Briefing to Discuss TSMAD20/DIPWG2-14A
Background
• 2008 CSMWG-18 discusses need for a better ECDIS symbology reference for mariners
• 2007 Danish paper to CSPCWG-4 proposes “Extension of INT 1 to also comprise ECDIS symbols”
• Other earlier efforts to improve users’ understanding of symbology include development of the S-52 Part 1 Addendum and the ECDIS Chart 1
2
Current P/ECDIS Development
• Reformatting all S-52 symbols into JPEGs• Database for mapping S-52 symbols to INT1
– Based on data in S-52 Part 1 Addendum– Over 1500 symbol mappings
• Preliminary design for new Chart 1 format
3
S-52 JPEGs
4
Example S-52 > INT1 Symbol Mapping
5
Symbol Mapping Distribution
6
88% of INT1 symbols have 4 or fewer corresponding S-52 symbols
19 INT1 symbols have 10 or more corresponding S-52 symbols
30 S-52 symbols mapped to INT1 Q130.1
7
30 S-52 symbols mapped to INT1 Q130.3
8
Some Other Issues
• Some INT1 symbols specified in the Part 1 Addendum may be incorrect
• Some of the tables in Part 1 reference obsolete symbol names
• CSPCWG is considering changes to INT1– Deleting Section U, “Small Craft Facilities”– Combining lists of terms and abbreviations (G, O, V, W,
X) into two separate unlettered sections
9
10
P/ECDIS Chart 1 Design
• Landscape format• Column headers• INT1 symbols on left of page (unlike previous
editions of the U.S. Chart 1)• U.S. national symbols (NOAA and NGA) on right
side of page• Section letters on both sides on top of each page• Several new narrative sections written especially
for ECDIS users.
11
New Narrative Sections Could Include:
• Different Paper and ECDIS symbology requirements• Special ECDIS symbols (Isolated Danger, Safety Contour)• Conditions that affect the portrayal of some features,
such as the safety contour setting• Simplified symbology• Colour palettes (Day, Night, Dusk)• Viewing groups• The i and ? families of S-52 symbols• Unknown object• Portrayal of area features with centered symbols
12
Recommendations
1. Include S-52 JPEGs in S-52 PresLib CD2. Compile S-52 errors discovered in creation of
P/ECDIS Chart 1 into S-52 deferred amendment3. Participation by DIPWG and TSMAD members
– Reviewing and making recommendations for improving the P/ECDIS Chart 1 as successive portions of the document are completed
13
Actions for DIPWG
• Endorse the work done by the United States• Review and comment on the prototype P/ECDIS
Chart 1 format• Review and comment on the accuracy of the S-52
to INT 1 symbol mapping• Make recommendations for any additional narrative
sections in the P/ECDIS Chart 1(Sharing any training materials already covering these topics would not be not be turned away)
