Paperworks 2011Exhibition Statement

Paper is one of those fantastic mediums that possess a dual nature– when adorned in poetry we see it as intimate, but when it is in the form of a business letter we see it as impersonal. One thing we can’t deny about paper is that it has an unprecedented power to communicate, and has been trusted as the medium of choice to preserve many of the world’s most sacred documents.

In most group shows, it is difficult to pinpoint a curatorial direction when selecting works. How-ever, we are fortunate as this show seeks to communicate the versatility of paper. The works in this exhibition demonstrate how the medium has been used and continues to transform to reflect and serve our human need to communicate with others. There are plenty of examples in this exhibition where artists have employed the use of paper to communicate their private thoughts, or have used paper as a mirror to represent ideas of modern civilization in exciting new ways.

For example, there are works on paper that address the virtual world, as in Angela Driscoll’s Blog Drawing: Blogs on Blogs #3 (2009) where illustrating presence is key and blog followers are repre-sented by a quantitative use of hash marks to suggest the power of mass-thinking. Curtis Jones’ portraits of soldiers uses the haunting repetition of party hats (also made of paper) to suggest the pixels of a computer-generated image, or Sage Lewis’ Shatter Shimmer Drawings (2010) where the delicate nature of genesis and the power of illusion come into play. There are also works that further the tradition of papercraft, For example, Miranda Brandon’s Hummingbird in Headphones (2010) uses intricate folds and assemblage to mimic a playful diorama, and Marie Hannigová Lee’s three-dimensional piece, Cool Coloratura (2010) that seems to grow out of the existing architecture. A combination of works selected for the exhibition use original poetry, nostalgic imagery of early and late Americana, traditional and modern printmaking techniques, intimate realism, and ex-pressionistic linework further proving that paper, while seemingly delicate, can hold an unlimited amount of potential. An artist’s responsibility lies not only in fulfilling a personal desire to com-municate, but to do so in a way that is honest. It is in honesty that we find the most revealing moments in art, and it was a pleasure to find such a collection of artists who use paper to do so.
