Send one set to the Outfitter. Send one set to Air Support 2000. Keep one set with you at all times. Leave one set at home with your emergency contact. Use black ink in filling out all forms and applications. No other color will be accepted. You should use Global Priority Mail from the USPS. Mail is notoriously slow to other parts of the world. Passports (Make a copy of your passport to use as a back-up just in case) Tickets (It is good to have copies as a back-up just in case!) Form 4457 (Homeland Security form. Fill it out online, print, present at their office) SA Police Check SAPS 520 (Copy of Air 2000 paperwork background check) Outfitter’s Letter/Info (Declaration of your visit to hunt in South Africa) Drivers license (Again, photocopies for backup just in case!) Try to have these items and backup info. or photocopies of these items organized for quick access as you travel. Hunting Gear This is what will probably be needed for use in the field. All of this can easily pack into a suitable fanny pack or light day type backpack. Lockable ammo box (Plastic/metal, stored separate from firearms in checked luggage) Ammunition (Take enough! It’s not as easy to get in other count ries) Rifle (Choose the caliber most comfortable with. GUIDELINES IN PREPARING FOR HUNTING AND TRAVEL IN SOUTH AFRICA
List of Items to prepare for South Africa
Much of the information that you will need is found at the East Cape Safaris web site. The
information below represents some of the things learned from my previous two trips to South
Africa. You will also find copies and examples of the displayed forms that can be
downloaded to assist you in this process. Check at the web sites listed in this document.
Paperwork and items to check. Make complete copies of all of your paperwork. Some of this information need not be sent to
other parties. But you should have ready access to it should it be necessary. Send one set to
the Outfitter. Send one set to Air Support 2000. Keep one set with you at all times. Leave one
set at home with your emergency contact. Use black ink in filling out all forms and
applications. No other color will be accepted. You should use Global Priority Mail from the
USPS. Mail is notoriously slow to other parts of the world.
Passports (Make a copy of your passport to use as a back-up just in case)
Tickets (It is good to have copies as a back-up just in case!)
Form 4457 (Homeland Security form. Fill it out online, print, present at their office)
SA Police Check SAPS 520 (Copy of Air 2000 paperwork background check)
Outfitter’s Letter/Info (Declaration of your visit to hunt in South Africa)
Drivers license (Again, photocopies for backup just in case!)
Firearms insurance (Airport insurance may not cover effectively)
Medical insurance (check to if personal health insurance can be used internationally)
Credit Card (notify them of dates it will be used out of the country)
Contact Numbers (credit card, health care, etc.)
Power of Attorney (example, Do you have a family member you are responsible for?)
Try to have these items and backup info. or photocopies of these items organized for quick
access as you travel.
Hunting Gear This is what will probably be needed for use in the field. All of this can easily pack into a
suitable fanny pack or light day type backpack.
Lockable ammo box (Plastic/metal, stored separate from firearms in checked luggage)
Ammunition (Take enough! It’s not as easy to get in other countries)
Rifle (Choose the caliber most comfortable with. Magnums are not necessary)
Cleaning Kit (A compact Otis cleaning kits can be carried in your day pack)
Backpack or Day Pack (Something that will allow easy transport and use of gear)
Binoculars ( Great optical quality. You will spend time glassing and checking game)
Range finder (This is optional because the PH will probably have one)
Shooting Sticks (This is optional because the PH will usually have one)
Gun Case (Use something hard, tough and durable! Saw a disaster on last trip)
Sun Glasses
Flashlight (Small flashlight or hat light can occasionally prove useful)
Clothing You will find that you do not need as much clothing since there is daily laundry service at the
East Cape ranch. Clothing is ready for use the next afternoon upon your return. You will only
need three sets of clothing and personal wear for your stay. You may want to choose clothing
that serves both hunting and casual needs.
Boots (Non-insulated & broken in. You will do some stalking and walking)
Comfortable socks (Hunting and suitable for early fall weather)
Thermal Underwear (Wear layers for easy removal during the day)
Pants (Jeans are good. Neutral earth colors or camo suitable for surrounding terrain)
Shirts (suitable for hunting or casual)
Handkerchiefs
Sneakers (For when you are not hunting)
Coat (Something seasonal that will be suitable for both hunting and casual wear)
Hat (For hunting or casual wear)
Photographic Gear You will be experiencing a trip that in my opinion is unlike other hunting trips that I have
taken in the past. You will want to take as many pictures as you can. I took long life
rechargeable batteries for my days afield. One tip I can give is to keep the video cam running
as much as possible. Don’t get hung up on everything being a close-up. Your partner should
have the camera ready for recording as you hunt, and you for them. Try to plan ahead and
anticipate how you want a particular video clip to be captured. You should plan on having
plenty of material to edit upon your return to the states. NOTE! Both cameras should handle
SD type cards for storage. You will want to take many pictures to select from and edit into a
professional quality presentation. A 12 megapixel camera will give you the ability to make
quality poster size prints on glossy paper. This gives one the option of making that one
special print large and of a very high quality!
Video Camera (A compact video HD camera with zoom lens works well).
Digital Camera (A digital camera, 12 mega-pixels’ minimum and a zoom lens).
Batteries for Gear ( It is good to have extras. Recommend extras for your HD CAM)
Electrical Products South Africa operates on 220 volt current. Make sure you check about the type of electric
converter that you will need if you plan on bringing electrical appliances.
