Horniman Primary School Newsleer Dear Parents and Carers, It has been a very busy week. On Monday, the school held a minute silence to remember those who lost their lives during the First World War as well as in more recent conflicts. Following on from that, Tuesday’s assembly explored why it is important to remember, who we are remembering and how we show that we remember. We looked at how most of us have had family or know of someone who either fought in World War I or II or supported in some way. ‘Change Starts With Us’ was the theme of anti-bullying Week. KS2 members of the Behaviour Committee led a lesson in their classes and supported KS1 children to deliver lessons to their peers. Today they helped conclude the week with a whole school assembly. The Behaviour Committee will continue to focus on Anti-bullying through- out the year, looking at how the whole school community can reduce bullying and ensure that we all know what to do when dealing with bullying. As part of anti-bullying week, we also celebrated World Kindness Day on Wednesday. The Health and Well-being Committee created an interactive display for pupils and staff to share acts of kindness that they had received or made. They also instigated a ‘Secret Friend’ activity: Children drew a random name from a hat and their task for the day was to be a ‘Secret Friend’ to that person. Friendship bracelets for all children from year 1 up were given out at the end of the day as a reminder of the importance of kindness. This week, Holly and Pear classes visited Shrek Adventure where they experienced a fictional world first hand by becoming the central characters in a live adventure. They also took part in a workshop where they reflected on their encounter with characters such as Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty and the role they played within story structure, plot and setting. Birch class visited the British Library for an exhibition about rebels in literature. They explored characteristics of these rebels and why sometimes it’s okay to break the rules. Children had the opportunity to dress up as story char- acters and look at pop up books. Last Friday Elder class ran a pop up bakery. They made 5 different types of bread and sold them after school. They made £40 profit which the class will use to choose new books for the classroom. Thank you to all those who sup- ported this enterprise project and we hope you enjoyed the bread. Look out for children from Elder class on Bake Off in the future! A number of parents have been entering the school building, despite adults not being permitted inside without regis- tering first at the office. SLT will be monitoring this and I hope you will understand that these measures are to safe- guard your children whilst they are at school. Can I remind parents to make sure all items of clothing are named, particularly jumpers and coats which children often remove when they are in different parts of the school. Children tend to forget taking these items off; however, if they are named, it is very quick and easy to reunite them with their owners. We do have a considerable amount of clothing in our lost property and this would help to alleviate this. Winter Wonderland will soon be upon us, Friday 13 th December, and planning has already started. If you would like to be involved in the planning, please do come along to the meeting on 22 nd November at 9.30am (straight after parent workshop) in the community room at school. This morning was the second meeting of the Toilet Refurb Project working group who are developing design ideas for our upstairs toilets. Yr 5 and 6 children in our Interiors, Eco and Wellbeing Committees are working to gather ideas around colours and textures that could be used. Catherine is obtaining quotes, and once we have a rough total, fundraising will begin in earnest with the PTA, including a fundraising barometer in the school Reception area - so watch this space! As mentioned in last week’s Newsletter, our annual Parent Survey has gone live today. Please do take time to re- spond. Dear Parents and Carers,

It has been a very busy week.

Thursday 19th December—Last day of term

This week, although we have had a lot of illness within the school, attendance has remained above average at 97.34% and year to date the school stands at 97.15%. An amazing effort by Elder this week and re-ceive a star on the board for 100% attend-ance as well as a ball in their reward jar. Congratulations!!! Although the local area has had lots of road-works and traffic to contend with this week, as a school we achieved a weekly punctuali-ty of 98.05%. Thank you all. From looking at TFL plans it looks like most of the works complete by 15th November so travel next week should be easier. Steph

Year 3 Project Steve McQueen’s Year 3 Project is currently on display at Tate Britain from November 2019 until May 2020. Our school’s photographs are located in section 16.

The exhibition spans 24 sections that are marked clock-wise from the entrance.

Girls’ Football Team

One of our neighbours who lives on the corner of Ring-more Rise and Horniman Drive was concerned that the children are walking on and moving the stones at the top of the road that surround the grass area. These

stones are very old and we are kindly asking your chil-dren not to disturb or move them. Thank you!

Our former Pupil Zachery Robinson made his professional football debut on Wednesday for AFC Wimbledon.

Well done Zach, Horniman is proud of you!!

Help Needed: Donations of clothes size 5/6, 6/7 is needed. If you have any unwanted underwear, socks, tights, T-shirts or trousers, please bring them to the

school office. Your help is appreciated!
