& JOINERYPRODUCTION Online Advantage
After a number of meetings with
Altendorf’s UK Regional Sales Director
St John Crabtree and a visit to the
company’s headquarters at Minden in
Germany, a distribution agreement has
been reached with Nottingham based
woodworking machinery specialist
suppliers Daltons to promote the world
renowned Altendorf range of Sliding
Table Panel Saws.
Alex Dalton and Sales Director Andy
Walsh made the visit to Germany and were
enthusiastic about the professionalism and
organisation of the manufacturers and the
precision and quality of the machines. Andy
commented “We have been looking for some
time now for a really high quality Sliding
Table Saw and it does not get any better than
Altendorf who are probably the most famous
name in the world for machines of this type.
We will shortly have in our Nottingham
showroom at least two of the models, the top
of the range high precision F45 and, in a
particularly attractive price category, the
WA80. We will however be offering the full
range of Altendorf equipment which with its
many variants encompasses equipment to
suit almost any requirement.”
Daltons will arrange delivery, offloading and
installation services as required and the
machines will be fully commissioned by
experienced engineers. Aftercare will be
provided by their countrywide Support Services
Division but as Andy says, “The quality of the
machines is so high that we do not expect to
have to make many after sales visits”.

away from the fact that we are living in
the digital age.
The recent series of postal strikes has, of
course, reinforced the advantage of being
online. We have been concerned that
readers might not receive their copy of the

whilst we understand that it is no
replacement for the traditional magazine we
are pleased to be in a position to offer the
option of viewing it online particularly
during these difficult times.
The advantage of the website is that there
is a direct link to contributors websites
together with a comprehensive website

The flat-pack furniture industry is
entering a new era of robotized
flexible manufacturing and ABB
Robotics is helping world leaders like
IKEA create new fully automated
production lines and reap a rapid
return on investment.
IKEA, consistently ranked the world’s top
home furnishings brand, is leading the way
in automated furniture manufacturing,
much as it did with the concept of flat pack
or ready-to-assemble furniture when it was
launched in the 1960s.
The company is enjoying strong and
sustained growth, selling Scandinavian-
style home furnishings and house wares in
more than 270 stores in 36 countries across
Europe, Asia, the Middle East and North
America, and opening dozens of new stores
each year.
To cut transportation costs, it uses flat
packaging for many products which
customers assemble themselves at home.
The company also designs its own
furniture, which is made by about 1,300
suppliers in more than 50 countries.
To meet this boom in growth, IKEA – via
its wholly owned subsidiary Swedwood
International – is planning to double its
manufacturing capacity within the next five
years and has signed a frame agreement
with ABB for robotic solutions that will
enable it to produce flat-pack furniture
speedily, flexibly and efficiently at low cost.
ABB has already supplied Swedwood
International’s existing 35 factories with
robotic solutions and a variety of power and
automation products and systems, from
complete factory electrification solutions to
distributed control systems and factory
automation platforms.
The new frame agreement covers a broad
sweet of robotics products for painting,
packing and palletising applications, as well
as IRC5 controllers, PickMaster software
and advanced vision-guided technologies.
Two of the most widely employed
applications in ‘flat pack’ are the automatic
palletising of the packs, using ABB’s
dedicated 4-axis palletising robots, and the
polishing and coating of the edges of
wooden panels.
The robotic edge coating facilities uses
large 6-axis robots to polish the edges of the
panels using large brushes to smooth the
surface and remove dust. Following this
dedicated painting robots coat the stacks of
panels with a finishing lacquer.

A Striebig Compact vertical panel saw
has proved the ideal solution to Corian
sheet cutting problems at a Midlands-
based building and refurbishment
company.
BRIK Contracting, of Daventry, part of the
BRIK Group, is a bespoke manufacturer and
fitter of timber, joinery, Corian and acrylic
items for retail and commercial interiors. Its
growing customer base includes major
players in the financial and leisure
industries.
The Striebig Compact has replaced a
German-made vertical panel saw in the
Corian fabrication shop that was not
delivering accurate results.
Operations manager Mark Thallon said:
“The saw wasn’t cutting square and was up
to 5mm out on some cuts. Because of this
problem the supplier had to keep coming
out to reset the machine and we were faced
with increasing amounts of downtime.”
The Striebig was bought largely on the
recommendation of Corian fabricator Ivan
Barker. “I had used Striebig saws for about
20 years in other jobs and was familiar with
their build quality and accuracy. When it was
decided to replace the German machine I
strongly suggested we bought one.”
The Swiss-made Compact is an entry-level
machine that enables small and medium
sized business to move into the world of
precision quality vertical panel saws. It
combines exemplary ergonomics and high
quality visual appearance with unmatched
functionality
The Compact 5207 model chosen by BRIK
has a maximum cut size of 4600 x 2070mm
and a maximum cutting depth of 60mm.
Fitted with a 250mm diameter saw blade,
it is used chiefly to cut up 12.7mm thick
Corian sheets measuring 3680 x 760mm
into sections for use in desking, as kitchen
and bar tops and in vanity units.
It was supplied together with an optional
strip cutting gauge, which has proved useful
when cutting down-stands used in kitchen
worktops
“The Striebig is a far more robust and better
quality machine that gives us a clean cut every
time and is never inaccurate,” said Mr Barker.
“It’s also very easy to set up and use.”
When not cutting Corian sheet the
Compact sizes 25mm thick MDF and
plywood panels which are used in the Corian
components’ sub-strate. This has led to
greater productivity as two 25mm sheets can
now be put on the saw at a time.
Among other features of the saw that Mr
Barker likes are the two-part longitudinal
stops, which are handy when cutting large
and small pieces, and the simple
mechanism that allows for ultra-fast blade
changing.
“The saw’s built-in extraction is also very
effective and there’s now far less dust
around the operator than we had with the
old saw.”
The Compact, together with an Al-Ko dust
extraction unit, was supplied by Striebig’s
exclusive UK agent, T.M. Machinery Sales, of
Leicester.’
All five Compact models are now available
in versions incorporating an automatic cut
cycle facility to make them even more
productive. This feature was previously only
to be found on Striebig’s more expensive
Control models.

