WALTER SCOTT ASKS …

Helen MirrenThe actress, 67, stars opposite Anthony Hopkins as Alfred Hitchcock’s wife, Alma, in Hitchcock, now in theaters.

What was the most surprising thing you learned about

Mrs. Hitchcock? I didn’t know how important her role was in the creation of Hitchcock’s movies. She was very con-tent to take a backseat and not be recognized.

Did you relate to her on a personal level since you’re also

married to a director, Taylor Hackford? No, absolutely not. Unlike Alma, I have my own career. Taylor and I give each other advice if it’s asked, but otherwise we leave each other free to do what we want.

You famously played Queen Elizabeth II. What’s your take

on the royal family today? We’re lucky to have such a true person as Kate Middleton. She’s exactly what the monar-chy needs—an ordinary girl. She’s going to be terrifi c.

What’s your secret to looking so fi t? I live in a permanent state of guilt about the fact that I should be exercising, but I can’t be bothered. In general, I just try to stand up straight!

THE DUST BOWL Ken Burns’s fascinating four-hour

documentary, now on DVD, recounts

the near destruction of the Great

Plains farmlands—the breadbasket

of America—in the 1930s. Through

archival material and eyewitness

accounts, it shows how drought and

poor farming practices turned wheat

storms that choked everything in their

path. It’s also a remarkable portrait of

survival and perseverance, with les-

sons we can all take to heart today.

Need a shirt with my face on it?” Taylor Swift is

doing some Saturday afternoon shopping when she

spots the tee, a cherry-red number that immedi-

ately takes her back to a much simpler time. “That’s

from, like, my 2006 tour,” she says, running her fi ngers over its gently

worn cotton. “That’s … awesome.”

The 22-year-old superstar loves pretty much everything about this

particular Nashville shop, which sells vintage clothing, musical instru-

ments, and a quirkily curated selection of knickknacks out of a house

with a wraparound porch where customers can take a break from brows-

ing to sit for a spell. And with Christmas approaching, it seems like a

promising place to start looking for presents. “I like to get gifts that

remind people I know them,” she says. “[Things] that I have a specifi c

reason for giving them. I start thinking about it really far in advance.”

In the back room, two men’s sweaters catch her eye. “This would be

baggy,” Swift says, holding up a cream, cable-knit V-neck—but she

doesn’t seem to be shopping for a guy. “I’d wear it kind of off the shoulder.”

Who says a girl can’t holiday-gift herself? She certainly deserves it.

Swift’s fourth album, Red, is a blockbuster that moved more than

1 million copies its fi rst week, just as her 2010 album, Speak Now, did,

making her the fi rst female artist in Nielsen SoundScan history to hit

that staggering mark more than once. Released last month, the boldly

personal Red earned the six-time Grammy winner some of her best

reviews yet, thanks to its lyrical maturity and ambitious forays into

everything from earworm pop (“We are Never Ever Getting Back

Together”) to U2-esque arena rock (“State of Grace”). Swift is no

longer the wide-eyed country cutie pictured on that 2006 tour T-shirt; she’s a savvy young woman who sees no reason to be boxed in by any genre. “You have to force yourself,” she says, “to evolve.”

And how. The onetime outsider—a songwrit-ing savant bullied by mean girls in junior high and overlooked by the guys she crushed on—has evolved into the ultimate insider, an enter-tainer Forbes ranked as the highest-paid celeb under 30 this year, with earnings of $57 million. She has more than 20 million Twitter followers, CoverGirl-endorsed beauty, A-list BFFs (Emma Stone and Selena Gomez), a couple of hit movies (Valentine’s Day and Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax), and a growing list of high-profi le ex-boyfriends (includ-ing actors Taylor Lautner and Jake Gyllenhaal, musicians Joe Jonas and John Mayer, and, as breathlessly documented in the tabloids earlier this year, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s 18-year-old son, Conor). A performer who takes pride in being a role model, she will be honored next month by the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Jus-tice & Human Rights for her commitment to social change, including advocacy against bullying and support for arts education and disaster relief.

So why can’t Swift shake the fear that she’ll somehow mess it all up? “I’m scared of this whole thing backfi ring,” she says. “Or chewing me up and spitting me out, and all of a sudden, I don’t love it anymore.”

