... a joy-filled Holiday Season, and good health and happiness in the New Year.
Leannah Hunt International President’s Premier Agent o: 650/752.0730 h: 650/327.1009 e: [email protected]
T his season is a special time to enjoy family, friends, and our community holiday traditions like a stroll down Palo Alto’s treasured Christmas Tree Lane. For us, it is also a time to be grateful for and thank those who have given us their support and trust, and the opportunity to be of service during the year. We are privileged to be part of this wonderful community, and look forward to being of service to you in the new year ahead. Happy Holidays!
Leannah Hunt
Laurel Hunt Robinson
Leannah Hunt & Laurel Hunt Robinson — we send our very best wishes to everyone in the community for ...
the environment,” said Director of Marketing Jill Finlayson. “A typical home receives 70 pounds of junk mail a year.”
The organization has only been around for a few months, but Finlay-son says member surveys show junk-mail piles are now lightening signifi-cantly (it can take about three months for mail to stop even after removal from a list).
“You could do much of what we do for yourself,” Finlayson said, “but we can do it with less time and energy. And we don’t just get you off the lists, we keep you off. Chances are you know someone who we’d be useful to.”
Yearly gift memberships are avail-able through www.greendimes.com for $36 (or a dime a day), and a lim-ited-time, lifetime membership, which includes the immediate planting of 240 trees, is available for $360 dol-lars.
GreenDimes members can control which lists they are removed from. Holiday mail is heavy with catalogs, and while it’s too late to ease this year’s flood, new members can look forward to a trickle next year. And according to Finlayson, GreenDimes is looking into working with compa-nies so members can receive specific mailings (say, just the holiday catalog) without getting on the list for the rest of the year.
Finlayson says GreenDimes can make anyone “look like a thoughtful gift-giver even at the last minute, and
help people keep their resolutions to get clutter under contro1!”
For those who find trees a yawn, there are other great gifts that don’t hurt the Earth. Debbie Mytels, associ-ate director of the Palo Alto environ-mental group Acterra, suggests green tags as a good gift for people who have everything. Available through www.acterra.org, green tags are renew-able energy certificates that support renewable energy sources. The Web site can calculate the carbon dioxide emissions of a particular person, and tell you how to offset them with green tags.
“More in general,” said Mytels, “we’re suggesting that rather than things, people give experiences. Take someone to a play or a ballet, give them concert tickets, take them on a trip to the zoo or beach. Cook them a dinner, read poetry. Do something that connects them to the world, rath-er than buying them some object that will sit in the closet. Or if you must buy an object, go to Kepler’s, mention Acterra, and they’ll donate 5 percent of your purchase to us.”
Palo Alto and its neighbors are alive with arts and entertainment, and a thoughtful holiday shopper can find experiences that will truly be treasured. Palo Alto, for instance, is home to one of the oldest community theaters in the country, the Palo Alto Players. This holiday season, shop-pers can buy a subscription to the next three shows by calling 650-329-0891 or downloading a form from www.paplayers.org.
If events and performing arts just won’t do, however, there are alterna-
tives to mass-produced mall-goods. Small local shops like the Palo Alto Art Center’s Gallery Shop or the Pa-cific Art League sell lovely pieces (paintings, blown glass, jewelry, and more) by Bay Area artists.
Still more conventional gifts are available in flavors that take less of a toll on the environment. You can do your grocery shopping and your Christmas shopping at Whole Foods Market, which features a selection of eco-friendly gifts in its Whole Body department. In addition to the usual selection of environmentally sound body products, Whole Foods has, among other things, a line of fleeces made from recycled materials, and clothing items manufactured in hu-mane working conditions from or-ganic, sustainable sources.
A holiday season that keeps the Earth happy doesn’t end at the gift: Consider the wrapping. Sunday com-ics provide a popular and colorful solution, but there’s a quirkier option — old maps. The California Geologi-cal Survey’s Map Shop, at 345 Mid-dlefield Road in Menlo Park, offers free outdated topographic maps to be used as wrapping paper.
“Instead of throwing the maps away, they get a second use,” said Senior En-gineering Geologist George Saucedo. “We have pre-rolled bundles, and loose maps. A lot have red and green Christmas colors on them. Some peo-ple run in and grab a roll, some stay quite a while, searching for the perfect map!” ■Editorial intern Dan Shilstone can be e-mailed at [email protected].

gram provides one-on-one tutoring for about 80 at-risk elementary and middle-school students. As part of the program, families are encouraged to participate in a tutoring session and are offered strategies for working with the students at home. This year SILVAR donated more than $60,000 to the Palo Alto Unified School District from its Palo Alto Realtors Campaign for Partners in Education, bringing total donations to more than $250,000 in the past five years. Next year’s goal: $75,000. ■