The BMG 500 is unique in its class for
many reasons – not least of which is its
impressive build quality using the
Homag Group’s patented ‘Sorb Tech’
mineral cast technology.
“The Sorb Tech construction process
decreases the carbon footprint of a machine
by significantly reducing the amount of
energy required to construct the frame,”
explains Simon Brooks, sales and
marketing director of Homag UK. He
continues, “The main advantage, however,
is its ability to absorb almost all vibrations
that are generated during the machining
process. This results in an incredibly high
surface quality finish on any material.”
An obvious choice for door
manufacturers, the BMG 500 has an
impressive table length of 6 metres
allowing doors to be tandem l
Vacuum cup and console positioning is
made simple by the woodWOP software
which can automatically generate cup
positions and transfer them to machine
table where LED diodes highlight the
vacuum pods and console positions. The
BMG 500 can also be fitted with Homag’s
automatic positioning system (AP) for even
greater operator comfort. Meanwhile,
Homag’s power clamp system makes door
frame production easy – it can hold
multiple components on the machine bed
for sizing, profiling, mortise and tenon as
well as mitre joints and ironmongery
preparation.
Complex staircase production is well
within the capabilities of the BMG 500. The
powerful 5-axis head is perfect for profiling
complex components such as curved
handrails with ease and the Sorb Tech
construction, with it’s optimum vibration
damping properties, permits high feed
rates, even on the most intricate of tool
paths. A wide range of clamping systems is
available for newel post machining as well
as for window production.
Automatic positioning of vacuum pads
and component location makes light work
of stair string routing. This is aided by
overhead laser projection systems
particularly suitable for accurately
positioning curved strings on the machine
table.
Available in both matrix table and
console formats, the BMG 500 is ideal for
window production. It features extremely
rigid construction, high quality machining
capabilities and a wide range of clamping
systems.
The powerClamp system can be used for
four sided machining processes without the
need for repositioning the material. This is
particularly useful for arched window
components and also for converting PAR
materials into fully machined, ready to
assemble components in one program. The
extensive choice of tool changers available
for the BMG 500 means it can be custom
configured for each customer.

SCM present their latest range of
Gantry CNC Machining Centres with
the model Accord 40, a new range of
machining centres with a sturdy
mobile portal structure, the result of
the latest SCM research into the CNC
routing machine sector. The ACCORD
40 range is available in various
solutions with either a multi-function
table or a bar and pod table.
Designed using the best three-
dimensional solid modelling systems, the
structure is composed of a machine bed
and a mobile gantry made of electro-welded
steel. All mechanical machining of
component parts are performed on high
quality CNC machining centres with one
single positioning operation to guarantee
the very best planar, perpendicular and
precise tolerances.
With a fixed worktable and mobile portal
structure with a component passage of up
to 330 mm, these are the characteristics that
allow ACCORD 40 to reach the highest
degree of precision and end product
finishing quality levels, even for the largest
machining areas of up to a length of
7250mm and a width of 2280mm.
A wide range of 3 and
5-axis working units,
equipped with several
types of tool changing
magazines, make the
ACCORD 40 the
most suitable
machine for high levels of
flexible production, such as solid wood or
panel door machining, staircase processing
and plastic and light alloy machining.
The 5-axis Prisma K routing machining
head has a variable spindle speed of 600 to
20,000rpm with 11 KW of power achieved
at 15,000rpm again with HSK F63 tool
chucks. A dust hood with several different
positions controlled by the operating
program is included with the 5-axis head
unit. Again, a number of additional units
can be offered alongside the Prisma K head.
The control unit is an industrial numeric
control with integrated Office PC (Personal
Computer Desktop). The CNC solution
with Office PC combines all of the qualities
of numeric controls with the user-
friendliness typical of personal computers.
The Office PC allows the use of the SCM’s
Xilog Plus interface, the software developed
directly by SCM to make programming fast
and simple even for the less experienced
operators and to enable the access to the
SCM Teleservice system.
The X, Y and Z axes are all interpolating
with axis travel using brushless motors,
with rapid traverse of X and Y axes at 75
metres / minute and Z axis at 30 metres /
minute, with full automatic lubrication
included.
The tried and tested high performance
SCM multifunction worktable ensures high
vacuum capacity distributed
uniformly and
permitting the high
quality “Nesting”
machining of
components from
sheets.
ACCORD 40 also ensures higher
productivity thanks to the possibility of
pendulum machining. The operator can
have access to the machine from three sides
of the worktable, the loading and unloading
of work-pieces is both easy and ergonomic.
ACCORD 40 can also be integrated into
different levels of production with loading
and unloading automation enabling it to
become a completely Automatic Machining
Cell. Stand alone machines can be fed
manually or by a simple vacuum lift, but
SCM are now installing Accord machines
with a variety of handling solutions to
minimise labour, especially when jumbo
size sheets are to be used. Automatic
Conveyors can be located at the infeed to
allow panels to be fed to the
machine table,
one at a time,
whether in-line or
at 90 degrees
depending upon
the floor space
available.
At the outfeed of the Accord, again
various solutions can be offered to remove
the machined components, with tables to
sort out the components for stacking while
the next panel is already being machined on
the table of the Accord.

