Toronto Symphony Orchestra

On November 8, the

Grade 7’s went on an

amazing trip to the

Toronto Symphony

Orchestra. There we

listened to many

interesting pieces by

famous composers.

After lunch we went

on a Picture

Scavenger Hunt,

which was a lot of

fun. We had a great

time, and learned

many new,

fascinating things

about both music

and downtown

Toronto.

ICE CREAM COMETS!

Making the ice cream comets

was a great learning experience

that also had a kick of fun within

it. Each grade 6 class made an

ice cream comet to learn the

different parts of a comet such

as the core (nucleus) and the

different gases that help make

up the comet. We made the ice

cream comet by following some

simple steps; first we had to mix

different ingredients to make the

ice cream which was a symbol

of a comet, then we decorated

it with many different candies

such as jelly beans, sprinkles,

gummy worms and many other

delicious candies. This

experiment was a lot of fun

because everyone had a great

time making and eating that ice

cream comet. At the end of this

experiment we all learned the

different things that make up a

comet while having fun learning.

On behalf of the grade 6

students, we would like to thank

all of the grade 6 science

teachers for organizing this event

and for their efforts to make this

a very special experience for us.

Happy Holidays! December is one of my

favourite months as we recognize, value and

celebrate many different holidays and religious

holy days.

We hope the winter break will provide time for

everyone to rest and enjoy the company of

family and friends. Our dedicated and

On November 8, some Grade 7s and Grade 6s went to the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra played a delightful musical piece called Fantasia de la Danza. This piece is an Argentinian-American piece. The orchestra had several instruments from different instrument families, for example, from the strings family there were violins, cellos, double bass and many more. The orchestra also played another piece called Bolero. This piece made me have mixed emotions because at one moment I felt happy and at another moment, sad then terrified or freaked out. After the performance we went for lunch at Metro Hall, a place that was kind of an

were absolutely amazing! There were students from many different areas. The music was

terrific. After the performance everyone was excited to go to Metro Hall and buy their lunches.

We had a great time. We did a scavenger hunt and took pictures while waiting for our buses.

Overall, we had a great time and look forward to another visit to the Toronto Symphony

Orchestra.

This was a good chance to see the wonderful sights of Toronto and to tell you the truth, it was pretty sweet. We have to thank Mr. Nash and the Grade 7 teachers for this trip. My trip to the Toronto Symphony Orchestra was so amazing.

It was really memorable. The grade 7s and I listened to

great pieces of music played by a huge group of talented

people that played percussion, wind, brass and stringed

instruments. There were two special performers, Daniel

Haas and Jason Vieaux. They played really well. I consider

this trip a highlight of my grade 7 year. We also got to walk

around the beautiful city of Toronto, but best of all, we

enjoyed the trip together.

The trip to the Toronto Symphony Orchestra on November 8 was the adventure of my life. It was an honour to be there. I had never seen a place where so many performers had great talent.

So many musicians played together in unison. Everyone listened respectfully. We saw many instruments there, like the violin, drums, Guitar, etc. My favourite part was when Bolero was played. It was my favourite because all the instruments were played. It was one of the special moments in my life. I think everyone enjoyed the concert.

The type of music they played was awesome. It was professional and had a lot of practice. Not everyone has the type of talent they had. They played numerous types of music. One of them was Bolero. At 11:30, the orchestra was finished and it was lunch

time. We walked a little distance and went inside an enormous basement that had a huge food court. After lunch we did a scavenger hunt outside where we were asked to take pictures of the things on a worksheet. The reward was that if we finished it and got all the pictures we would get a pizza party.

My partner on the return trip was Bhavay. We were talking to each other the whole time. We reached our school and went back

to our class. This trip was one of the best experiences of my life. I had never been to an orchestra before and have never seen a

gorgeous structure ever in my past. Awais 7B

I wrote this interesting essay about a trip that the Grade 7s took on the 8th of November, 2012. The place we went to was located in downtown Toronto. It was called the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.

