Monique is a fantastically talented and committed young lady. Her ambition is to become an athlete and run for her country.Currently aged 13 she is running the 100 metres in 13 seconds. For her year this is an excellent time. She has run for the London Borough of Hounslow coming fourth in the London Youth Games, and has also been on trial for Middlesex. She has won the event for Chiswick at the Borough Athletics and Indoor Athletics events.

'I train three times a week,' says Monique 'jogging, sprinting and doing stretches. I belong to Lynford Christie’s Athletics club. My role models are Jessica Ennis, Usain Bolt and Mo Farah. I know Mo Farah is not a sprinter but he is a very outgoing and en-gaging person!'

We wish Monique all the best in the fu-ture and hope London 2012 inspires her to achieve even more.

Free Olympic Tickets for You!

Yes, you heard correctly.

Last Thursday 2nd February, Boris John-son (Mayor of London) and Lord Seb Coe (Chief of the London Olympic Bid and ex gold medallist) visited the school to an-nounce a new programme which gives sec-ondary school children a free opportunity to visit the Olympic or Paralympic games.

We spoke to Lord Coe afterwards and asked him what kind of legacy the Olym-pics would leave London with, to which he replied that the Games would ‘leave London with a lot of new facilities’. When asked who would be an ideal Olympian or other sportsperson for young people to have as a role model, he said that ‘everyone is a role model’, going on to explain that all sportsmen and women had followings and were role models in different people’s eyes.

Photographs were then taken outside, with students, the PE department and Mary Ma-cleod, the local MP, who was also present.

Before he left, Alfie Howell and I were able to ask Boris Johnson a couple of questions. Firstly, what was he hoping the Olympics would do for London’s image around the world? He said that they were hoping a million people would come to London for the Games, with hundreds more millions watching it on TV and seeing how great London can be. People around the world will be watching the opening ceremony and London will be able to show itself at its best. He also mentioned the Olympics being ‘great leverage for investment in the city. The Games will be great for Lon-don and everyone will be entering into an Olympic spirit.'

My final question to him was about what Olympic event he would most like to com-pete in. His response was that he would like to do the 100 metre sprint!

Visit to Chiswick School continued..

125,000 kids from across the whole of London will be in with the chance of going to see an event from Volleyball to Horse Riding or even the 100m final. When Boris announced that the school would be receiv-ing 158 tickets, far off most guesses of 10 and 25, a huge applause echoed around the hall. Journalists and photographers were also there to catch this all for local newspa-pers and even national television.

Boris even managed to sneak in a nifty joke during the announcement, exclaim-ing ‘Don’t let your parents worry that these tickets are all being purchased with tax payers’ money, it’s all being paid for by sponsorship!’ Furthermore, Mr Ryan added to the announcement, saying ‘To have this many tickets is absolutely fantastic.’ Lord Coe seemed very adamant that by giving away these tickets, more young people will become interested in sport and concluded that the Olympic committee were striving to ‘get as many young people active as pos-sible.’

To round up the event, Grace Lee, Year 10, said ‘It’s fantastic that so many students have been given the chance to go to the Olympics and experience such an exciting event first-hand.’

Let’s hope you get a ticket!