Dust Pollution Systems, a UK
innovator and leader in the design and
installation of wood waste extraction,
waste to heat and process air systems,
has recently commissioned a facility at
the newly relocated staircase
manufacturing plant of M H Joinery
Products plc in Somerset. This new
plant has been specifically designed to
remove wood waste, provide high
quality dust-free process air, lessen the
company's carbon footprint, reduce
energy consumption and enhance
component finish.
MH Joinery Product plc manufacture
high-end windows, casements and
staircases for builders and developers
requiring the very best in design and
performance. The company's staircase
manufacturing had for many years, taken
place some distance from it's main
location. When an adjacent site became
available it was decided to take advantage of
the opportunity to relocate staircase
production. Having all output in one
location meant that the company was able
to improve operational and administrative
efficiency.
The newly available site, although old
and in need of complete refurbishment,
offered the advantage that production could
be laid out in tune with current and future
needs. In combination with a newly
configured manufacturing plant, MH
Joinery Products also wanted to ensure that
its wood waste extraction would meet and
exceed current requirements. Dust
pollution Systems had previously installed
extraction systems for MH Joinery, and
given its fault-free operation, Dust Pollution
Systems were asked to install and
commission the extraction facility for the
relocated stairs plant.
Even though the extraction of wood waste
was the primary objective, MH Joinery
Products also needed to install a heating
system for the entire premises. Initial
energy candidates were either oil or gas.
Because a supply of clean dust-free process
air was also required, Dust Pollution
Systems suggested and installed an
extraction system designed to supply an on-
site heat from waste facility. The system
was planned and executed in line with a
carefully scheduled machine transference
schedule from the old to the new factory.
This ensured minimal disruption to output.
A wood fired plant was installed, together
with a chipper so that all waste and off-cuts
could be utilized. This enabled MH Joinery
Products to both remove and re-use wood
waste and in so doing it is now
independent from rising fuel costs and
supply interruptions. The process air flow
designed by Dust Pollution Systems
ensures that a pressure is maintained that
matches input with extraction. This
guarantees that all parts of the staircase
factory experience minimal air speed
reducing air-born dust for better a finish
quality.

is a dedicated area for the production of
large tooling jigs, including the specialised
fabrication of major aircraft assembly jigs.
When Brookhouse Tooling decided to
upgrade its existing dust extraction plant,
by installing a dedicated system to serve the
pattern and moulds section, Dust Control
Systems Ltd were invited to discuss the
company’s changing requirements and
recommend an effective solution. The
workshop, which utilises a variety of
classical woodworking machines, including
double head sanders, bandsaws and jig
borers, required a total air volume of
around 7,000m3/hr to effectively extract
the wood and composite dust generated.
Following a thorough evaluation of
Brookhouse’s site and production facilities,
DCS engineers proposed an additional
externally located filter, utilising a direct-
driven 7.5kW fan unit. They installed an
ATEX-certified modular shaker filter
system, with quick-release galvanised waste
collection bins. And, thanks to a unique
filter media that provides improved filtering
efficiency and low energy consumption,
together with a low-noise fanset that
consumes 30% less energy than traditional
fans, the system provides effective
extraction, is quiet in operation and
extremely economical to run.
Steve Thomas, who heads up production
at Brookhouse Tooling, says: “The new dust
plant was installed with minimal disruption
to production, and we are very pleased with
the performance; it’s a robust and well-
engineered system which satisfies the
demands of our busy pattern shop, and
fully meets our requirement for an efficient
and inherently safe system.”

Filtration came to the
rescue of The Natural
History Museum in
London by supplying a
refurbished dust
extraction system.
The Natural History
Museum carry out a lot of
in-house manufacture of
display cabinets to suit many
of their exhibits, but the
application means they came
up against one rather dusty
problem. As a consequence of
cutting, grinding and
sanding, it meant large
amounts of dust were
created and
Buckinghamshire based
company Cityarch called on
the expertise of Airtec
Filtration to come to their
rescue. Airtec Filtration
designed and supplied a
small-refurbished DCE
Donaldson extraction
system installed by
Cityarch that offered
2,300m3/hr of airflow. It is
the second time Cityarch had
called upon Airtec to offer a
cost-effective and efficient
solution.
The Natural History Museum were
pleased to benefit from the cost savings of
opting for refurbished equipment but with
their own clear vision for restoring pieces of
history and being ‘green’, it only seemed
right to do a little restoring and recycling of
their own with the help of Airtec Filtration.

Monarch Equestrian Ltd, a leading
manufacturer in the design and
fabrication of exclusive ‘top end’
stables and equestrian equipment has
chosen Wood Waste Technology Ltd. to
supply and install a wood waste heater
for their production facility. The
WT15 wood waste heater, which suited
Monarchs application, produces
around 145kw/hr (500,000btu/hr) of
heat into the workshop, and will
dispose of a large skip of off cuts per
week, saving approximately £6000 per
annum in skip charges and a further
£3000- £4000 on gas bills making the
payback period around 12 months.
Customers can then look forward to
savings somewhere in the region of
£50,000 over the next five years.
Managing Director, Russell Holliday
looked at a few different options and
suppliers but chose Wood Waste
Technology due to their excellent
reputation, well known outstanding after
sales service and keen prices. Mr Holliday
explained, “Many people do not realise
exactly how much money is spent on skip
charges and heating costs per year and the
figure is quite frightening when worked out
over a long period. I have been looking for a
reliable wood waste heater for some time
and after viewing many different models
actually working on site and visiting the
manufacturing facility chose Wood Waste
Technology, mainly due to glowing reports
from their customers, and also the well-
built and heavy-duty design of the unit. I
was also pleasantly surprised to find that as
manufacturers of their own equipment they
were the most competitively priced units in
the marketplace.”
Managing Director of Wood Waste
Technology, Kurt Cockroft comments,” we
believe in providing very affordable
solutions to ever increasing waste and
heating charges and keeping payback
periods to a minimum. We also pride
ourselves on our outstanding after sales
and service departments, which we believe,
is more important than the initial sale itself.
We also service all types of wood waste
heaters and supply genuine spares at up to
60% cheaper than our nearest competitor.”
The WT range are fully certified to be
installed in clean air zones without the use
of an afterburner, this will save
approximately a further £2500 on the initial
cost and £2000 per annum in running
costs compared to competitors units,
making the payback period the quickest in
the market place today.
Wood Waste Technology manufactures a
wide range of heaters from small hand fired
units to fully
automatic systems to
suit virtually all sizes
of companies.

