WALTER SCOTT’S

British actor/comedian James Corden, 36, best known to

American audiences as The Baker in Into the Woods, will put

his own spin on The Late Late Show on CBS when he takes

over as host from Craig Ferguson beginning tomorrow night.

Just as your film career is launching, you lock into a late-night talk show. Why? “My daughter was born nine and a half weeks before the Into the Woods press junket, and I was away intermittently for five weeks of her life. Then America’s No. 1 network was offering me a chance to be creative every single day, which is not the case when you’re making films. I get to talk to America every night, and be a consistent and present father and husband.”Did Craig Ferguson give you any advice? “He said, ‘I’m here for you. Any advice you need, any help you require, I’m here, use me.’ But [all the late-night hosts] have been great: Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers.”

Were you a fan of late-night shows growing up? “I didn’t know what these shows were when I was a kid. YouTube didn’t exist. You never see David Letterman on British TV.”Lots of Brits who move to Los Angeles seem to like to be near the ocean. “It makes no sense to me to fly 11½ hours and then be another hour from the sea. So yes, we are on that side of town.”

Q: I’m a big fan of Cuba Gooding Jr. What’s next for this talented actor?

—Lakesha Jefferson, Houston

I enjoy watching Debi Mazar and her husband on their Cooking Channel show. Does she have any acting jobs coming up? —Lorena S., Jacksonville, Fla.

A: She does! Mazar is one of the stars of TV Land’s new series Younger, premiering March 31, about a single mom (Sutton Foster) who has trouble re-entering the work world because of her age. After a makeover by her best friend Maggie (Mazar), she reinvents herself as a much younger woman. “It’s called survival,” says Mazar, 50. “It’s also called keeping it interesting.”

A: The Academy Award winner, 47, is all about TV for 2015. He guest-starred on FOX’s Wednesday night series Empire, had a starring role in BET’s The Book of Negroes, is currently filming the role of O.J. Simpson for the new FX series American Crime Story and will play himself in Comedy Central’s new series Big Time in Hollywood, FL, premiering March 25.

The imaginative girl who lives in the “room on the tippy-top floor” of The Plaza Hotel in New York City has been delighting young readers for decades, including Girls creator Lena Dunham, who has an Eloise tattoo on her back. Some people speculate that author Kay Thompson’s goddaughter, actress Liza Minnelli, was the inspiration for the character, but when it came to how she appeared on the page, illustrator Hilary Knight says she “was a combination of every person I had ever known, including myself.” Learn more in the March 23 HBO documentary (with Dunham as executive producer) It’s Me, Hilary: The Man Who Drew Eloise, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the first Eloise book.

Trouble in Paradise?A&E’s new real-life series Surviving Marriage (debuting March 24) follows couples on the brink of divorce who are “stranded” on a remote island for an extreme therapy session. So what’s the key to a happy marriage? Having “a realistic, healthy expectation of what a normal marriage feels and looks like,” says psychologist Colleen Long, who attempts to repair the troubled marriages on the show.

Cute KittiesWho knew artists had such a soft spot for felines? Artists and Their Cats by Alison Nastasi (Chronicle, 2015) gathers behind-the-

scenes photos and stories of more than 50 famous artists and their feline friends—

from John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s menagerie, which included Salt (who was black) and Pepper (who was white) to Salvador Dalí’s pampered ocelot, Babou (on the cover), who was treated to luxury cruises, bejeweled collars and exotic cuisine.

Tap into your own personality traits to stop oversleeping, oversharing,

overeating and more. By Abigail Walch • Cover photography by erin & erica

Snacking late at night, skimping on sleep, nail biting, binging on House of Cards—nearly everyone has vices. at’s because, try as we might, bad habits are maddeningly hard to break. On the flip side, good hab-

its, such as eating more healthfully or exercising regularly, never seem to stick. e upshot: Most people throw up their hands and surrender.

But now a new book, Better an Before: Mastering the Hab-its of Our Everyday Lives, (Crown, 2015) by best-selling author Gretchen Rubin, offers some insightful solutions. (Warning: ere’s no one-size-fits-all strategy.)