She worries so much that, naturally, she wrote a song about it. “The Lucky One,” a track from Red, tells the story of a performer who decides to walk away from stardom (“Chose the Rose Garden over Madison Square”). If someday it all

gets to be too much, could Swift do the same? She doesn’t yet have an answer for that, but she does know she puts “a crazy amount of pressure” on herself to keep topping her own achievements. “My head’s never really quiet,” she says. “The only time I can get it to turn off is if I watch CSIor Law & Order, where I have to follow the crime. If I can’t turn my head off during that, I know I’ve really got a problem.”

“Nobody puts more pressure on Taylor than Taylor herself—in a good way,” says Liz Rose, who has cowritten a number of songs with Swift, including the Grammy-winning “White Horse” and “All Too Well” from Red. “As amazing as she is now, she was that amazing at 14,” Rose adds. “She’s just a force. There are emotions you don’t feel at 14 that you feel at 22, and her lyrics have grown with her.”

Despite writing about it so prolifically, Swift claims not to know much about love. “I tend

to think things are love and then look back and reevaluate,” she says. How many times has she been in love? “I know how many people I’ve said ‘I love you’ to,” she says. “I could probably count it up, but I don’t feel like it.

“Part of me feels you can’t say you were truly in love if it didn’t last,” she adds. “If I end up getting married and having kids, that’s when I’ll know it’s real—because it lasted.”

Trying to fi gure out which of Swift’s songs are about which of her relationships has become a pop culture pastime. “When the guessing game starts, it’s really funny,” says the star, who always declines to name names (although Gyllenhaal is widely believed to be Red ’s central, fiery inspiration). “It’s like, off to the races! I sit back and laugh and think, ‘They’ll never know.’ ”

Speculation aside, Swift’s songs confi rm that she has repeatedly felt burned. Blame it on the bad boys she often seems drawn to. “There’s a really interesting charisma involved,” she says of the allure. “They usually have a lot to say, and even if they don’t, they know how to look at you to say it all. I think every girl’s dream is to fi nd a bad boy at the right time, when he wants to not be bad anymore.”

She’s the fi rst to admit that her romances tend to develop—and end—rather swiftly. “I don’t think there’s an option for me to fall in love slowly, or at medium speed. I either do or I don’t,” says the chart topper, who calculates that her longest relationship to date lasted six months. “I don’t think it through, really, which is a good thing and a bad thing. You don’t look before you leap, which is like, ‘Yay, this is awesome! Let’s not think

twice!’ And then you’re like, ‘We used to be flying. Now we’re falling.

What’s happening?’ ” It comes with the territory when life moves as fast as it does for her, she adds. “I’m never in the same place for more than, like, three

days at a time. Things can change from one minute to the next.”

Not everything happens at warp speed, though: “I don’t get

over people fast,” she says. Nor does she expect to settle down any-time soon. “People think I want to

get married really young—I don’t know why. I’m a romantic person, but that

doesn’t mean I want to miss out on being in my young 20s.”

That includes making time for fun and snacks while writing songs.

HEART’S DESIRES Le , a 3-year-old Swi celebrating Christmas. Right, she and her summer beau, Conor Kennedy, ignited a paparazzi frenzy. “The beginnings and endings of relationships inspire me the most,” she says.

According to British musician Ed Sheeran, who cowrote Red ’s “Everything Has Changed” with Swift, a trampoline was central to the creative process. “We would take breaks in between lines of the song to bounce around and think of more ideas,” he recalls. “Afterward she baked an apple pie. It was wicked.”

For the most part, Swift has handled her fi rst six years in the spotlight with a preternatural grace. In August, though, she hit

a rare public relations speed bump—that Kennedy wedding incident, which she won’t discuss (“It’s been talked about enough”)—and while she claims she doesn’t read gossip about herself, she’s now all too aware that everyone else does. “I don’t know necessarily how much pri-vacy I’m entitled to,” she says when asked about the diffi culty of living in the public eye, “but I know I don’t get much of it. At the same time, I asked for this. I could be playing in a coffee-house—I’d be happy doing that, [but] not as

happy, probably. Knowing that people are going to hear the music I make is the most amazing feeling. Knowing that there are dudes waiting outside my house with cameras, hiding in bushes, is a less awesome feeling.”

