THE CHALLENGE

Shomolu is the biggest commercial printing hub in Nigeria. Almost every house / building in the area is home to one form of printing press or another.

The volume of printing in the area consequently leads to very high volume of paper waste which is environmentally unfriendly if not properly disposed.

Also, the printers majorly rely on diesel generators for power which is very expensive and also environmentally unfriendly (Air pollution and noise pollution)

THE IDEA

This idea is a program that tackles the problem of environmental pollution while bringing immense benefit to the people in that area and the state as a whole.

SOLUTION

Launched in 2005, ecomagination is GE's commitment to technology solutions that save money and reduce environmental impact for its customers and GE’s own operations.

Specifically, GE has been involved in solar energy research for decades. The years of engineering expertise and knowledge in the solar industry is now being applied to helping business owners harness the power of the sun on commercial rooftops, carports, and undeveloped properties to lower utility bills and become more sustainable.

This model can be adopted in this printing hub such that paper waste serves as a form of payment for power.

IMPLEMENTATION

GE would construct solar power generating units in dierent areas as well as waste paper collection points.

For a particular volume of paper waste provided, the individuals gets a voucher with power units that can be used to power the printing machines.

GE transports the waste paper to recycling companies who can partner on the project.

IMPLEMENTATION

WHAT GE GETS

The project would require extra research to be fully custom made to suit the needs of the terrain, its people and the economy. The accumulated knowledge could be shared and built upon in order to implement similar models in other areas with similar conditions.

The recycling idea would not be limited to paper waste alone but can also be extended to other recyclable materials such as plastic, cans, etc.

PRESS

If properly implemented across the area, when people think of solar power, they think of GE. This would consequently drive up sales of solar power units in the city.

GE also gets a positive perception from consumers.
