MEURANEWS 142
Brewhouse suppliers are continuously challenged to develop technologies that improve the extract yields, the productivity, the wort quality and increase the HGB.
The Meura 2001 is recognized worldwide as the lead-ing technology in the field of mash filtration.
In 2006, with a wealth of experience in mash filtra-tion (280 Meura 2001 mash filters installed all over the world), Meura decided to rethink the Meura 2001 tech-nology and modify the design of the filter chambers. The main objective was to further reduce the sparging
water ratio, and this could only be done by improving the flow pattern inside the filter chambers.
In 2007, a first prototype hybrid plate was installed in our pilot filter at Meura Technologies. The initial results were very promising and test plates were subsequently installed in an industrial filter, which confirmed and even exceeded the pilot results.
At the end of 2008, the hybrid plates were ready for industrialization and the first Meura 2001 Hybrid (for the hybrid design of the filter plates) was installed in Palm Breweries (see article on page 4).
MEURANEWS 14 3
The major improvement with the
Meura 2001 Hybrid lies in a con-
ceptual change in its filter plate
design. Previous internal research
showed an irregularity in the
sparging efficiency of the filter
bed cakes. The reason was a differ-
ent filling pattern from one cake to
another (see drawing).
A solution was found by keeping only
the filter bed in the direction of the
best sparging efficiency. The Meura
2001 Hybrid was born, which has
filter plates of one single identical
design. The plate is now called the
“hybrid plate” and no longer a “filter
plate” or a “membrane plate”. Each
hybrid plate is equipped with one
cloth AND one membrane (compared
to the Meura 2001 which had plates
equipped with two membranes OR
two cloths). See drawings.
This leads to a wide range
of advantages:
Filtration chambers are filled with
an improved regularity, thus with an
optimal homogeneity of the cake.
Shear forces during filling
are reduced
The wort quality is improved
thanks to a reduced sparging
ratio (below 2.2 l/kg while main-
taining 100% of extraction yield)
Thanks to the improved flow
pattern the filters can now be
equipped with up to 160 plates
(15.5 tons) compared to the previ-
ous filter equipped with maximum
65 chambers (12 tons).
Reduced sparging time and
thus shorter occupation time
All these advantages currently make the new MeurA 2001
HyBrid the best and most efficient mash filter in the world!
MeurA 2001 Hybrid
Note: with the Meura 2001 Hybrid, one plate has one cloth and one membrane and thus contains
one filter bed. One plate is designed for a nominal capacity of 90kg malt or malt equivalent.
MeurA 2001 – (previous version)
Note: with the Meura 2001 a filter chamber was defined as having two filter beds formed on two cloths
including two membranes. One chamber could have a load of 175kg of malt or malt equivalent.
PALM Breweries occupies
a unique position in the
brewing industry as it is
the only brewery group
in the world brewing
authentic Belgian beers
by using four traditional
fermentation methods
(bottom fermentation,
top fermentation,
mixed fermentation and
spontaneous fermentation)
in three historical sites in
Belgium: PALM Brewery,
rOdeNBACH Brewery
(see our Meuranews n° 1)
and BOON Brewery
(50/50 joint venture
with the Boon family).
The independent Belgian family brew-
ery group PALM Breweries has a total
production capacity of 1 million hl
and a headcount of roughly 250.
At the end of the 1980s, when Palm’s
exports to The Netherlands sharply
increased, a modernization of the
brewhouse was needed. At that time
the Meura 2001 mash filter was still
under development with the first
industrial prototype installed at the
Jupiler brewery in Belgium.
In 1989, when the commercialization
of the Meura 2001 was launched, Palm
Breweries became the first brewery to
invest in this pioneer technology. This
filter was equipped with 38 chambers
for a loading in malt of 7 tons.
In 2009, after three years of intensive
research, the Meura 2001 Hybrid was
developed and a partner was sought
for the first industrialization.
Palm Breweries was contacted and,
after having thoroughly studied the
new development, the group decided
once again to become the first mover
for this new Meura breakthrough.
Thanks to an improved flow pattern
during filtration and sparging, the
following advantages are obtained:
Plates are filled with an improved
regularity, thus with an optimal
homogeneity of the cake.
Reduced shear forces during filling
The wort quality is improved
thanks to a reduced sparging ratio
(below 2.2 l/kg while maintaining
100% of extraction yield)
Reduced sparging time and thus
shorter occupation time
Meura guaranteed Palm Breweries a
minimum gain in extract yield after
sparging of 1%.
In the end, an average increase of 1.51%
in the extraction yield was observed.