No one would accuse Swift, whose parents moved the family from Wyomissing, Pa., to Nashville when she was 14 so she could pursue a music career, of being ungrateful for her success. The loss of privacy, she notes, is “a small price to pay for getting to play stadiums.” Still, there are days when she’d rather not deal with all that being Taylor Swift now entails. She travels with one or two security guards at all times because, as she puts it, “I have some crazies that are after me.” As a result, she can’t remem-ber the last time she went anywhere by herself.

“I have some days where I get frustrated,” she admits. “I kind of give myself this pep talk, like, ‘Are you in the mood for lots of social situations and pictures? If the answer’s no, stay inside.’ ”

Sometimes, just hanging at home with a little Chinese food and some crime-solving TV is exactly what she needs. “It’s just like this sense of”—she exhales deeply—“no one is watching me, no one is asking me anything. It’s calming.”

Maybe one of these days Swift will get around

to taking an extended break—although the mere thought turns the volume in her head up to 11. “If I took a break, would I stop writing songs so much?” she wonders.

Or maybe she’d wind up having even more to write about. Who knows? She doesn’t—not yet. “I have so much to learn about life,” she says. “I know nothing compared to what I’m going to know someday.”

FRIENDS AND CONFIDANTES With actress Emma Stone, one of six women Swi says she calls whenever something important happens.…

Current or former owners of homes or other structures containing

a plumbing system with Zurn brass crimp (F1807) fittings

connectors, could get benefits from a class action settlement.

LEGAL NOTICE

Para una notificación en Español, llamar o visitar nuestro website.

A settlement has been reached with Zurn Pex, Inc. and Zurn Industries LLC (“Zurn”) about allegedly defective brass crimp fittings/connectors made of yellow brass manufactured and/or sold by Zurn between 1996 and 2010 (“F1807 Fittings”). The settlement covers possible fitting leaks, occlusion (a blockage that reduces water flow) and damage to class members’ property as a result of alleged corrosion of the F1807 Fittings.

The United States District Court for the District of Minnesota will hold a hearing to decide whether to give final approval to the settlement, so that the benefits can be issued. Those included have legal rights and options, such as submitting a claim for benefits or excluding themselves from or objecting to the settlement. More information is in the detailed notice, which is available at www.plumbingfittingsettlement.com.

WHAT IS THIS ABOUT?

The lawsuit makes various claims, including that the F1807 Fittings leak and cause damage to property as a result of corrosion and that related repairs should be covered by warranty. Zurn denies all of the claims and allegations in the lawsuit and maintains that its F1807 Fittings are not defective. The Court has made no determination about the strengths or weaknesses of any of the claims or any of Zurn’s defenses. Instead, the parties have entered into a settlement to end the litigation.

WHO IS INCLUDED?

The Court created a Settlement Class covering all persons who own or owned buildings, homes, residences, or any other structures located in the United States that contain F1807 Fittings. Visit the website to read descriptions and see photos of the F1807 Fittings. Insurers or others that have paid claims resulting from corrosion of F1807 Fittings may also qualify for benefits under the settlement.

WHAT DOES THE SETTLEMENT PROVIDE?

Zurn will fund the settlement in an amount totaling no more than $20 million over a seven year claims period. For those who file valid claims, the settlement pays for property damages due to leaks of up to 60% of reasonable documented damage, subject to a cap of $100,000 per leak. The settlement also provides for 60% of re-plumbing costs for structures that have experienced at least two leaks due to documented corrosion of F1807 Fittings, up to a cap of $7,000 per structure (or $100,000 for defined large structures,

for which five leaks are required to qualify for re-plumb benefits). Details on the re-plumbing process are in the detailed Notice and in the Settlement Agreement, which are available at www.plumbingfittingsettlement.com.

Additionally, Class Members can make a claim for past current or future decreased water flow caused by occlusion from corrosion of one or more F1807 Fittings. Eligible claimants would qualify for remediation (repairs to eliminate the flow differential) up to a cap of $7,000 per structure (or $100,000 for defined large structures). If remediation does not restore normal water flow to the system, a re-plumb can be requested, subject to a cap of $7,000 per structure (or $100,000 for defined large structures). If such occlusions have already been repaired, Class Members may claim for up to 60% of the repair remediation or re-plumb costs that were incurred, subject to the same overall caps.