“It would be so great if there was a magic answer that would do it for all of us, but it doesn’t exist,” says Rubin, 47. “We know that because we’d all have great habits if there was one thing we could all do. You have to take it back to yourself.”

Rubin, whose fascination with habits evolved during her

exhaustive research on hap-piness—which resulted in two blockbuster books, e Happiness Project (2009)

and Happier at Home (2012)—found that

our inability to mas-ter unwanted be-haviors was a major

downer. So, after guiding millions of read-ers down the path of true contentedness, New York City-based Rubin, a former law clerk for Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, turned her investigative skills to-wards habits.

Her most revealing find? Change is pos-sible if we do some soul searching and identify how we respond to expectations. And, just about everybody falls into one of four personality categories: Questioners, Obligers, Rebels and Upholders.

“It was like discovering the periodic table of elements,” says Rubin, who developed the Four Tendencies personality framework to help those in search of habit change de-termine their type.

Rubin believes herself to be a clas-sic Upholder, someone who forms habits relatively easily because she responds well to both other people’s deadlines and her own.

As to the other types, Ques-tioners will only form a habit if it makes sense to them; Obligers work hard to meet other people’s expectations but often let themselves down. And Rebels resent—and resist—habits.

e trick, says Rubin, is to “tailor your habits to suit yourself.”

PERSONALITY + PAIRING = SUCCESSAfter acquainting readers with tendencies, Rubin poses questions in the book to help tease out more nuanced personality puzzle pieces. Are you a lark or an owl, a lover of simplicity or abundance, an underbuyer or an overbuyer, an abstainer or a moderator, a sprinter or a marathoner?

“ink about the habit that you want to form and then think, What’s everything I could do to set myself up for success?” says Rubin. For example, if you want to exercise more and you’re an Obliger and a lark, call your friend who lives across the street to meet at 6:30 every morning for a walk.

One common pitfall, says Rubin,

Her most revealing find? Change is pos-sible if we do some soul searching and identify how we respond to expectations. And, just about everybody falls into one of four personality categories: Questioners, Obligers, Rebels and Upholders.

“It was like discovering the periodic table of elements,” says Rubin, who developed the Four Tendencies personality framework to help those in search of habit change deter-mine their type.

The trick, says Rubin, is to “tailor your habits to suit yourself.”

“Think about the habit that you want to form and then think, What’s everything I could do to set myself up for success?” says Rubin. For example, if you want to exercise more and you’re an Obliger and a lark, call your friend who lives across the street to meet at 6:30 every morning for a walk.

One common pitfall, says Rubin,

especially when it comes to changing your diet, is lack of clarity. “You can’t make a habit out of eating more healthfully,” she says. Instead, your habit should be specific, something like: “I’m going to pack a lunch every day and bring it to work instead of eating out.” Other helpful diet strategies include practicing distraction (a friend of

Rubin’s files her nails when the urge to snack strikes) and monitoring intake (Rubin uses the MyFitnessPal app to track food).

As for exercise, Rubin recommends a strat-egy called pairing—coupling two activities, one that you need or want to do and one that you don’t particularly want to do. Rubin, for example, only allows herself to read maga-zines while on cardio machines at the gym.

When her younger sister, Elizabeth Craft, 43, complained that she had no time for ex-ercise, Rubin gave her the ultimate pairing device for her 40th birthday: a treadmill desk.

“It’s so satisfying to leave work and say, ‘Not only did I work today, but I walked five

miles,’” says Craft, a Los Angeles-based television writer and producer.

It is this same deeper under-standing of self that helped Ma-ria Giacchino, 53, a music and film producer in New York, cut down on drinking. Through conversations with Rubin, a longtime friend, Giacchino

came to see how much her drinking was tied to her identity

as a wine-loving Italian. “I felt like I wasn’t necessarily mak-

ing a choice before, and now I know I can,” says Giacchino, who is part Rebel and more likely to succeed when she feels in control of her decisions.

Now, when the sun is setting and din-ner prep begins—cues that would typically inspire Giacchino to pour a glass of wine—she waits 15 minutes, distracts herself with the newspaper or Facebook and then reevaluates.

