score
• These are two different scales, with much changing in the calculation between the two