HOW DO YOU ASK FOR BENEFITS?

To obtain any benefits from the settlement you must fill out and submit a Claim Form. Claim Forms are available at the website or by calling 877-341-4602. The earliest deadline for submitting a claim is April 1, 2014. The detailed Notice and Settlement Agreement, available at www.plumbingfittingsettlement.com, describe more fully the benefits available under the proposed settlement and how to file a claim.

YOUR OTHER OPTIONS.

If you do not want to be legally bound by the settlement, you must exclude yourself from the Class by January 29, 2013, or you will not be able to sue Zurn about the legal claims this settlement resolves, ever again. If you exclude yourself, you cannot get any benefits from the settlement. If you stay in the Class, you may object to it by January 29, 2013. The detailed notice explains how to exclude yourself or object.

The Court will hold a hearing in the case, known as In

re Zurn Pex Plumbing Products Liability Litigation, Case No. 0:08cv01958, on February 25, 2013, at 9 am, to consider whether to approve the settlement, and a request by Class Counsel for attorneys’ fees, costs, and expenses of no more than $8.5 million dollars and incentive awards for the Class Representatives of $5,000 to $7,500. Payment of attorneys’ fees and expenses will not reduce the benefits to Settlement Class Members. You or your own lawyer, if you have one, may ask to appear and speak at the hearing at your own cost, but you do not have to. For more information, call or go to the website shown below.

Richer, creamier lotion

It’s time to kick your warm- weather moisturizing routine up a notch, says New York and Santa Monica dermatol-ogist Karyn Grossman, M.D. So trade your summer face gel for a lotion or your lotion for a cream. For scaly legs, arms, and feet, Grossman suggests scanning the label for a combination of water-binding hyaluronic acid and shea butter, which traps moisture in the skin.

Daily shampoos

During the dry winter months, hair typically doesn’t need washing as often—try using shampoo and conditioner on alternate days only. If your scalp is fl aky and itchy, switch to a dandruff formula once or twice weekly. Give over-processed tresses the winter off by choosing low-lights (which darken small sections of hair) instead of bleaching highlights.

polish—which stains nails and requires drying remover to pry off—but keep feet soft with a regular footbath, trim, and buff. At night, slather on foot cream, then slip into a pair of thick socks to help the cream penetrate the toughest calluses.

SWAP IN

Moisturizing sunscreen

Unless you’ll be on skis all day, an SPF 15 facial moisturizer is a great alternative to the 30 you wore in the warmer months, says Doris Day, M.D., clini-cal assistant professor of dermatology at New York University Medical Center. Just be diligent about application: Cancer-causing UVA rays can pass through car and offi ce windows no matter the weather.

SWAP IN

Lightweight foundation If the loose powder you’ve been dusting onto your face makes you look chalky, apply a thin coat of anti-aging primer to even out your complexion, then top with a sheer foundation. Your skin is paler this time of year, so test a few shades before buying.

A tinted lip balm will keep your pout hydrated—or try a lip stain with a layer of balm slicked on top. “I like formulas with shea butter, which feel soft on the lips, not waxy,” says Grossman. —Cara Birnbaum

Chilly temps and plunging humidity can mean a rough season for skin.

But these simple swaps will keep you looking gorgeous all the way till spring.

PROTECT YOUR BABY AGAINST WHOOPING COUGH.As PARADE reported in Octo-ber, this year the U.S. is on track to have the highest number of whoop-ing cough cases in more than 50 years. Now an expert panel has recom-mended that all pregnant women get immunized against the disease, which is o en passed from mother to baby and can be fatal in infants. Vaccinating during pregnancy helps moms-to-be pass along the antibodies to their unborn babies, but if a woman can’t or doesn’t get vacci-nated during preg-nancy, she should do so immediately a er giving birth.

My wife doubles or triples

the recommended laundry

detergent amounts to get

more suds. How can I

rationally argue that she

should use the indicated

amount per load? —David

Kaffenberger, Spring Valley, Ohio

Ask her this question: Why would any manufacturer direct consumers to use less than the optimal amount? Their laundry might not get clean, and the company would sell less product. That doesn’t make sense!

