Palm Sunday Of The Passion Of Our Lord

Everything You Always Wanted to Ask about Your Faith but were Afraid to Ask

Contributed by Fr. Rey Sarmiento

PALM SUNDAY Five weeks ago, we began the season of Lent with the imposition of ashes on our forehead. Now, we end the season of Lent and prepare for the Holy Triduum with palms. We do this every year that it has become too familiar to us that it is hard to be moved anymore by what we are doing. It is easy to miss that our cele-bration of Lent is bracketed by the symbol of palms. The ashes on our foreheads which reminded us of our brokenness and our need for God for forgiveness, did not come from burned wood. They were by products of burned blessed palms. Today, we use palms again to commemorate the entry of our Lord Jesus Christ to Jerusalem. But, this time we use new green leaves, fresh ones. What spiritual meaning can we draw from that? Central to our celebration of Palm Sunday is the commemoration of the Passion story of our Lord Jesus Christ, a story that reminds us also of our story as we follow the different characters of the Passion. The de-nial of Peter perhaps reminds us of the times we denied Christ in our lives just to avoid being ridiculed by friends, just to be in. The abandonment of John may remind us of those moments we opted to be lukewarm in our faith by not praying anymore or regularly going to church. The betrayal of Judas perhaps strike our conscience when we recall the times when we opted to follow the ways of the world than the path of Christ’s self-denial of Christ because we wanted to gain immediate gratification of our needs. But, more than all these, the story of the Passion reminds us really of God’s tremendous love and mercy for us. It does that by reminding us of the great meal that Jesus celebrated with his disciples. It does that too by reminding us of that moment when Jesus tells the repentant thief: “Today you will be with me in Paradise”, it does that when Jesus tells his Father to forgive those who did violence to him. Finally, it does that when Jesus, commend his spirit to His Father and gave his last breath signaling the triumphant victory of his mission to redeem us from eternal death caused by sin. We can understand, therefore, the fresh green palms that we hold in our hands as a strong reminder of the miracle of reconciliation that can be ours if we choose to. From the burnt palms that we received on our foreheads five weeks ago that reminded us that we are dust, the fresh green palms that we hold in our hands now remind us that we are first and foremost loved by God and this love calls us to come and reconcile with His Son and follow him. The Eucharist is a strong reminder of that miracle of reconciliation. May we ask for God’s grace that we come to appreciate even more what this Palm Sunday of our Lord’s Passion meant for us and respond ever more generously to God’s love by welcoming Christ into our hearts just as we welcome him now by these fresh new palms we hold in our hands.

Dear Parishioners, Scrip What is the Scrip table that you see in the

hall after mass? It holds gift cards and certificates that are available for sale to anyone. There are grocery, gaso-line, restaurant, and store cards offered. A portion of the proceeds from the sales goes back to our school to benefit student programs such as our iPad program. The admin-istration determines the best use for these funds at the beginning of the school year. You are invited to stop at the Scrip table all year to support our school. Queen of Apostles School is also offering an online scrip program called Scrip sense. This program allows you to buy a wide range of gift cards online and a portion of the proceeds goes to benefit our school. If you would like to sign up for Scrip sense please email [email protected] and provide your first and last name. The co-ordinators will register you and send you a welcome mail with directions.

We lovingly pray for those in our Parish and families who can-not join us at Mass especially Marilyn English, Loraine Rau-chle, Joel Rivera, Barbara Mertzlufft, Antonia Luna, Janet Decker, Barbara Carrillo. Please let us also pray for all our servicemen and women who serve in the Armed Forces through-out the world and remember them in our hearts today and eve-ryday. We remember those dearly departed in our Queen of Apostles family and in our own families:

Peacemakers As we get wrapped up in our busy lives, sometimes it is hard to focus on Lent. Here is a poem by Ted Loder which may help us to remember how we may be in Lent.

Catch me in my mindless scurrying, Lord, And hold me in this Lenten season: Hold my spirit to the beacon of your grace And grant me light enough to walk boldly, To feel passionately, To love aggressively, Grant me peace enough to want more, To work for more, And to sub-mit to nothing less, And to fear only you . . .Only you! Bequeath me not be calmed seas, Slack sails and premature benedic-tions, But breathe into me a torment, Storm enough to make within myself And from myself, Something . . .Something new, Something saving, Something true, And gladness of heart. A pitch for a song in the storm, A word of praise lived, A gratitude shared, A cross dared, A joy received . . . Found in All Shall Be Well from Orbis books Social Justice Committee

To the Parishioners of Queen of Apostles, Thank you all for your fabulous support of the Survival Sack Drive for the Homeless in our community. We give a big thanks to Queen of Apostles School. Each grade contributed by collecting the items needed by the homeless. The Eighth Grade then sorted the items and filled fifty backpacks, it is a Lenten project for the School and they do it well. Big thanks also to the Junior Faith Formation Group who filled ten more backpacks with the items donated by the parishioners. A very big thanks to the parishioners who purchased backpacks and filled them with the required items. That takes time and dedication. Thanks to all who donated money to help Sacred Heart in the Survival Sack pro-gram. It will be put to good use. We filled 110 backpacks and contributed $2305 to Sacred Heart. We took them down on Tuesday. They were depending on us because they were out of backpacks and they gave 31 of them out on Thurs-day. Thank you to all who made this drive a success.
