PA LA DIN PRESS ? FEB/M A R 2017

M AAP STAR S is a student leadership organization for alternative schools throughout the state of M innesota. We focus on Success, Teamwork, Achievement, Recognition, and Self-Esteem.

We began meeting in January after we attended our fall conference where one of our own Paladin Officers was voted to be a State Officer. The new year has been very busy with our membership growing to 17 members. We meet for two hours every week, but we correspond through email and group projects throughout the week. The team is able to focus on their academics along with building their leadership skills.  As a member of the team, students are responsible for logging their time on Project Foundry to earn credit and also for helping to lead/plan meetings.

We have planned two Paladin community building activities. We have done a Winter Wonderland Hot Cider stand and we are currently working on our School Unity Project that brings everyone together equally.

We have been working on fundraising. We are doing a Valentine's Day Flower sale and are getting ready to do a fundraiser at Pizza Ranch in Champlin. This money will help us to pay for the cost of our team to travel to the state competition and also for us to plan events for our fellow student body.

One of our team goals is be the best we can be at our State Spring Conference in April. We will compete with other alternative schools from all over the state in group and individual events. The competitions range from speech writing to group problem solving, to demonstrations.

For more information: See Heidi/John C.

Postsecondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) is a program that allows 10th-, 11th- and 12th-grade students to earn both high school and college credit while still in high school, Requirements are set by each college, but generally 11th graders need to be in the top 1/3 of their class and 12th graders in the top 1/2 of their class. 10th graders who passed the 8th grade M CA Reading test may be eligible to take one Career & Technical Education course initially and if that class is passed with a C or better, the college may allow more classes the following semester. Some colleges have other eligibility allowances

besides class rank which may permit students who are not in the top 1/3 or 1/2 to still be eligible for PSEO.

Information about each college's requirements can be found on the college's webpage. Students need to meet course requirements, which are determined by Accuplacer or ACT scores. Students must maintain a 2.0 GPA at the college in order to remain in PSEO. Some courses (such as CN A, construction, EM S etc.) have an age minimum due to state regulations. If you are interested - See Sarah Sannes. Colleges are enrolling students now for fall 2017.

In the months of February and M arch, Paladin students will be examining the meaning and value of such virtues as Fortitude, Loyalty, Idealism, and Integrity. By focusing on these character traits, Paladin students will continue to cultivate a positive, supportive school climate where academic success can flourish. It is through a culture of mindful excellence that we hope to equip and empower these leaders of tomorrow.

As an additional incentive to encourage students to do their best, there will be an end-of-year field tr ip to Valleyfair that is exclusive to those students who have earned Court of Honor membership during three or more months of this school year. All students should work toward this goal!

The following students should be particularly proud of themselves, as they have earned Court of Honor membership and open lunch access for the month of February:
