FAMILY OF THE MONTH Mario La Schiazza and Gerald Marenich, Family Activities

Congratulations to the Steven and Jan Millner Family, Arden-Carmichael Council's December 2019 Family of the Month. Steven (Steve) and Jan are long-time members of the Sacramento community. As in the case of so many other Knights and their families of the council, they too are very active in parish and council, as well as in community activities. Steve graduated from Jesuit High School,

while Jan graduated from St Francis High School. Jan then went on to receive a Master's Degree in Pastoral Ministry from St Mary's University. Steve previously served as Eucharistic Minister and as a volunteer in Youth Ministry at St Ignatius, and was a member of the Parish Council in its formation and was a member of the Parish Development Committee when St Ignatius was raising money to build the parish center. For two years, Jan and Steve were also Co-Presidents of the Parents Club at St Ignatius during the late 1980's. They recently supported the St Ignatius Parish in the Capital Campaign to build the new pastoral office and school. In recent years Jan has also been a volunteer for the RCIA program at SI. Jan recently retired .from a thirty year long career in working with teenagers: First as a Director of Youth Ministry for three different parishes, including St Ignatius Parish; Then teaching Religious Studies and Theology for ten years, initially at Christian Brothers High School, and then at St Francis HS; and for the last nine years as a Guidance Counselor at St Francis. Steve joined the Knights of Columbus on November 1, 1989, and has been serving as the Treasurer for Council 4970 since 2002, and because of his dedication and expertise in the field of finance, the council has come to rely heavily on him in financial matters. Steve and Jan also take part in as many of our council activities as possible. Steve is currently employed at US Bank as an assistant Vice President and is a member of the Rancho Cordova Chamber of Commerce, and a recent Past President of the Chamber. Council 4970 and its members are indeed fortunate, and justly proud to list the Millner Family as members of the council.

Council 4970 Christmas Party 2019 By Chuck Cuny

Applause! Applause! Applause! Three applauses makes the big celebration!. Did I say big? It was the biggest (about 55) in terms of the number of people attending since we moved to this hall. Why? One major reason is because of all members and wives worked so hard on the party.

SAINT IGNATIUS WORK CREW PLEASE CONSIDER THIS VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY IN THE

NEW YEAR Council 4970 has initiated a work crew designed to handle light-duty tasks at St. Ignatius parish on the second Saturday morning of each month. The immediate objective is to weed a narrow strip of land on the eastern border of the property, though other outdoor tasks are being developed by Fr. Chuck Tilley, SJ, who is the associate pastor. Fr. Tilley is a brother Knight and member of Council 4970. Two one-hour shifts are scheduled: 7-8 a.m. and 8-9 a.m. The calendared Saturdays are January 11, 2020; February 8, 2020; March 14, 2020; etc. Plan to show up with work tools (shovel, rake, hoe, etc.); gloves; hat; sunscreen; and drinking water. As one of Council 4970's host parishes, St. Ignatius needs our help. Please join your brother Knights in donating one hour per month in light physical labor to this worthy cause. This would be a wonderful way to potentially fulfill a New Year's resolution and enjoy the camaraderie of working with your brother Knights.