WOODWASTEWood Burners
Wood Waste Technology Provides aSolution to Monarch
NEWSWOODWASTEWood Burners
As summer turns rapidly into autumn
now is the perfect time to consider
installing a workshop wood burning
stove to turn your offcuts and sawdust
into fuel.
The latest generation of workshop stoves
are cost effective, easy to install,
environmentally friendly and can burn all
types of wood waste from solid pieces of
timber to sawdust.
A workshop stove will pay for itself within a
very short time when you combine the costs
of gas, oil or electricity with the landfill tax
charges business have to pay contractors to
remove wood waste.
From an environmental point of view
burning wood is considered to be carbon
neutral – so businesses with workshops
stoves will significantly reduce their carbon
footprints.
Workshop wood burners differ from the
type of stoves used in homes. They have been
specifically designed to burn wood offcuts
and sawdust and this is achieved through a
unique combustion air tube which runs from
the top to the bottom of the stove. Sawdust
cannot be burned in domestic wood burners
because it will extinguish the flames.
Workshop stoves are available in a range of
different sizes depending on the dimensions
of the premises to be heated. A compact 4Kw
Greenheart stove can comfortably heat up to
65 cubic metres whilst an 18kw version
delivers enough heat for up to 250 cubic
metres.
Commented Sune Nightingale, director of
leading wood burning stove online retailer,
workshopstoves.co.uk: “We have been selling
workshop stoves now for over five years but
have seen a significant rise in demand during
the past twelve months. Businesses are
looking harder at their overheads and it
makes complete sense for them to combine
saving money on fuel with the environmental
benefits of re-cycling 100% of their waste
wood products.
“During the peak in fuel prices the demand
for wood offcuts by consumers to be used as
fuel for domestic wood burning stoves
rocketed – but it makes little sense to sell off
all your own wood as fuel for somebody else
and then have to pay higher electricity, oil or
gas prices to heat your own premises!” he
continued.
Installation is simple but should be carried
out by a competent person.
It is important to seek advice before
purchasing a workshop stove to ensure
aspects such as ventilation and insulation are
dealt with correctly. Reputable suppliers such
as workshopstoves.co.uk employ technical
experts to help customers choose the right
stoves and flue system to suit their particular
workshops.
For example, if your workshop uses
machinery which produces fine dust,
extractors should be fitted to the equipment to
prevent the atmosphere being filled with fine
particles of sawdust which could be ignited by
the stove or other heat producing machinery.
Installing a workshop stove could also help
you to win more business. Most tender
documents include a section on your
environmental policies and being able to state
that you re-cycle all of your waste by
converting it into green energy could give you
a competitive edge.
Carpenter Oak Case Study
Specialist timber frame company,
Carpenter Oak operates from a three-acre site
in Totnes in Devon. The company employs
20 carpenters in six workshops to create high
quality contemporary structures for
customers throughout the world.
All of the heating in the workshops is
generated by workshopstoves.co.uk’s
Greenheart workshop stoves, many of which
have been installed since Carpenter Oak was
established twenty years ago. Solid wood and
sawdust is burned throughout the day, with
each workshop stove fuelled by a metre
square bag of wood per week.
Said Paul Kirkup, Carpenter Oak’s director
of timber design: “Right from the very
beginning we could see the logic of turning
our waste wood into energy. We have saved a
great deal of money throughout the years
particularly during times when traditional
fuel costs were high.
The stoves are easy to use and give off
more than enough heat for the workshops.
They couldn’t be easier to use – just light
them in the morning and leave them to
quietly die out overnight.”
Now Carpenter Oak and
workshopstoves.co.uk technical experts are
looking at the next project – generating
electricity though a steam boiler heated by a
workshop stove. “In our work we are forward
thinking and creative, so it makes sense to
take our use of waste wood to the next level”
added Paul.

RanHeat manufacture a wide range of wood combustion equipment from 150 kW up to 4MW in output. Over the last two years over 95% of ranheat's projects have beenGovernment funded under the Carbon Trust interest free loan scheme. Under the scheme
companies within the woodworking industry can receive up to £100,000 ( £200,000 In NorthernIreland) interest free for up to 4 years, the loan is unsecured and has no arrangement fee.
With the huge increases in the costs of Oil and Gas during the last heating season and the ever risingcost of landfill demand for RanHeat equipment has doubled over the last 12 months. The governmentincentive via the Carbon Trust has enabled many companies to invest in this energy and cost savingequipment without having to find any capital outlay. In many cases the loan repayment each month isless that the skip bill add to this the savings in heating and you soon have a scheme that pays backquicker than the 5 years required under the carbon trust scheme.
RanHeat have also developed a new bunker silo system designed to fit under existing Dust ExtractionFilters mounted on steel work. The bunker is a direct replacement for the skip normally used in this situation.

