Conflicting Materials
Lastly,anyhomeschoolparentwillbefacedwiththedilemmaofwhattodowhenyoucomeacrossmaterialinthecurriculumyoudon’tlikeordisagreewith.Whilenocurriculumwilleverbeabletosatisfyallthebeliefs,opinionsorvaluesheldbyeachfamily,thereareseveralapproachesthatyoucantakeinthesesituations.
Oneapproachistojustignoreorskipoverthematerialinquestion.Anothersuggestionwouldbetousethisasanopportunityforaspecialteachablemoment.Reviewthematerialwithyourchild.Checkiftheycandiscernwhatyousee.Discusswhyyoumaytakeexceptiontothematerial,ideaorvaluepresented.Taketheopportunitytosharethediversityofthought/opinionintheworldandtheneedtobediscerningofprinciplesandideasthatmaychallengeyours.
Useitasanopportunitytoaffirmtheideas,principlesandvaluesyoufindimportant,whileatthesametimeprovidinganopportunitytoseehowtodealwithdifferingonesandstillmaintainyourcoreconvictions.Youcanteachthemmuchbyreasonablyconfrontingideasthatdifferfromyours.
Thereisadefinitebalancebetweenhavingthefreedomthathomeschoolbrings,andtheresponsibilityyouassumeineducatingyourchild.Thegoodnewsisthatmostfamiliesfindthatbalanceanditworksforthem.
