Oli Brežnevi aeg, kui kempsu-paberit jagati leti alt. Valge vihik maksis kaks kopikat, kilo leiba kümne kopika kanti, aga pildiga kilekoti eest küsiti viis rubla. Banaanid tulid müüki vaid olümpianädalaks ning keegi ei teadnud, et Pepsi-Colat juuakse külmalt. Harilik arvuti täitis kaks parajat tuba.

Nende aastate Tallinnas, täpsemalt ühes Mustamäe mikro-rajoonis kasvas ja avastas elu üks tüdruk. Oma põlvkonna lapsena harjutas ta granaadiviskeid, kogus vanapaberit ning minestas raadiorivistusel. Poliitika oli igal pool. Tõnis-mäe pronksmeest valvasid püssidega plikad, valged kindad käes. Keskkooli pääses vaid läbi kommunistliku noorsooühingu.

Tol ajal teati, et Lenin käskis õppida, õppida ja õppida. Tüdruk ja ta eakaaslased õppisid elama Eestis, kus mine-vik oli erifondi luku taga ning olevik täis valet. Õnneks sai mõndagi nõmedust võtta kui nalja. Sirgudes hakkasid need noored lugema, uurima, suletud uksi avama. Tarkus ja naer lasid vaimu vabaks. Mustamäe koolist astuti ellu väärikalt, iseendaks jäänult.

See on lugu Mustamäest siis, kui see linnaosa oli võõr-võimu kiuste noor, kasvav ja rõõmus. Hea lõpuga lugu.

Ühel päeval helistas mulle naiste-rahvas nimega Betti Parklai ja kutsus välja – tal olevat tähtis ettepanek. Olime koos Bettiga töötanud kunagi 1970.– 80. aastatel Tallinna Moemajas, nüüd oli Bettil tärganud mõte oma mälestused kirja panna ja ta tahtis mind loo kaasautoriks.

Töö Eesti ainsa ja kogu Nõukogude Liidu ühe populaarsema ajakirja Siluett toimetuses, eriti aga tolleaegsed teekaaslased on mulle südamesse jää-nud, nii et võtsin pakkumise vastu.

Mood liikus toona peamiselt Moskva vahet ja tiirutas natuke ka teistes tolleaegse suure kodumaa linnades, teinekord, kui hästi läks, oma nina üle piiri lükates, millest siin ka juttu tehakse. Absurdi pakkus see aeg kuhjaga ja kus on absurd, ega sealt naligi kaugel ole.

Inimesed omas ajas, paljudel on nad veel meeles, mõnele tuttavad, mõni neist legendiks saanud, ongi selle raamatu peategelased, kuigi jah, kõik nad ei esine siin oma nime all …