Steve Matuska at Dustraction reports
that the Health & Safety Executive is
now seeking to further improve the
monitoring of all waste extraction
from individual machines. This takes
the form of fitting flow gauges within
ductwork serving individual hoods to
ensure that the operator is easily able
to check and monitor extraction
performance and to ensure that
adequate air flow is maintained at all
times.
Due to the variable pressures
encountered at hoods serving different
machine types, ideal pressure requirements
need to be established and the correct flow
gauge to handle the range selected to allow
pressure levels to be accurately measured
and maintained at each point. It is
important also that flow gauges permit
adequate adjustment to guarantee that
pressures can be maintained within the
specified range after installation.
Dustraction, says Steve Matuska,
supplies an ideal range of flow gauge
instruments with simple red and green
markings which provide an easy-to-read
indication of extraction performance.
These allow extraction systems, like this
new installation at Manor High School in
Leicester, to be effectively maintained in
line with Health & Safety Executive
requirements at all times.
To assist companies with compliance,
Dustraction is also offering a service for the
supply, fit and commissioning of flow
gauges including a full COSHH LEV (Local
Exhaust Ventilation) testing and
maintenance package.
The latter encompasses
all makes of equipment
together with the supply,
where appropriate, of a
full range of spares from
Dustraction as well as
those by other original
equipment
manufacturers.
Parts supplied by
Dustraction, says Steve
Matuska, will have
material specifications
identical to or better
than original equipment
by other makers and will
often improve the
performance of existing
extraction layouts
through advances in
filtration media and
technical specification
upgrades. A variable
range of consumables
including filter bags and
cartridges is also
available from stock at
competitive prices.
The Health & Safety Executive states that
one of the most Frequently Asked
Questions they encounter on their website
http://www.hse.gov.uk/lev/faqs.htm is: Do
I have to fit air-flow indicators to all hoods
in the LEV system? The answer, says Steve
Matuska, is that up to now there has been
no legal requirement to do so but adds that
the law now requires employers to observe
the correct level of LEV by ensuring that
adequate air flow is maintained at all times.

Based in Newton-le-Willows on
Merseyside, Starbank Panel Products
Limited are specialists in the
fabrication of high pressure
laminates, state of the art CNC
component manufacture and solid
surface fabrication supplying a variety
of industries throughout the UK.
A family run firm, established in 1976 by
Gordon & Kathleen Darbyshire, the
company is now looked after by its hands-
on Managing Director, Phil Darbyshire.
Originally employing just 6 staff and
operating out of rented premises in Appley
Bridge near Wigan, today’s Starbank has
grown to employ just under 90 staff and
has expanded into purpose built premises
on a 3 acre site with over 70,000 sq ft of
production space on the Sankey Valley
Industrial Estate.
As the company grew over the years,
investment has been focused on finding the
right people and machinery to allow this
success to continue and their factory now
houses some of the most sophisticated
panel processing machinery in the UK and
as part of this investment, Schelling UK
Limited were proud and pleased to install a
new FT-H 430 saw in December 2008.
The installation included in-feed rollers
with 90 degree angular transfer for multi-
directional in-feed so that material can be
loaded via fork lift or from an automated
storage system. Another feature chosen by
Starbank was the vacuum in-feed with
aligning table which prevents surface
damage of the laminates and guarantees
the squaring of the book.
The machine also has an internal
turntable allowing head cuts which utilises
the boards to their max. The hard
chromed machine table which Starbank
have chosen protects delicate surfaces from
being scratched and the FT 430 also has the
Schelling “third blade” edge scorer for post-
formed and soft-formed components giving
a chip free cut throughout.
At the out-feed stage, the high pressure
air tables can cope with heavy books of high
pressure laminates and together with the
40kw main saw motor and brass table lips,
a clean and precise cut is achieved time
after time.
The FT 430 is equipped with the latest
technology including a clamp pressure
control on the control panel to
accommodate hollow core material and an
on-line net viewer gives electrical & PLC
diagnostic around the clock with support
from Schelling UK and on-line support
from Schelling Austria.
Andy Hepworth from Schelling UK
visited Starbank Panel Products this week
and met with Phil Darbyshire and
Production Manager, Paul Atkinson, to find
out on how their investment had performed
since installation and to discuss the overall
Schelling experience.
Phil Darbyshire confirmed that the main
reason behind their choice of a Schelling
saw had been the robust build of the saw
itself and the reputation of reliability of
performance over Schelling’s competitors.
With the features chosen, he advised that
their FT430 can process all the different
materials Starbank uses from HPL
laminate boards, MDF, solid grade
laminate and chipboard. He confirmed
that after initial hesitation, the staff had
found the saw easy to use and had found
the whole material handling to be a smooth
operation. “This saw can cut any size and
any shape better due to the machine being
so robust,” commented Phil Darbyshire.
When asked which of the special features
improved performance the most, Phil and
Paul had difficulty in deciding their
favourite but Paul decided that he found
that the vacuum feed and the turntable
enhanced the overall operation of the saw
the most.
Regarding the Schelling support since
installation, Paul commented that Starbank
had been very pleased with the response
from all the Schelling team including
Markus Freuis, Schelling’s M.D. and they
would be happy to go with Schelling again.