Consider a bubble bath. Do you get any cleaner? No. And your dishes get clean in the dishwasher with few suds, don’t they? Yes. But Ameri-cans love suds so much that manufacturers use high- foaming formulas whenever they can. Shampoo is a good example. The froth does nothing but make a mess in

the sink that takes time and effort to wash down the drain. These cleansing agents all work differently, of course, but they do have something in common: The suds they produce do not refl ect their cleaning action.

In fact, using too much detergent can make laundry a bit dingy and stiff. Also, the suds can cause problems with the machine long-term. Some washing machines even have software designed to overcome our tendency to use too much detergent. They sense the excess suds and add extra rinses!

Are raccoons especially

smart? I’ve watched them

disable a trap and unscrew

the cap from a bottle that

was in my garbage can.

—Lavinia Washington, Los Angeles

Raccoons are smart, all right, but it is the nearly opposable “thumbs” on their front paws that allow them to do all sorts of things that opossums can only dream about.

Opossums, by the way, do have opposable toes on their hind paws, which is great for climbing but not a reason for envy. Imagine having to answer the phone with your feet.

Superman toss back his cape, step on a polka-dot stool, and brush his teeth as if his attack on plaque were a victory for our country.

I introduced Clayton to Chris-topher Reeve’s cinematic version of Superman this summer.

“Wow, Grandma,” Clayton said, mesmerized. “Wow.”

He experienced only a second of disappointment, when Clark Kent showed up for work at the Daily Planet.

“What’s he doing, Grandma?” “He writes for a newspaper,”

I said. “Just like Grandma.”Clayton furrowed his brow.

“Why would he do that?”Whaaaat? I fanned my face

with the remote and hit pause. “Honey,” I said, fi rmly, “Super-

man knows that democracy depends on a thriving free press, and that—”

Clayton waved his hands in my face. “No, Grandma,” he said. “I mean, why does Superman have to get a job?”

Whew. Quick tutorial on the American work ethic. Hit play.

Little did I know that, three months later, Superman would throw a hissy fi t and quit.

“Facts have been replaced by opinions,” Clark Kent ranted in a recent DC Comics issue. “Infor-mation has been replaced by

bleachers wearing a Superman T-shirt. No bones were broken. Due to the shirt, you understand.

More than 30 years later, our grandson Clayton dons his Super-man pajamas before bedtime. If you want to have faith in the future, I recommend watching 4-year-old IL

It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s a ... blogger?Say it ain’t so, Clark! Now that you’ve jumped ship at the Daily Planet, here are a few words of advice—from one ink-stained wretch to another.

SOCIAL MEDIA

KRYPTONITE.

QUITTING TIME Kent has put in more than 70 years at the Metropolis newspaper.

Superman and I go way back. He was born here in Ohio, brought to life

by Cleveland writers Jerome Siegel and Joe Shuster. I met him in TV reruns in the 1960s. It was love at fi rst fl ight. In college, for a self-portrait, I leaped from

entertainment. Reporters have become stenographers. I am not the only one who believes in the power of the press—the fact that we need to stand up for the truth. For justice. And yeah—I’m not ashamed to say—the American way.”

This from a 27-year-old newbie. Except he’s not. Kent claims he’s been in the newsroom for five years. Please. The guy’s been pecking the keyboards since the 1930s. Journalists and math: so painful to watch.

Okay, I’m just going to say it. Kent has been ethically challenged for years. How many times can you hide behind that mild-mannered malarkey while story after story about you bleeds across the front page? For 55 years I’ve been waiting for Kent to raise his hand in a meeting and mumble, “Um, about that man in the red cape …”

But, no. Instead, Super-man has stomped out of the newsroom and trashed the industry that gave him cover. Rumor has it that he left the paper to blog. Bad idea, meet worst nightmare.

Superman, a little advice: We’re short on heroes these days. We don’t want you to be like the rest of us. Social media is the new Kryp-tonite. One minute you’re trolling Lex Luthor’s Face-book page, and the next thing you know you’re tweeting X-ray vision pics of women on the 23rd fl oor of the Hilton. It happens.

Resist, Man of Steel. Resist.
