How do they Compare?

Pan-Africanism• - The idea that people of

African heritage from around the world should work together to achieve freedom and equality

• Originated by W.E.B. Dubois• Goal of breaking down

barriers between blacks and whites

Black Nationalism• The belief that black people

around the world should create their own societies, separate and distinct from white societies

• Originated by Marcus Garvey• Goal of racial purity and

encouraging feelings of pride in “being black” and separate

Constructive Response QuestionOf the two approaches, which do you agree with more: Marcus Garvey’s “Back to Africa” movement which encouraged blacks to separate themselves to prove their worth independently, or W.E.B. Du Bois’ approach that blacks should work with whites, instead of separated from them, in order to achieve equality for all? Explain your answer.