VA PROPOSES ENHANCED DENTAL CARE OR VETS NOT CURRENTLY ELIGIBLE

- Dan Aseltine, Veterans Chairman

The US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has submitted to Congress a waiver request and pilot program under Section 152 of the VA Maintaining Internal Systems and Strengthening Integrated Outside Networks Act of 2018 (MISSION Act) to improve access to dental care for Veterans. The MISSION Act authorizes VA to submit statutory waivers to Congress for the purpose of testing innovative service delivery models to improve the quality of care for America’s Veterans. Under existing statute, VA has limited authority to provide narrowly-defined dental services for eligible Veterans. With this waiver request, VA is submitting a proposal to increase access to dental services for enrolled Veterans ineligible for dental services through VA by connecting them with community-based, pro bono or discounted dental service providers. “The MISSION Act gave Veterans real choice over their healthcare decisions,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert L. Wilkie. “Through this pilot proposal, we want to ensure Veterans have access to quality dental care through a network of providers who are proud to serve America’s heroes.” Poor oral health can have a significant negative effect on overall health. Clinical research has found possible connections between gum problems and heart disease, bacterial pneumonia, and stroke. Upon approval of this pilot, VA will work with groups such as the American Dental Association and Federally Qualified Health Centers across the U.S. to offer pro bono and discounted dental services to Veterans. Section 152 of the MISSION Act led VA to establish a Center for Care and Payment Innovation to test payment and service delivery models, with the goal of reducing expenditures while preserving or enhancing the quality of care for Veterans. In implementing this section, the Secretary was granted authority to waive statutory requirements that may impede innovative approaches upon notification of and approval from Congress. The dental care proposal, titled the Care Coordination for Dental Benefits demonstration project under the Community Provider Collaborations for Veterans Pilot Program, is the first waiver request and pilot program submitted to Congress under this authority. For additional details, please see: https://www.va.gov/opa/pressrel/pressrelease.cfm?id=5377 As a member of Council 4970, if you are Veteran of active duty with the US military, please make sure that Chancellor Dan Aseltine has your contact information as well as information about your military service. JOE'S CAFE

Stop by for a tasty bit!

Socks, Guardian Angels, and Knights

Following the publication of my article on underwear in our Paladin newsletter last October, PGK Peter Kilkenny, made a good-natured remark to me, “What’s next, an article about socks?” I laughed, but began to wonder if maybe socks would be a good subject for an article since they are found in the dresser drawers of most Knights. At the same time, I was also thinking about doing an article on Guardian Angels. Like socks, every Knight has a Guardian Angel so I decided to combine all three topics. It was Brother Peter’s gentle sarcasm which has led to the title of this article and the spinning of this yarn about the interwoven relationships of socks, Guardian Angels and Knights. There are 26 bones in the human foot, 33 joints, 107 ligaments, 19 muscles and tendons. The 52 bones in our feet make up about 25 percent of all the bones in our entire body. Something had to be invented to protect our feet. Enter the idea of what we know as socks today. Sock-like coverings have been around since the Stone Ages and are probably the oldest type of clothing still in use. Wearing socks prevent chaffing and rubbing from shoes and boots while padding the heel and ball of the foot, thereby helping to cushion the foot in high impact activities. In cold environments, socks insulate the foot and decrease the risk of frostbite. Socks also help protect our shoes from our body’s perspiration. In addition to the numerous practical roles played by socks, they are also a fashion item, and are available in a myriad of colors and patterns. Some designer socks even come with Biblical scripture sewn into them. For example, “If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.” (Galatians 5:25). Thanks to the genius of our Creator cleverly guiding human hands, socks are generally designed to be worn on either foot and by divine intervention it doesn't matter which one is worn on the left and which one on the right. The garment historically worn for warmth and protection made a move from commodity to fashion piece, with growth over the past few years morphing it into a multi-billion dollar industry according to global information company, The NPD Group. Interestingly, they found that while 73 percent of men wear socks almost every day, this is the case for only 41 percent of women. They also found on average men spend more for a pair of socks than women.

In Psalm 91 (11-12) it is written that, “For he will command his angels to guard you in all ways. They will lift you up with their hands so that your foot will not hit a stone.” Socks protect and cushion our feet much like our Guardian Angels protect us from life’s mishaps and from the temptations of the Devil. God created Guardian Angels to adore Him in heaven, to act as His messengers and as guardians of human beings. They pray for us, protect us from evil, and inspire us all to do good. As faithful Knights, we are called upon to do many of these same things for the people we serve in our parishes.

This article would not be complete without a sock joke. A man asked his friend, “Why are you wearing one red sock and one black sock? The friend said, I don’t know, but I have another pair like this at home.” Now feel free to go and empty your dryer’s lint trap.

Joe Romanazzi, Past Grand Knight

Our Last Charter Member Brother Vincent La Bate Passes Away Gene Gobbo

Brother Vincent A. "Vincenzo" La Bate, passed away in Carmichael on November 8, 2019 at age 94. Brother Vince was the last survivor of a group of fifty-six Charter Members who joined together to form Arden-Carmichael Council 4970 on May 10, 1960. He is now united with the other fifty-five in eternal life. Brother Vince was involved in many council programs and was very patriotic. His patriotism is evidence of his exemplary service in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a Navy Sea Bee earning both the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He was called Sir Knight as a member of the Fourth Degree of our Order.

