The Royal Background of the Palace on Wheels On rolling back wheels of time, we find the rulers of princely states of Rajputana, Gujarat, the Nizam of Hyderabad and the Viceroy of British India travelled bythese luxurious coaches. After independence, these
coaches were parked and remained in this state for a
quarter of a century until in 1981-82, when theRajasthan Tourism Development Corporation and
Indian Railways launched a special heritage touristtrain for providing a unique memorable experience to
the tourists visiting Rajasthan.
The name Palace on Wheels was
derived from it's royal background of the coaches. Gradually State govt.and railway department broughtmany infrastructural changes in thecoaches while keeping the same aesthetics of the
interiors alive, matching the interiors of the royal state.The train was replaced by the air-conditioned broadgauges new train, which had 14 saloons, 2 restaurant
cum kitchen cars, one Bar cum Lounge and 4 serviceCars. The cabins of each saloon are attached with
bath and shower. The train also has a well-appointed
lounge, library and bar.

Royal Services on Board
Apart from 14 saloons, each having 4 cabins attachedwith bath and shower, the Palace on Wheels has two
restaurants cum kitchen cars offering traditionalIndian, Continental and Chinese cuisine with theChef's special variety of the day. Its well stocked bar
serves Indian liquor and variety of scotch, wine andcocktails. It has piped music in every saloon, andinteresting games for children.
Apart from this, the other services
on request include laundry services,
and Doctor on call at each station,
barber shop & beauty parlour. Thelounge also has a souvenirs shop'The Bazaar' where souvenirs and gift items are soldbearing the insignia of the POW.
The names of the saloons given are based on theprincely states of Rajasthan- Jaipur, Jodhpur, Alwar,Bundi, Kota, Jhalawar, Dungarpur, Dholpur,
The Lavish InteriorsSit in these beautiful carriages and look around. You
will find that each saloon highlights the cultural ethosof the state, represented through the use of furniture,
handicrafts, painting and furnishings. The ceiling in thelounge is of particular interest. Each saloon is differentbut the overall ambience of the décor of the saloonshas been taken care of to provide continuity andharmony.
Each saloon has cream yellow colour on its exterior walls and bears the Coat of Arms (logo) of the
erstwhile princely states.

Located strategically, Alwar is the gateway to
Rajasthan from Delhi. With a turbulent historyspanning back to the medieval era, Alwar has beenan important place of trade and commerce.Bestowed by nature with a unique habitatcomprising forests and deep valleys, Alwar in hometo several species of flora and fauna. The ceiling ofthe Alwar coach lounge has been done aesthetically
in a delightful mix of cone work and oils in relief,depicting a hunting scene. The royal emblem and aminiature painting adorn the lounge. Subtle tones ofpink enhance the romantic ambience of the lounge.
Maharaja Suraj Mal, the valiant Jat king, who wasadmired for his chivalry and courage, had his abodehere. Once a fortified township, Bharatpur is now anornithologist's paradise and well known for theKeoladeo Ghana bird sanctuary. The sanctuary ishome to over 376 avian species. Echoing the vividityof nature's gift to Bharatpur the relief work on thiscoach depicts various species of birds on the tree oflife. A replica of royal crest of Bharatpur adorns thevalance of the blinds. The 'nature' theme is furtherendorsed by the white cedar inlay work depictingbirds and painted peacocks, sitting on a haveliworked on a mirror. The color scheme, with itsprofusion of beige and aqua green, is a vividreminder of lush green forests of Bharatpur andGhana
3. BIKANER
Bikaner came into being in 1486 A.D. when Rao Bikaset out to carve a separate kingdom for himself. Thecolour scheme of the lounge has been motivated by
the opulent coronation rooms in burning red andgold of the Anup Mahal and Padam Mahal of theJunagarh fort. The royal state crest is placed on thevalance along with some handicrafts of Rajasthan.The ceiling is done up in relief work and an oil
painting on canvas, depicting the legendary loversDhola & Maru on camelback. The artwork in thelounge is in the Mughal ²influenced style of Bikaner
School of Art.
Restaurant :
The train has two lavish restaurants "The Maharaja" and"The Maharani" with a Rajasthaniambience serving palate tickling Continental,Chinese, India and Rajasthani cuisines.
The restaurants offer seating arranged in groups oftwos and fours near the windows. Chefs in the
attached pantry prepare Continental and Indianspecialties, with an emphasis on the cuisine ofRajasthan.
The Bar: The Palace on Wheels boasts of a wellstocked bar offering the choicest of sprits of Indianand international brands.

Day 05, Sun :- Sawai Madhopur
Moving on from the desert kingdomof Jodhpur, on the fifth day of the
