Top 3
Top 3 things we have asked students to focus on this week:
1. “The more reflective you are, the more effective you are.” Hall and Simoral. To make your tutor meeting really worthwhile, and help you get ready for the start of a new academic year, we want you to complete a short survey reflecting on your year. This will help you and your tutor identify what is needed to support you when we return after summer.
2. Be vigilant in checking your email and Homework4 for notifications on when live class sessions on Teams will occur. Accept the invite through the email or
by clicking the RSVP button in the Teams Calendar entry.
3. Nearly there! It is not long now until we break up for Summer and we are so proud of how well you have all adapted and kept motivated in these trying times. Keep up the good work over the next few weeks before your well-deserved break.
Dates for your diary:
• w/c 29 June – Progress checks to take place • Monday 6 July – Year 11 Bridging Material set 1 to be uploaded to Showbie. Further information can be

Information
Tutor Review Meetings w/c 13 July
These meetings will take place in the last week of term and is chance for your child and their Tutor to reflect on their year at HGS, including the period of school closure and remote learning, recognise your successes, as well as looking at how to make the best possible start to the new academic year.
To help with the meeting your child will need to complete a short survey by 3.30pm on Wednesday 8th July. The statements in the survey will be based on the whole year, including the period of school closure. We recommend that the survey is completed after the assembly on Monday 6th July, when we will explain more about the meeting itself. They will be sent details of how to do this after the assembly.
Once they have completed the survey it will be shared with their Form Tutor to help with the meeting.
Form Tutors will contact students to advise the date and time of this Tutor Review meeting, students will be emailed the link to the survey on Monday.
Year 11 students: information re Year 12 Induction (Monday 6 July)
Monday 6 July is the virtual induction day into the Sixth Form. The day includes a tour around Sixth Form as well as key information and messages from the Sixth Form team, subject teachers, and students. You will also get to meet your form tutor and be provided with important information regarding your next set of Bridging Materials.
This information will be live on the website on Monday. https://www.harrogategrammar.co.uk/sixth-form/induction-day/
Class Question and Answer Sessions on Teams
Live class question and answer sessions are now well underway. We have had really good feedback from teachers and students to this way of working. Students should check their emails regularly to see when a class question and answer session on Teams will occur. Students are expected to attend each session, they should accept the invite, or communicate with their teacher through Showbie if there is a
genuine reason why they cannot attend.
During the session, students will use software that allows them to answer questions given by their teacher. Only their teacher will be able to see what they have written. They are not expected to get everything right, so they should not worry about sharing their thinking! Some teachers are now using ClassKick to see student contributions, whilst others continue to use Whiteboard.fi. A short guide on how Whiteboard.fi works can be found here. https://youtu.be/k5ttA4q7pZ4 (Dr Robson)
Educake: quizzing software
The quizzing software Educake, used extensively by the Science faculty for students in Years 7 - 10, have released an app. This can be downloaded from the App Store and once accessed, will mean there is no need to keep entering the username and password. We would like all students to download this app as an easier way to access Educake. Students can not only complete teacher made quizzes, but also set their own quizzes to review any topic(s) of their choosing.
Students should email their Science teacher if they have any problems logging in. (Dr Robson)

Recording Student Illness
If your child is unable to complete work due to illness, we ask that you contact your child's Year Manager on that day. They will then inform their teachers so that they know why the work has not been completed and not expect work.

Online education resources for home learning update
Updated guidance on keeping children safe online (including information on apps to help children stay safe online)
Problems accessing Showbie Contact your Form Tutor
Showbie Access We have had a small number of students who have been unexpectantly logged out of their Showbie accounts. If this occurs to your child, please tell them to send an email to their tutor, requesting a reminder of the username and a password reset. This information will allow access back in to the app and to the website.
Several of our parents have found it useful to discuss with other parents how to support their child(ren) learning at home. The PTA Facebook page is a useful form to talk to other parents.
Student Resources for Learning at Home

Supporting children and young people online
As our students continue to work online at home it is important that they do this in a safe way. One of the easiest ways to do this is by setting age-appropriate parental controls on digital devices and use internet filters to block malicious websites. These are usually free, but often need to be turned on.
There are a number of useful resources which can support parents and carers to keep their children safe online:
Advice from the National Crime Agency to stay safe online
Website: Thinkyouknow
Provides age-specific online safety checklists, guides on how to set parental controls on a range of devices, and a host of practical tips to help children get the most out of their digital world.
Website: Internet matters
A collaboration between ParentZone and the NCA providing support and guidance for parents from leading experts and organisations
Website: Parent info
Support for parents and carers to keep their children safe online, including tips to keep primary aged children safe online.
Website: LGfL
Support for parents and carers from the NSPCC, including a guide to social networks, apps and games
Website: Net-aware
Offers a toolkit to support parents and carers of children of any age to start discussions about their online life, to set boundaries around online behaviour and technology use, and to find out where to get more help and support.
Website: Childnet
Has advice for parents and carers to keep children safe from online radicalisation
Website: Let’s Talk About It
Has tips, advice, guides and other resources to help keep children safe online, including parental controls offered by home internet providers and safety tools on social networks and other online services.

