Palm Beach County is the largest countyin the state of Florida, US. According tofigures from the Florida Department ofTransportation, people travel nearly 35million miles a day on Palm BeachCounty roads. The county’s Traffic Divi-sion has the important mission to makesure they do that as safely and effi-ciently as possible. In line with its motto– “the best of everything” - Palm BeachCounty equipped the Division with astate-of-the-art Traffic ManagementOffice to perform that task.

Palm Beach County began modernizingits traffic systems infrastructure in thelate 1990s. Barco soon became a firmfavorite in the Traffic Management Office. When the center moved to the VISTAbusiness Center at West Palm Beach, theexisting video wall was traded in for afuture-proof system. “We had alwaysbeen very satisfied with Barco,” said GiriJeedigunta, Signal System Manager. “Butthe wall could no longer support ourever-growing and increasingly complexassignments.”

Whitlock Group embraces Barco

Jeedigunta and his team initiated a for-mal competitive bidding process, whichThe Whitlock Group won, subsequentlyselecting Barco products for the project.“The technical specifications for the wallwere very challenging and the scope ofwork was large and comprehensive,” the

Signal System Manager continued. “Morethan a video wall, we needed a totalpackage for the control room, includingdesktop computers and displays, the lad-der rail infrastructure, and furniture forthe control room as well as the confer-ence rooms.” As an experienced andwidely respected systems integrationfirm, The Whitlock Group tendered asolution that fit all the needs perfectly, including the Barco video wall the trafficcenter had been hoping for.

A huge step up

The Whitlock Group installed a large DLPrear-projection video wall, composed of12 cubes (67’’) in 2x6 set-up, the Apollodisplay management software and aBarco controller. A two-day training ses-sion imparted the requisite skills to geteveryone up and running in no time.“The new wall is definitely a step up towhat we had before,” Jeedigunta contin-ued. “The images are crisp and bright, and our operators particularly appreciatethe Apollo software. It helps them to eas-ily modify the layout of the wall, such aschanging the screen size, zooming in onparticular images, and more.”

Streaming video card – a Barco first

Maybe the most significant benefit of all, however, is Barco’s integrated streamingvideo card, which enables operators to

economically and efficiently select thetraffic camera feeds they want to view.“Without the streaming video decoder, each camera’s encoded digital signalcoming in from the field would have tohave its own decoder at the Traffic Man-agement Center. If there were 100 cam-eras, there would have to be 100decoders,” explained Craig Taylor, SeniorAccount Executive for The WhitlockGroup. “Now all of the encoded camerasignals hit a digital switch that connectsto Barco’s universal decoder, which con-verts the signals for display upon thewall. Instead of having one decoder foreach and every camera, the customergets one channel of Barco’s universaldecoding for each image it wants to dis-play simultaneously on the video wall. This is a huge cost savings.” In addition, this approach preserves the digital signalfor a longer period, which enhances theintegrity of the data while allowing oper-ators to view streams from multiple sup-pliers, as well as multiple compressiontechnologies. This holds a lot of potentialfor interagency cooperation.

Helps achieve our mission

Currently, the Traffic Division is looking forways to share the existing screen withthe Department of Transportation. TheBarco set-up allows them to do thatwithout expensive rewiring or new con-trollers. “Barco helps us solve theseissues and is always ready to help, instantly. Quite recently, they flew downespecially to help us with a techincalproblem. They worked it out and whilethey were there, did a thorough systemcheck-up,” Jeedigunta said. He continued:“The Barco solution greatly helps us fulfillour mission. As operators now get a gen-eral, real-time overview of traffic flowsand other relevant information on thegiant screen, they can better share theinfo and coordinate a quick, appropriateresponse. What’s more, we are currentlyusing only a fraction of the broad Barcofunctionality, so there’s plenty of opportu-nities to further optimize our activities, with the help of Barco, in the future.”
