What are the SATs?

• SATs is a term used to refer to End of Key Stage 2 Assessments.

• It lasts for four days beginning on Monday 11th

May 2020 and ending on Thursday 14th May 2020.

What paper will my child sit on each day?

Children will sit the following SATs papers:

Monday 11th May 2020: Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Paper 1Monday 11th May 2020: Grammar, Punctuation Paper 2

Tuesday 12th May 2020: Reading Paper

Wednesday 13th May 2020: Maths Paper 1 (Arithmetic)Wednesday 13th May 2020: Maths Paper 2 (Reasoning)

Thursday 14th May 2020: Maths Paper 3 (Reasoning)

How do the tests take place?

• The tests will all take place in normal school time, under test conditions.

• Pupils will not be allowed to talk to each other during the tests.

• The completed papers are sent away to be marked externally.

• Results are returned to school in July.

• The tests vary in length but last no longer than 60 minutes:- Reading: 60 minutes- Grammar, Punctuation & Vocabulary: 45 minutes- Spelling: 15 minutes- Arithmetic: 30 minutes- Mathematical Reasoning: 2 papers of 40 minutes each.

Scaled Scores

What is meant by ‘scaled scores’?

It is planned that 100 will always represent the ‘national standard’.

Each pupil’s raw test score will therefore be converted into a score on the scale, either at, above or below 100.

Using the scaled score, the lowest a child can score is 80, with the highest being 120.

A child who achieves the ‘national standard’ (a score of 100) will be judged to have demonstrated sufficient knowledge in the areas assessed by the tests.

Each pupil receives:• a raw score (number of raw marks awarded)• a scaled score in each tested subject• confirmation of whether or not they attained the national standard.

What about writing?

Writing is assessed using evidence collected by the school throughout the year, so there is no Year 6 SATs writing test.

The Reading Paper

• The reading test consists of a single test paper with three unrelated reading texts. Children are given 60 minutes in total, which includes reading the texts and answering the questions.

• A total of 50 marks are available.

• Questions are designed to assess the comprehension and understanding of a child’s reading.

• During the reading paper, a child’s inference and deduction skills are thoroughly tested. They will also be expected to answer questions on authorial choices: explaining why an author has chosen to use particular vocabulary, grammar and text features.

• Some questions are multiple choice or selected response; others require short answers and some require an extended response or explanation.

Grammar, Spelling and punctuation

• A spelling test is administered containing 20 words, which lasts approximately 15 minutes.

• A separate test is given on grammar, punctuation and vocabulary.

• This test lasts for 45 minutes and requires short answer questions including some multiple choice.

• Marks for these two tests are added together to give a total for grammar, punctuation and spelling.

The Maths Test• There are three tests: one arithmetic paper and two reasoning

papers. • Paper 1 (arithmetic) lasts 30 minutes and assesses pupils’

confidence using methods of calculation as well as fractions, decimals and percentages. It covers curriculum content from all of KS2.

• Papers 2 & 3 (reasoning) last 40 minutes each and focus on problem solving, fluency and applying mathematical reasoning.

• Questions cover the following areas:- Number and place value - Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division (calculations)- Geometry – properties of shapes - Geometry – position and direction - Statistics - Measurement- Algebra- Ratio and proportion- Fractions, decimals and percentages.

• Questions will increase in difficulty as the paper progresses

Breakfast at Bierton!Monday 11th- Thursday 14th May

The aim is for our Year 6 children to have a calm and relaxing start to theday, enjoying breakfast and listening to the latest tunes with theirfriends.

We wish to minimise any pressure that the children are feeling on themorning of each test and encourage them to eat and chat with theirfriends.

We would be grateful if the children could arrive at 8.15am and enterthrough the hall doors. There is no charge for this activity.