Processing and Joinery Manufacturing
machines with several Software, Dust
Extraction, Tooling and Finance
representatives in attendance. A high number
of Classical machines were displayed from all
of the SCM ranges manufactured for the start-
up or growing businesses.
There was continued interest in SCM’s
wide range of CNC and Panel Processing
machines for kitchen, bedroom and furniture
manufacturing, and yet again, the CNC
Machining Centres, models N15 and the large
dimensioned worktable Accord 40 with its’
extensive 7320 x 2280mm table size. Both
machines proved to be big winners with the
“Nesting” of panels and doors continually
taking place. Two Accords were sold.
The latest space saving Cyflex F900 PRO
CNC Drilling and Grooving machine for
panels, especially designed for kitchen and
bedroom manufacturers and upholstered
furniture, was in continuous demonstration.
With its’ new and latest guarding, safety mats
on the floor have now been eliminated, further
reducing the floor space to less than 4.5
square metres.
The popular “Actionline” range of the
World’s best selling Record CNC Machining
Centres again proved very popular. A bar / pod
table machine, the Actionline AL TVN P,
machined various types of internal and
external doors, and it was fitted with a
dedicated, high power Universal K2 two outlet
machining head for lock and hinge recessing,
with glass and letterbox openings being
machined all in one set up.
The Record 132 NT TVN Prisma 5-axis
machine showed its versatility, machining
complex hand rails, stair strings, newel posts
and arched window components. The Windor
1 CNC Window Machining Centre on display
was being continually demonstrated, as were
the Compact NT and Superset Class Planer
Moulders, illustrating SCM’s strength in
depth within the Joinery Manufacturing sector
of the market.
Colin Simmons, SCM UK’s Solid Wood
Northern Area Sales Manager commented: “I
was very pleased with the orders and positive
enquiries taken for our wide range of solid
wood products. As well as 3 Compact and
Superset Moulders sold, our Distributors
ordered a total of 8 Sintex Four-Sided Planers
for stock, obviously having faith in the upturn
in business many are expecting.”
A large number of SCM’s Classical range of
woodworking machines were displayed,
including the top of the range L’Invincible
machines, Class and Nova models and new
Tecnomax F41 Planer and S41 Thicknessing
machines that proved of great interest to
visiting customers and SCM’s many
Distributors in attendance.
Edge Banders, including the new K130,
K300, and IDM IDI Base 100 models were
continually working and SCM’s Sandya range
of Wide Belt Sanders sanded solid wood
components and frames as well as veneered
boards, with the Sandya 16S machine sold at
the show. A top of range specification Sigma
Impact 107C Beam Saw was displayed and
demonstrated showing the high quality of cut
this machine provides.
Concluding, Gabriele De Col stated “We
were nervous about holding this Exhibition as
the market is still tough out there, but we were
very pleased with the number and quality of
visitors arriving with many existing and a
number of new customers to SCM who had
not been to see us before attending. Several
orders were taken and serious enquiries were
received, some of which we will definitely turn
into orders in the following weeks. It was a
good show.”

Biesse opened it doors to specialists in
the international woodworking sector
to show its latest technological
innovations for processing panels and
producing windows and doors.
Biesse UK invited a group of customers
consisting of both the panel and joinery
industries to Biesse’s headquarters in
Pesaro for the open two-day event.
Although Biesse are
well known for their superb panel
processing machines – the highlight of the
visit was to see first hand their introduction
into the window and door production

restricted areas. In order to increase
competitive market pressure, the Biesse
Group have engaged the application of Lean
Manufacturing principles – the methods
which via Value Flow analysis enables them
to identify and eliminate the productive and
organisational waste enabling Biesse to
strengthen its leadership and anticipate
new market demands.
Last but not least, was the DIGIPAC
system – an automatic stretch film-binding
machine for packaging with a rotating arm
beneath the work surface, named the
CinetiC.

NEWSPROFILESanders
Small workshop businesses are
increasingly seeking thicknessing and
finishing sanding solutions which
combine versatility, productivity and
high quality machining, and at the
same time within their budget.
SCM’s new model SANDYA 9S, the
latest compact sander from SCM, is a
highly versatile machine which can be used
for thicknessing MDF, chipboard, etc., plus
thicknessing and sanding of solid wood,
pre-sanding and sanding veneered panels
and the finishing of painted or lacquered
surfaces.
The machine is available in two working
widths of 1100 and 1350 mm, with two or
three main machining/sanding heads
which can even be fitted with independent
motors for maximum power usage.
The abundant standard kit, including
2620 mm long
sanding belts, together with the huge range
of optional items, means that any type of
machining and sanding can be undertaken,
even curing the most complex and
problematic items.
SANDYA 9S can be equipped with an
electronic sectional pad with a 30mm
centre-to-centre between sections which,
allowing high precision and therefore a
high quality finish, is the best solution for
sanding panels which have a shaped profile
or for narrow work pieces.
SANDYA 9S optional items include:-
• sanding rollers with 250 and 300 mm
diameters
• vacuum hold-down worktable
• electronically-controlled oscillating
blowers
• work piece cleaning and satinising units

and conveyor feed speed
• reverse rotation of sanding belts
SANDYA 9S can also
be set up with floating
pressure shoes which
improves and evens out
the pressure applied to
the work pieces and are
ideal for thicknessing
with heavy stock
removal, or for
machining short and
thin work pieces and
large panels, even if
they are warped.

