The Language of Math

There are many ways that parents

and teachers can encourage devel-

opment of students ‘pre-math’

skills, in their early years.

*Demonstrate early math concepts

such as ‘longer’, ‘shorter’, ‘few’,

‘many’ ‘add’ or ‘subtract’ by using

pictures or objects. Compare and

manipulate groups of items using

these terms.

*When cooking or during sand and

water play using real measuring

cups and spoons to demonstrate and

compare the amounts containers can

hold and introduce terms like ‘full’

and ‘empty’, ‘more’ and ‘less’.

*Help children to classify and sort

household items and classroom

objects into groups. Match accord-

ing to common features and count

the number of items in each group.

Introduce ‘greater than’ and ‘less

than’ by comparing the numbers of

items in each group. Order objects

from biggest to smallest.

*Point out numbers in every day life

and count as many things as possi-

ble - even the number of green

beans on your plate or apples in a

bowl.

*As students learn about time, math

concepts can be developed. Use a

timer initially to help children to un-

derstand and estimate the passage of

time for different activities (e.g., tidy-

ing up their room, the length of a TV

show). Teach children to talk about

time once they have developed this

understanding.

Consider that at least one-third of all

school aged children have language

learning difficulties that make it diffi-

cult for them to learn in school.

Many students with language disor-

ders experience difficulty learning

math. Concerns with memory effect

the ability to retain and recall basic

math facts and formulas. Weaknesses

in vocabulary development and un-

derstanding word definitions hamper

the ability to learn specific math ter-

minology or solve word problems.

Difficulty attending and following

multi-step directions makes it impos-

sible to perform computations and

document the steps used to solve a

math question.

Many of the strategies parents and

teachers use to support students who

have difficulty reading and writing

Immunizations

Immunization begins in early infancy and

continues throughout life. Your child will

receive the majority of his or her immun-

izations between the ages of two months

and six years of age.

Please take a moment to check your

child’s Immunization Record (yellow card)

to be sure his or her immunizations are up-

to-date. Immunizations work best when

given on time.

For more information on childhood immun-

ization, including the immunization sched-

ule, speak with your doctor or visit

www.health.gov.on.ca.

If you have further questions, please call the Vaccine Preventable Disease Program at Niagara Region Public Health at 905-688-8248 or 1-888-505-6074 ext. 7425 to speak to a public health nurse.

Keep a personal dictionary of math

terms and formulas for the student

to refer to after the concepts and

vocabulary have been introduced.

Chunk information and take one

step at a time. Use graphic organiz-

ers (e.g., first, then, next, last) so

students have a means of charting

the steps in math problems, in a

clear and organized manner.

Encourage students to work through

a math problem verbally first, and

then help them to write out the an-

swer, if spelling or written work is a

concern.

When working with ver-

bal problems, provide

Severe Food Allergy

There are students that attend our school that suffer from a severe food allergy which can

cause an anaphylactic reaction. An anaphylactic reaction is an allergic reaction so severe that

in some cases, it can be life-threatening. These children are allergic to NUTS and NUT

RELATED products. Prevention is the best approach. Therefore, we ask your co-operation

in not sending any snacks or lunches containing any nut products with your child.

We are also instituting other measures to create an appropriate learning environment. We are asking that all food

be eaten in the classroom(s) or designated areas, not outside or on the buses. We encourage students not to

share snacks with others.

Book Nook: Pictures’ worth a 1000 words!

We’re on the web

Children love pictures. Both fiction and non-fiction books are filled with beautiful artwork!

The pictures make books visually interesting and bring added meaning to the text.

Try looking at the pictures in a book before reading. Use the pictures to activate your

child’s schema about the topic. Try making predictions based on the picture walk. When you

are reading a book with your child take time to examine the artwork. Mem Fox explains that

“We mustn’t skip over them. The pictures tell a thousand words and help unlock the action of

a story..... The younger the child, the more we’ll be chatting together about the pictures, and it

will be the child more often than not who’ll start the discussion.” Comprehension improves

when we look at and talk about the pictures. The oral explorations of pictures in both fiction

and non-fiction texts allows the opportunity to think about the book. Early readers also ben-

efit from using pictures to help them check the meaning of unknown words. The artwork in

non-fiction texts such as maps and labelled diagrams often reinforces the ideas presented in

writing. After reading a book your child can use the pictures to retell a story or summarize

important information that they have learned.

See the world from your child’s eyes and enjoy the pictures...Happy Reading!