And for some brands using high grav-
ity the yield increase is even up to 3%!
The only minor complaint comes from
the cattle, who seem to prefer the old-
style spent grains to the new…
Meura once again thanks Palm Brewery
for having been the first mover to trust
in its new developments in the field of
mash filtration.

PAlM BrewerIes: Once again a first mover!
“ Palm Breweries had the opportunity to test the new Meura 2001 Hybrid mash filter in
premiere on industrial scale. Both cooperation with the Meura Team as the brewing
results are a fantastic experience. Compared to the previous situation our brewhouse
yield increased by 1,5% for pilsner type beers, and even more for our speciality beers.”
Alex desmet, PALM BreWerieS – Director of Production, Head brewer
A successful Indian Partnership!
in 2006, Praj industries Limited and Meura signed
a strategic partnership for the indian market.
Praj is by far the leading brewery equipment
manufacturer and turnkey supplier in india.
The partnership provides a perfect solution for Indian brew-
ers that not only need to keep pace with the increasing beer
consumption, but also must focus on extract savings, water
consumption, wort quality and energy efficiency.
After a four-year collaboration, the general assessment
is very positive for both companies. In fact, six Greenfield
projects have originated with the following companies:
Apollo Distilleries Limited, Tamilnadu (Empee Group)
United Breweries Limited, Andhra Pradesh, (UB group)
UBIO Chemicals Limited, Uttar Pradesh
In addition to the mash filters supplied previously, the total
number of Meura mash filters operational in India today
comes to 13! (eleven Meura2001 and two classical filters).
For all these projects, Meura supplied the hammer mills as
well as the Meura 2001 filters, while Praj Industries inte-
grated this technology into their brewhouses and organized
the electrical and automation works. Since the beginning of
this partnership the teamwork has been very successful and
the market forecasts continue to be very promising.
Both companies are very determined to intensify their
business relationships with the Indian brewers, since con-
tributing to the ever-renewed pleasure of high-quality beer
on the Indian sub-continent is the daily challenge, indeed
the passion of Meura and Praj.

Frankfurter Brauhaus (previously called Oderland Brauerei) is located in Frankfurt
an der Oder, Germany, on the Polish border.
The brewery is known for its excellent beers like Frankfurter export, Frankfurter Pilsner
and Weizen Bier, and is one of europe’s biggest players on the private label market.
Quality and cost efficiency are this brewery’s main requirements.
Frankfurter Brauhaus Knows the best mash filter supplier
MEURANEWS 146
In the mid-1990s the brewery decided to modernize the
brewhouse with the installation of a mash filter. Supplied
by one of Meura’s competitors, this filter was originally
equipped with a membrane technology. But the concept
failed and the supplier had to retrofit the filter to a conven-
tional mash filter. This mash filter was never able to meet
the brewer’s requirements and showed low yield, high wort
turbidity, CIP required every 15 brews, etc.
In 2009 the brewery needed to increase its brewhouse capac-
ity and, because of their bad experience with the mash filter,
a new lauter tun was the first option. But their need to be
the most cost efficient brewer finally made them decide in
favour of the only filter combining the highest quality and
the highest cost efficiency: the Meura 2001 mash filter.
The order was signed on 13 September 2009, at our booth
at the Drinktec fair in Munich.
CHALLeNGe
Less than two months after the signing of the contract, the
installation started on 2 November 2009. On 4 January 2010
(less than four months after the contract was signed), the first
brew was performed. The time period was thus very short but
nevertheless all performance guarantees were fulfilled.
The Meura technology installed in Frankfurter Brauhaus
consist of:
a Classicmill (CLM4 of 13.2 tons malt per hour)
a Mechamasher (60 tons malt grist per hour)
a sparging water tank
a double Meura 2001 mash filter, each equipped with
43 chambers extendable to 53 chambers and produc-
ing brews of 770 hl cold wort.
This double mash filter is equipped with the new ilobox
technology, which enables it to perform continuously with
an optimized parameter setting.
For the mechanical and electrical installation, Meura col-
laborated with the Polish subsidiary of Boccard Enterprises,
Meura’s parent company, called Boccard Polska.
Feed-BACk
Today the brewery is extremely satisfied with its new state-
of-the-art equipment. The performance of the Meura 2001
are incomparable to the previously installed mash filter
and even exceed by far the expectations of the brewery.
The project was thus a complete success for both Frankfurter
Brauhaus and Meura. Meura wishes great and continued
success to the brewery and thanks them for their outstand-
ing collaboration during the project.