While en route to becoming the Habit Change Guru, Rubin also looked to make changes closer to home. Through “some combination of proselytization, harassing and explaining why something is the right thing,” in the words of her husband, Jamie Rubin, 47, she has encouraged him to adopt better eat-ing habits and is currently working on getting him to go to bed earlier.

“She tries to convince me,” says Jamie,

Bad Habits on the Small ScreenYou’re not alone when it comes to struggling with bad habits. They’re on display on screens everywhere—from Birdman star Michael Keaton’s obvious gum-smacking at the Academy Awards to Lady Mary’s predilection for making poor romantic choices on Downton Abbey.

Here we apply Gretchen Rubin’s Four Tendencies personality framework to a few fictional folks’ foibles.

y

W

fro

Andy Bernard (The Office)Habit: inappropriately bursting into song Tendency: ObligerAs a salesman with daddy issues, Andy is the ultimate Obliger who tries to meet all his co-workers’ expectations. Maybe his musical outbursts are the one way his true personality is popping out? Obliger with a side of Rebel?

Kramer (Seinfeld)Habit: barging into rooms without knockingTendency: QuestionerAs a Questioner, Kramer is meeting his own expecta-tions of behavior and resisting common etiquette. He needs a good reason not to barge in; Jerry and the gang never gave him one, so why would he change?

Carrie Bradshaw (Sex and the City)Habit: relentless shoe-shopping despite a limited budgetTendency: Rebel Shoes and fashion are part of her identity, so it takes serious repercus-sions (i.e., financial problems) for Carrie to reign in her spending. As Rubin says in her book, “Rebels wake up and think, ‘What do I want to do today?’” What Car-rie wants, obviously, is to have the freedom to shop and adorn herself—regardless of the consequences.

Chris Traeger (Parks and Recreation)Habit: compulsively exercising and taking healthy eating to the extreme Tendency: UpholderChris is very self-motivated and, like any good Upholder, he may be so busy relentlessly meeting outer and inner expectations that he’s overdoing it. Maybe he needs to lower his own expectations and give himself a gold star for moderation.

Peter Griffin (Family Guy)Habit: brash impulsivenessTendency: RebelWith seemingly no impulse control at all, the obese head of the animated Griffin family is a no-holds-barred, no-rules Rebel. He doesn’t think before he speaks and he is, to use a word Rubin has in her Rebel description, “unshackled.”

Olivia Pope (Scandal)Habit: drinking very expensive red wine at night Tendency: Questioner If asked about her drinking, Olivia would no doubt explain, “I can afford it and it’s not affecting my work performance, so bring on the Bordeaux.” Like a typical Questioner, she’s meeting her own expectations and doesn’t much give a fig about what others expect of her.

executive director of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s Office of Storm Recovery, adding that as a Questioner, he has to per-suade himself that success-fully changing a habit is the right thing to do.

GOOD HABITS = HAPPINESSBecause making and keeping habits requires a tremendous amount of hard work, Rubin encourages treats.

“If you are constantly push-ing out and nothing is coming in, then you’re not going to be able to stick to these habits when they’re a little challeng-ing,” she says. “Treats are a way to give yourself that en-ergy you need to keep going.”

Creature of Good Habits: Start &End with a Kiss The preternaturally practical Gretchen Rubin boasts few bad habits of her own (although she confesses to twirling her hair and drinking too many Diet Cokes). Instead, she fills her days with routines that fuel her work and happiness.

» Wakes at 6 a.m.

» Kisses her husband, Jamie.

» Works for one hour before Jamie and daughters, Eleanor, 10, and Eliza, 16, get up.

» Eats breakfast (three eggs cooked in butter; low-carb all the way).

» Walks Eleanor to school.

» Replies to emails before work.

» On Tuesdays, she walks with a friend. (“Just putting it on the calendar makes a huge difference.”)

» On Wednesdays, she picks up Eliza from school and heads to a weekly adventure, such as visiting a museum. (“It sounds kind of dorky,” says Eliza. “But it’s actually really nice.”)

» Observes quitting time: The exact hour changes, but she always declares when work ends and relaxation begins.

