It is also a major shipping channel between the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Panama which connects to the Pacific Ocean.

Important LandmarksFrench Park: French Park is located at the tip of Casco Viejo and near the French Embassy of Panama. The park was created as a monument to more than 200,000 French laborers who lost their lives during the construction of the Panama Canal.In 1907, George Washington Goethals was appointed chief engineer of the Panama Canal project by United States President Theodore Roosevelt. Previous engineers had many difficulties in finishing the project, but Goethals increased speed and reduced sickness and death among canal workers by his special attention to mosquitoes and sanitation. He is credited for the completion of the canal in 1914, almost one full year ahead of schedule. A monument that is dedicated to Goethals stands in front of the Panama Canal Administration BuildingThe tall marble structure sits in a fountain and has Goethals's name etched on it.