Vigil and Memorial services were held at Our Lady of the Assumption Church on November 20th and November 21st, 2019. Dozens of Council 4970 Knights and Lady Knights joined Brother Vince’s family and friends at the services to celebrate his life. Our Chaplain, Fr. Eduino Silveira celebrated the Mass. Members from Council 4970 presented a Resolution of Condolence to the family, along with a pair of rosary beads blessed by our Supreme Chaplain, Archbishop William Lori. The Fourth Degree provided an Honor Guard and a Chalice team adding to the solemnity of both services. A Navy Honor Guard team presented the flag of our country to the family. The services concluded with an emotional Missing Man ceremony conducted by our GK Miguel Sabral (Staff Sergeant, US Army-Retired). Requiescat in pace Brother Vince. Special Note: A Mass requested by our Council for the repose of Brother Vince’s soul will be celebrated on Sunday, February 23, 2020 at 9:30 A.M. at Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Carmichael.

There is a distant transcendent hoped-for-God Who is watching with interest but does not participate in the affairs of mankind.

GOD IS WATCHING US

By Chuck Cuny

“From a distance, there is harmony and it echoes through the land.” There are many shades of belief in God or, for that matter, lack of belief. Some years back, Bette Midler sang the beautiful song “From a Distance” with the refrain, “God is watching us”. While a very religious thought, for a devout Christian, the lyrics pose serious questions, namely, just how distant are we from God and why would He be interested in what we are doing?

The writer of the song, Julie Gold, stated that she believes that there is an immanent and benevolent God, but she also thinks, as with any art, that people have a right to interpret the song any way they

want. She has stated that the song is about the difference between how things appear to be at a distance. “The world looks blue and green, and the snow-capped mountains white…the ocean meets the stream. At a distance, “There are no guns, no bombs, and no disease.” But the, “The love of love (God) is watching us and this (reality) is the song (hope) of every man. Distance becomes more acute during time of serious disaster. Some blame God for natural disasters. Others suggest that the whole universe continues to spin through time and space, following preset laws. They believe that while God created humans and gave them some semblance of freedom, He also created the universe and set it free to pursue its (His) own order. But in time of serious disaster, we pray as though there is no distance between God and us, as though we exist in God, which we very well may. If God were distant at such a time, what need would there be for a belief in God? The entire concept of Christianity is based on Christ as God becoming man to intervene in human salvation. If God were not concerned about the course of human history and the role of man, then there is no reason for a Church, for Mass or other liturgy, for prayer or for any expression of faith, hope, or charity. Pain and suffering are very difficult to explain if we believe that God really is a loving and caring God. The song suggests that God does care but at a distance such that He does not involve Himself in human affairs. The mystery of how God participates in human history is not readily answered, but God certainly does. Does anyone believe that the God, who created all the physical laws that move the universe with mechanical precision and time, cannot intervene in their operation? The song reflects Old Testament theology. It does not reflect the New Testament Gospels about a God who knows and cares even for the needs of the tiny sparrow or the God/man Christ who brings love, faith and salvation to man. The distance between God and man is nothing less than a measure of man’s faith in God. Or better, the distance between God and man is nothing less than a measure of man’s faith in Christ! Epilogue – The Jewish Julie Gold would have us believe that yes there is a God, but a transcendence and distant-hoped-for-God Who is watching with interest but does not participate in the affairs of the world. Christianity stands or falls by the proclamation of the closeness of God to His creation, not a distant uncaring God, but one who is intimately involved in His people.

NEW YEAR FRIVOLITY

My New Year's resolution is to help all my friends gain ten pounds so I look skinnier. My wife still hasn't told me what my New Year's resolutions are. I love when they drop the ball in Times Square. It's a nice reminder of what I did all year. Can't wait to start my New Years resolution of 2018! My New Year's resolution is to be more optimistic by keeping my cup half-full with either rum, vodka, or whiskey.