Nottingham based woodworking
machinery distributors and
manufacturers Daltons offer Sanding
Machines to suit a wide variety of
applications.
The company manufacture Disc, Belt and
Contour Sanders for engineering and pattern
making industries as well as a wide variety of
woodwork applications under the Phillipson
label but for some years now have also held
the sold UK distributorship for the Houfek
range of Wide Belt and Edge Sanders
manufactured in the Czech Republic.
These all-European Sanders incorporate
wide belt sizes from 600 mm to 1650 mm,
various combinations of sanding heads from
single to three or more belts and specifications
to suit the joinery, cabinet-making or furniture
industries.
Sales Director Andy Walsh says: “The
immediately obvious build quality, simplistic
design and technical capability of these
machines makes them stand out from the
crowd. We are able to demonstrate the
machines when
required and
prospective customers
are impressed by the
ease of operation,
minimal maintenance
and, lets face it, the
pure strength of the
Houfek equipment.”
He added “We have
been supplying these
machines for some
years now under both the
Diplomat and Houfek labels and very
rarely have cause for after-sales visits.
Accordingly we have complete
confidence in supplying this range which
incidentally has the added benefit of being
priced at a very reasonable level. The Sanders
represent amazing value for money and have
had a major impact on our sales where this
type of machine is concerned.”
Daltons generally have the 600 mm model
SPB630C and 1100 mm model SPB1100C
single belt versions, both
incorporating calibrating
roller and pad, power
rise/ fall, digital readouts,
etc, available for viewing
and demonstration at
their Nottingham
showrooms and details
of the full range, which
includes models with both
rise and fall tables and
alternatively rise and fall
sanding heads, can be
obtained from the Sales
Department:
Until now, modern woodworking and
furniture businesses that own an
automatic calibrating wide belt
sanding machine have found combined
roller / pad units to be an ideal blend
of versatility and machining quality
that also meant low investment costs.
Because there is a growing need among
small businesses to satisfy an ever-more
diversified demand, SCM has developed the
innovative System Five Unit, available on
the Model Sandya 5S.
This new machining unit consists of two
rollers (the second is of an increased
diameter) and an intermediate pad, also
available in the sectioned electronic version,
all with independent positioning. This
solution ensures exceptional versatility,
thus allowing manufacturers, for an
investment only slightly higher than that
needed for traditional combined
units, to meet even the most
diverse machining requirements.
The new unit can, in fact, carry
out 5 different machining tasks.
The first roller only for
calibration, first roller and pad or
first roller and second roller for
calibration and subsequent
sanding, second roller only or
pad only for a wide variety of
sanding tasks.
All this done on a single
machining head, the application
range of which spans from solid
wood to veneered and painted surfaces,
ideal for doors, windows, kitchens,
furniture and fittings, etc. The Sandya 5S
also allows the System Five to be preceded
by a roller unit to broaden its application
range even further.
The new Sandya 5S with
System Five is perfect for
small workshops and
companies looking to satisfy
an ever-more varied demand
that requires extremely
versatile machining solutions
of outstanding quality.

High Quality European SandersFrom Daltons
When specialist cabinet maker, Peter R
Hall, decided to up-grade its sanding
capability the company evaluated
machines from Germany, Italy and
Switzerland in search of the piece of
equipment that would deliver exactly
what it was looking for.
“Our business was expanding into larger
contracts and higher quality veneering
work,” explains Peter Hall, founder of the
business. He continues, “Competitors were
investing in sophisticated wide belt
sanders so we had to find a machine that
would give us an edge.
“We deal in excellence. Most of our work
is one-off bespoke furniture for the London
and export markets. As a consequence, we
needed a sander that not only delivered
first class results, but also gave us the
flexibility to handle everything from solid
wood and veneers to lacquer sanding for a
perfect finish.
“When it came down to finding the right
solution, there was quite a lot of choice.
Some of the larger machines, however,
need more space and power to achieve
similar results as the Bütfering SKO 213CC
we finally settled on.
“The Bütfering is a very compact
machine, which is a great advantage for us
as space is a premium in our workshop. It
is also very easy to use and saves us huge
amounts of time compared to the old pad
sander we used to rely on.
“Above all though, it is the consistent
quality of every work piece that we run
through the machine that is so impressive.
For our business consistency is vital; with
the Bütfering, we know we can rely on it.
Whether it is calibrating raw boards prior
to veneering, sanding veneered and
wooden composite pieces or de-nibbing, it
delivers excellent results without fail.
“Working with leading interior designers
and architects, some of the pieces we
produce are far from standard shapes and

Peter Hall’s Quest for Excellence
The Bütfering SKO 213 CC – quality you can depend on
Quick and easy belt changing
sizes. In the past, that has meant laborious
work on the pad sander. Now we can load
all kinds of shapes and sizes onto the
Bütfering’s vacuum bed and there are no
issues – unlike some of the other
machines we tested which produced such
problems as rounded-off edges on the long
sides of work pieces.”
Before purchasing the sander, Hall
visited Homag UK’s Castle Donington
show room, taking with him “a stack of
different work pieces to test”. He went
away impressed. Before making the final
decision however, he wanted to reassure
himself the investment would be
worthwhile and so returned again with yet
another pile of work pieces, including
lacquered veneers to de-nib, to assess the
machine.
The two heads on the SKO 213CC enable
most jobs to be completed in one pass.
Precise calibrating is achieved with the
contact roller on the first head, whilst
additional stock can be removed by using
both contact rollers. Sanding of solid wood
can also be done with one pass by using
the contact roller of the first head and the
segmented pad of the variable speed
second head.
For veneered work pieces, one pass
results are achieved by using both
segmented pads, whilst lacquer sanding
uses just the segmented pad of the second
head. Precise digital timing and a standard
segment width of 35mm ensure ‘anti-
dubbing’ all around the panel,
guaranteeing crisp, square edges.
“The team at Homag were great,”
continues Hall. “Nothing was too much
trouble and they even put together a
finance package that spread the cost of
buying the machine over five years. It was
unreal; they made it so easy for me,
without exerting any pressure whatsoever.”
The sander was installed into Hall’s
premises in a day and two of the work
force were trained on operating the
machine so that it was up and running
profitably from the off. Hall again, “The
Bütfering has driven our business to a new
level. It has given us the ability to attract
new customers by offering a full (and
quick turn-around) veneering and sanding
service.
“The cost benefit analysis we carried out
prior to purchasing the sander suggested
significant time savings would be made
and it has certainly delivered those and
more. The real benefit for us though, is the
quality of the finish we can consistently
deliver. It has eliminated the need for any
hand finishing, even with interlocked grain
or other awkward timbers.
“The Bütfering is so easy to operate via
its touch screen. We are constantly amazed
at what can be achieved with it and I
certainly wouldn’t hesitate to recommend
it to anybody wanting a high quality,
reliable sander,” concludes Hall.