The trip to the Toronto Symphony Orchestra was pretty awesome.

It was fun to travel on the bus as I listened to songs with my partner, Palash. He is really a fun person and a good friend of mine.

When we reached our destination, all we saw was a dome shaped

building. We all walked inside as a school and then got separated

into a class. We went up stairs after stairs and finally we reached this door. Our teacher opened it and suddenly I saw this huge place

with seats attached to the wall. At first I was scared of the height; it looked like I was going to fall because the seats were kind of steep. Vannie and Gurleen 7A

silence is just a little part of what we owe them. I’m proud of what our soldiers did for our country. I won’t forget, will you? Harnoor 6B

On Remembrance Day we had an assembly where we sat quietly and reflected on the sacrifices made by our soldiers in war. Then Mr. Sawicki told us a story about his grandfather being in the war. Mr. Nowak showed us a slide show while he was talking. Also, Mrs. Grasby showed us a clip that had some of her grade 8 students in it, where they dramatized journals written by children during World War 1. It was sad to listen to the terrible things that some children and their families went through. Next, Mrs. McMullen showed us a music video called “A Pittance of Time”. After the music video she called up two students from each class to put up the wreaths that

the classes had created. They were very beautiful. Then some students from grade 6 came up and read some quotes that were meaningful. At the end, we were silent for a minute to show respect for the soldiers that fought for our country. When this silent moment came, we took it as a time to think about everything our Canadian soldiers had done. A quote that we will always remember in our hearts is, “If we don’t end war, war will end us”, by H.G. Wells. ~Zainab, Harnoor and Jasmin 6B

This day should be celebrated by everyone, no matter what religion or race. We are so lucky that we have freedom, so many people were killed regardless of whether they were innocent or not. From elders to babies were shown no mercy. On this day all we ask is for everyone to stand in silence for a minute and remember what the soldiers had to go through to protect and save us. Also to remember all those lives that were taken. Try and think what they went through. Some received a letter saying that the ones they loved wouldn’t come back; they had sacrificed themselves for everyone's protection. It takes so much courage to leave behind your loved ones, knowing that you might not come back. Even if some soldiers did come back, most of them were traumatized after all that they had seen. I've read a few stories where the soldiers that came back would have nightmares and wake up screaming in terror. War happens and we can’t stop it, but we should learn to respect everyone who died in it. Samin 8F

ESL Trip to the Humber College Pow Wow

On November 19, 2012, Ms. Brubacher and the ESL students went to Humber College with some of the Morning Star kids. At Humber College, we saw Aboriginal dances and they even let us dance in the inter-tribal Pow Wow. After the dances, they were giving out t-shirts and a gift card. Lots of people wanted the gift card and the t-shirt, but Ms. Brubacher and a teacher from Morning Star got them. The First Nations people wore costumes that were made of feathers and bells and sang and drummed in drumming circles. We made new friends and had so much fun!! ~ Arshdeep 6F

Mask Making

Well, the day we started the mask making project I personally was questioning how I would do this. But with the help of my homeroom teacher, Ms. McMullen, this project was simple as pie! Things got bad when the mask was ruined by someone in another class. Luckily, I had a plan which was to even the sides up but it didn't really work out for me. The mask wasn't completely destroyed though, so we covered it with masking tape and went on to the next step which was to paint the mask. It went much more smoothly than the beginning. The paint I used was orange for the base undercover, red for the flames and lastly black for the eye covers. In the end the mask turned out to be quite an amazing project to enjoy. Darjot 7E

Lincoln Links The Grade 8s had a wonderful time on Nov. 28th attending the "Lincoln Band Concert" at Lincoln Alexander Secondary School. They also enjoyed learning about their high school course options when the Lincoln Guidance Team visited Darcel in November. Student Council Darcel Student Council teachers are excited to welcome the successful student candidates for Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, Secretary and Treasurer.