» At 8:30 p.m., she brushes her teeth (to prevent after-dinner raids).

» Kisses Jamie goodnight.

» 10:30 p.m. bedtime.

Rubin’s treat of choice? Her favorite perfume.

Of course, the ultimate treat is the freedom that comes from shedding bad habits. As much effort as it takes to make lasting changes, Rubin believes that it is more than worth it because, at the end of

day, good habits free us from making decision after deci-sion and from exerting self-control.

“e more [things] you can make into a habit, then the less you have to drain your-self using your willpower,” she says.

As Rubin sees it, better habits pave the way for growth—and growth leads to greater happiness.

And, after all, isn’t that what it’s all about?

The Voice Clarifying TV Ears Headset is specifically

designed for clear, distinct, TV listening, without turning

up the volume. With TV Ears wireless technology, you

set your own headset volume and tone, while other

TV listeners hear the television at a volume level that’s

comfortable for them. You can even listen through the

headset only and put the TV on mute if the situation

calls for a quiet environment…maybe a family member is

sleeping in the next room. Or perhaps you are the only one

who is interested in listening to the ballgame.

Doctor Recommended TV Ears! Proprietary Voice

Clarifying Circuitry® makes words easier to discern

and reduces background noise so television dialog is

understandable. That’s why “...my wife and I have used

TV Ears almost daily for the past ten years and find

them an invaluable help in our enjoyment of

television. We would not be without them! As a

retired Otologist, I heartily recommend TV Ears

to people with normal hearing as well as those

with hearing loss.”

- Robert Forbes, M.D., California

TV Ears is Easy to Use! The transmitter

attaches to the audio ports on your television

and sends a signal to the wireless headset. The

transmitter also charges the headset while it’s

not in use. There is no

complicated

technology to

understand and no

expensive batteries to

replace…just sit down

and enjoy the show!

“Now my husband can have the volume as loud as he

needs and I can have the TV at my hearing level. “TV

Ears” are so comfortable that Jack forgets he has

them on! He can once again hear and understand

the dialog.”

- Darlene & Jack B., CA

Hear television dialog clearly without

disturbing others with loud TV volume!

SHRIMP, CELERY AND GREEN OLIVES ON TOAST

1. In a large bowl, combine the hearts of palm, celery, parsley, olives, almonds, onion, lemon juice and oil.

2. Slice each shrimp into 2 or 3 thin pieces, lengthwise, and then into 2 or 3 pieces across. Mix with the rest of the salad, cover and refriger-ate for 20 minutes or more.

3. Top the toasts with the chilled shrimp salad. Makes 10.

Turns out the hottest food trend is as familiar as sliced bread. Maybe because it is sliced bread—specifically, toast. The humble browning of bread has popped up on menus nationwide and stars in Jill Donenfeld’s new cookbook Better on Toast (William Mor-row, 2015). Here’s one of her favorite ways to enjoy toast for supper.

1 (15-oz) can hearts of palm, drained and sliced

2 to 3 celery stalks, sliced ½-inch thin on the bias (about 1½ cups)

½ cup torn parsley leaves

½ cup Castelvetrano olives (or another hearty green olive), pitted and chopped

¼ cup Marcona almonds or blanched, salted almonds

½ cup quartered, sliced Vidalia onion

¼ cup freshly squeezed lemon juice

3 Tbsp almond or olive oil

12 to 15 cooked shrimp (about 10 oz)

10 ¼-inch-thick slices whole-wheat sourdough bread, pan-toasted

MARCH 22, 2015 | 15

Can you tell me what’s so wrong with the U.S. paying ransoms for hostages held by terrorists? Even a price in the millions is paltry compared to our govern-ment’s vast financial resources, and it’s obviously morally right to use a micro-percentage of it to save American lives.

—M.V. New York

This is an example of how an action that may be morally right may also be unwise to actually perform. First, paying ransoms to liberate hostages puts a price tag on every American, thus encouraging terrorists to take more hostages. Second, which may be even worse, is that ransom payments help fund the various activities of the terrorist organizations, thus making them stronger and helping them grow and succeed in their mission. This is why hostage trading is usually preferable.