In 1977 David Orton set up a small
workshop literally at the end of his
garden, this being the early
beginnings of the realisation of
David’s passion for the design and
construction of quality bespoke
furniture.
Within 5 years the demand for the
furniture produced by David Orton
Interiors had grown through
recommendation and ‘word of mouth’,
resulting in the business employing
additional skilled craftsmen to cater for this
increasing demand.
The mid 1990’s saw the company move
to modern industrial premises situated in
Shrewsbury and currently employ 9 highly
skilled craftsmen, most of whom have been
with the company for many years.
In 2006 having attended the UK’s
largest woodworking machinery exhibition
at Birmingham NEC, one of the stands
David visited was that of the wide belt and
edge sanding machinery specialist Kundig.
Having had a demonstration on the
1100mm wide twin belt Premium-2, it was
quickly realised that this machine could
comfortable be incorporated into the busy
working environment and easily used by
any of the operators to ensure a consistent
and accurate surface finish.
The fixed bed of the machine used with
an out feed support table would alleviate
the need for a second operator whilst the
‘Enormatic’ setting device allows the
machine to automatically measure the
thickness of the material and then remove
the pre determined stock to give the
finished size. This coupled with the
automatic start of the feed belt eliminated
the need for the operator to return to the
control panel, particularly advantageous
when dealing with larger panels etc.
Shortly after the exhibition an order was
placed for the purchase of the twin belt
sander along with a Kundig Uniq double-
sided edge sander complete with bobbin
attachment for sanding curved
components.
Since the installation of the machines,
the Kundig Uniq edge sander has proved
the most versatile and most used machine
in the workshop and has been declared as
‘the favourite machine’ by the work force
who use it for fine finishing of both straight
and curved edges and also due to the tilting
of the abrasive accurately sand relief angles
to in frame doors.

Bellissimo has scored yet another
industry first with Sorrento - a range
of high gloss acrylic foil doors in
bespoke sizes and seven colours. For
the first time in the UK, acrylic high
gloss foil, which gives a superb mirror
finish but at a fraction of the cost of
solid acrylic or high press laminate
(HPL), is available in bespoke sizes, and
in a wide range of colours.
Such is the quality of acrylic foil, that it
is used by premium German brands, but
never before have made-to-measure fascias
in this material been available to the
industry at large.
Sorrento comes in white, black, cream,
cappuccino, aubergine, burgundy red and
grey, and is PVC edged.
Bellissimo managing director Warnock
Watson said: “Previously, the best option
for a bespoke, affordable alternative to solid
acrylic or HPL was a polyester painted
finish. But now that we can offer made-to-
measure high gloss foil in a two-week
turnaround, we have a better looking, more
competitive solution, which will allow
retailers and manufacturers to put a
sensible price tag on qualities and options
that would previously only be associated
with a very high-end product.”

Bellissimo Brings Bespoke High GlossWithin Reach
Three young Blum employees
participated this year at the 40th
WorldSkills Interna-tional in
Calgary/Canada. They had qualified
for this major occupational event -
which takes place once every two years
- through their previous victory at
the Austrian championships. Already
extremely accustomed to success, the
hardware manufac-turer Blum in
Höchst (Austria) has once again added
to its 22 strong medal collection:
Benjamin Poredos received a gold
medal competing with all CNC-turners
and also se-cured the national victory
gaining him a second. Polytechnician
Benjamin Grabherr won the silver
medal. Lukas Winkler came in fifth
place for mould making and re-ceived
a certificate of achievement*.
This current championship
clearly shows that the best
professionals worldwide were all
able to achieve nearly the same
outstanding results. Particularly for
technical oc-cupations, it is often
thousandths of a millimetre that
determine who wins a medal, so
good training and thorough
championship preparation play an
important role. There-fore, a special
thanks is directed at everyone who
has helped, who has – partly be-
hind the scenes – performed
exemplary work.
Certificates of achievement were
awarded to participants gaining a total
number of points superior to that of the
group average.

Sustainability is built into the fabric of
Blum – both the company and the
products.
The exceptional geographic setting that
surrounds Blum’s seven factories is central to
their inherent attitude to environmental
responsibilities. Situated in the most western
Vorarlberg province of Austria, the Blum
factories nestle around the beautiful eastern
shores of Lake Constance in the foothills of the
Vorarlberg Alps. When founder Julius Blum
started the company over 50 years ago, his
original blacksmith’s forge was in the centre of
the village (now town) of Hoechst and all
subsequent Blum buildings and
manufacturing facilities have grown up in
rural/urban areas with residential properties all
around. All of this ensures that Blum’s
planners and management have all been
acutely aware of the impact their presence has
on all those around them – many of them
being Blum staff.
So, progressively, Blum have developed
environmental management and planning
systems that encompass all of their activities,
extend to final product planning and usage and
are embraced by the sales subsidiaries and
other manufacturing and supply hubs
elsewhere in the world.
This has led to the company being ISO14001
Environmentally Certified that involves
continued internal and external audits.
As Blum has expanded they have introduced
new methods to aspects of their activities and
these include building planning to reduce
material usage, improve energy saving
planning, using less energy for heating and less
water –recycling this wherever possible. A
recent case in point is the brand new 2,000
cubic metre high-bay Blum UK warehouse at
Milton Keynes which has just achieved an A
rating for carbon emissions from The Carbon
Trust.
Minimising environmental impact extends
to transportation of goods (Blum Austria
exports over 90% of production). Rail is used
where possible and supply centre have been
developed world wide to allow Blum to
minimise transport movements. Attention is
given to minimal use of packaging as well with
the re-usable ECO-Pack system employed.
Materials for actual Blum products is
carefully selected to come from responsible and
where possible re-cyclable sources and
sustainability has been built into product
design to benefit the manufacturer and end
user. In particular Blum’s tool-free assembly
technology – CLIP and INSERTA which allow
cabinet doors to be assembled and dis-
assembled on installation site and shipped
separately. This also means that kitchens can be
separated into component parts when being
disposed of ad the greater percentage of the
Blum hardware content re-cycled.
Blum – sustainable and environmental
credentials are inherent.