Wellbeing
Supporting children and young people’s wellbeing
This is a difficult time for everyone and one of the ways COVID-19 can have an effect is on our mental health and wellbeing. Public Health England have produced guidance on how parents and carers can look after the mental
health and wellbeing of their children. This includes advice on: 1. Looking after your own mental health
2. Helping children and young people cope with stress
3. How children and young people of different ages may react
4. Bullying
5. Money worries
6. Where to get further support
This can be accessed here.
We would also like to remind you and your child of some of the local and national services available to them. These are:
KOOTH - Kooth.com is an online counselling, advice and support service for young people aged 11-18 within the local
area. It provides a safe, secure means of accessing help via the internet from professional team of counsellors.
BUZZ US - Compass BUZZ offers a confidential text messaging service to young people aged 11-18 across North Yorkshire. The service was named in conjunction with young people and is called BUZZ
US. By texting the service on 07520 631168 you will be able to receive confidential advice, support and signposting from a wellbeing worker within one working day via text.
JustB have also set up a helpline if you would like to talk. They have a helpline for children, young people and adults across the Harrogate District who may be struggling or feeling anxious about the COVID-19 virus.

Progression
Year 12 Progression
Had we been in school, these next few weeks would be spent focusing on planning for life beyond HGS. We still intend to offer all the support you would ordinarily have received, albeit in a slightly different way this year. We know some of you are feeling a little overwhelmed and unsure of how and where to start. Please do not worry, we have provided all the information you need on our website. You just need to visit https://www.harrogategrammar.co.uk/sixth-form/progression/ and read through the
information. We explain what you need to do, when and why. We have provided all the information you need to get
started so please make sure you read through the advice.
Throughout week beginning 13th July, you will be having meetings with your tutors with a focus on progression. You will find that meeting more useful if you have done some work on your progression tasks. It is a great opportunity to speak to your tutor again and get any help you need from them as well as talk through your options and what you are thinking about.
Before the end of term, we would like you to have completed various steps towards your UCAS application, as follows:
• Register on UCAS Apply • Complete the Personal, Education and Employment sections on UCAS Apply • Explore Unifrog to help narrow down your choices (you can apply to five institutions)
• Explore the personal statement tool on Unifrog • Draft your personal statement on Unifrog
Over the summer we would like you to:
• Try to finalise your personal statement – this is particularly crucial for Oxbridge, Medical and Veterinary courses
• Finalise your course selection, if you know what you wish to study • Continue to explore the courses and other opportunities.
To access a document outlining all the upcoming deadlines click here. Any questions, then please ask a member of the Sixth Form Team. For careers advice email Mrs Tunstall, for UCAS queries email Dr Gregson, for Oxbridge advice email Dr Compton and for advice on medic applications email Mrs
Winters. Lots of useful advice and information can also be found at UCAS.com.
What Course Should I do?
If you are considering further study, the first step in your research is to decide which course or courses interest you most. UCAS have put together lots of information on various subject areas, what courses are available, what it is like to study that subject and lots of facts about each area. It is worth having a read through the information. Click here to see what courses are available based on the subjects you are currently studying. Click here to look for subject areas which interest you.
Parent Bulletin Week Beginning: Monday 6 July 2020 WEEK B
Where Should I Study?
Once you have a better idea of what you would like to study, you can start to think about where you would like to study that course. Different universities have different strengths.
You need to think about what is most important to you, i.e. how the course at one university ranks for various factors compared to others, the entry requirements, the type of place (campus vs city), how far you want to be from home, what the university offers by way of accommodation, facilities, social scene, enrichment etc.
Click here to access a useful comparison tool from discoveruni.gov.uk.
Click here to access a league table comparison tool from The Complete University Guide (be careful to look at the category of judgement) Once you have narrowed down your options, it is time to start to attend virtual open days to get a feel for the different courses and places.
Upcoming University Open Days
One advantage to lockdown, is that all the universities are offering virtual open days. Whilst you cannot visit in person, you can visit a lot more places without even leaving the house. Make the most of this opportunity and join in as many events as you can. Here is a list of just some of the events happening this weekend but there are open days scheduled for nearly every day!

pick your College?’ As well as subject Q&A sessions, there is also a Student Support webinar (a chance to find out more about the mental wellbeing and disabilities support on offer at Cambridge) as well as a Music Q&A where student helpers will be speaking about the opportunities to get involved in music at Cambridge, regardless of whether you want to study
