VIEWING ACTIVITIES

* Show 00:16 - 02:10 straight through for context. Show segment 01:12 - 01:40 again. Ask students to listen for the word "más" and count how many times they hear it.

PRE-VIEWING ACTIVITIES

* Have a number of objects available for comparison, such as a book and a dictionary. Hold up the book and say, "Esto es grande." Show the dictionary and say, "Pero este es más grande." To present the new word "alto" choose two students, one taller than the other, and ask them to come up front. Indicate the first student and say, "Tú eres alto / alta." Look at the other one and say, "Pero tú eres más alto / alta." Do this with as many objects and people as you can.

* Assemble a collection of 7 objects, such as stuffed animals. Describe all 7 using ordinal numbers, for example, "El primero es grande. El segundo es más grande. El tercero es pequeño. El cuarto es alto. El quinto es blanco. El sexto es negro. Es séptimo es hermoso."

The next step is to create sentences using ordinal numbers, such as, "Mercurio es el primero, Venus es el segundo, etc.," and so forth. Give extra credit to those who can say the order of the solar system in Spanish.

Students may also think of their own words, or the teacher can place adjective vocabulary cards on the board to help them. After a pair have finished, the teacher can say, "¡Applaudan!" Sum up by saying: "La primera (el primero) es fuerte, y la segunda (el segundo) es más fuerte."

* Line eight students up in front of the board, and over their heads write the numbers 1 through 8. Ask the class, "¿Quién es el primero / el segundo / etc.?" and so forth.

* "Shower Curtain Planets." This activity may tie in nicely with the study of the solar system. Procure a white shower curtain liner. Using a marker, draw the sun in one corner. Draw nine curved orbit lines radiating away from the sun. Draw a planet in each of the orbit lines. Place the curtain on the floor, and place a card printed with the planet's name near each planet. Say the planet's name as you put down the cards: "Mercurio", "Venus", "Tierra", "Marte", "Júpiter", "Saturno", "Urano" and "Neptuno".

* Use Activity Sheets.

* Comparison Skits. Put students in pairs to do comparisons. One way to do this, is to have pairs draw an adjective from a box. Once the word is drawn, they have a minute to come up with a plan. For example, if the word is "fuerte", the action might go something like this:

Student 1: "Yo soy fuerte." (picks up a book)Student 2: "Yo soy más fuerte." (lifts a chair)

* Show 01:12 - 02:10 again, and using the pause button, freeze the scene after Norman speaks. Ask students to repeat.

POST-VIEWING ACTIVITIES* Ask students to report the descriptive words they heard in these scenes. Discuss the six Sylvias and have the students describe them. "La primera es grande. La segunda es más grande, etc." Show 01:40 - 02:10 again to verify size and shape.
